What do you keep the thermostat at during the summer?

78 when DH is home. On the days that he works, I will turn it up to 80, if not turn it off and open the windows. I stay cold when it's at 78, and the kids don't seem to care.

We moved to SW Fl. in 1986. DW loves the heat and I hated the heat. After all these years my blood has thinned enough where the thermostat is set at 86 during the day and 79 at night.

After working outside in 90+ temperatures in the shade during the day, 86 feels cool and 79 at night is almost freezing.

I agree with the poster who said they would be hot in most of your houses.

Thermostat is off in the summer, no AC. Sometimes I can go many nights without sleep because it is so hot. The AC in the living room window doesn't do anything for the bedrooms. We have sliding windows, so can't put a normal cheap unit in. We spent $500 for a unit for casement windows. I don't think it would even fit in the bedroom windows anyways.

Usually 65 in the winter.

Only one time did we crank up the heat in the winter. The thermostat is right next to the closet and it was an old slide unit when we moved in. We ran to the store and it was way above 90 in the house when we got back home with the furnace still cranking away. Someone must have brushed the temperature slide when putting on their coat. We immediately bought a new digital thermostat shortly afterwards.

Wow- I would be pretty warm in many of your houses- I don't have central air but have one giant unit in the living room that I keep set on 62 that does most of the first floor and the one in my bedroom I keep set at 60 so when I sleep it is nice and cold in there with the door shut.
We have central air and we keep it 68-70. We have knocked it down to 65 though. We didn't have central air growing up and I miss the freezing cold of the individual units. There is nothing like sniggling under a comforter with just your face out in a freezing room.:cloud9:

Ours is at 78 during the day and then lowered to 75 about an hour before we get home.

On weekends, it's at a steady 76.

During the day when I am home 80
During the day on the weekend 79
During the night 83

We keep the temps on the high side to save money, not the earth.

73 - 75 during the day
72 at night and I close all the downstairs registers

We're not comfortable at anything higher than 75.

Our thermostat does heat and a/c, too...but from March 1 or so...I rarely turn it on. My house stays at 71 w/o it in the summer. I will only turn the a/c on if the house gets above 80 or so. And then I set it at 77.

I would rather have the windows open when I am inside. Even on the hot stick nights, I would rather have my window open and the box fan blowing on me!

we live in alabama, and the heat index is already well over 100 degrees F during the day. we keep our thermostat on 77 day and night, and run our ceiling fans on high.

We have our A/C set on 80 in summer; and our heat set at 65 in the winter.

About 80....and even with it that high, our electric bill will be about $400. I'd like it to be a little cooler, but I just can't stomach paying any more money than that!

I set my thermostat at 72 at night, and around 75 during the day when I'm not around. Any hotter, and you have to worry about mold growth. Cheaper to run up the bill than having to gut a good portion of your house.

Edit: Mine is programmable, but I really don't bother with it unless I'm away.

I didn't realize I keep my house so un-naturally cool. Then again, I have 2 kids with Asthma so I need to keep it cool to prevent mold and other allergens, I can't open the windows.

Before you go thinking we are crazy decadent we have a vaulted ceiling in the mater bedroom & bath that positively BOILS during the day which heats the upstairs up to unbelievable temps that just won't drop (not good for Asthma) if we don't keep the whole house cool all day. Upstairs runs about 10 degrees hotter than downstairs, you can feel the heat hit you when you walk up the stairs.

Our thermostat allows 4 changes during the day.

My temps read:

6:30am 69

9:00am 70

2:30pm 67

4:45pm 64

If I am REALLY lucky upstairs will be about 70 at bedtime but downstairs almost never actually hits the target temperatures. Wish we could sleep with the windows open to reduce costs but that's not even in the realm of possible, I guess it's just a part of dealing with health issues. The only time I can open the windows is for a few hours in the early morning every few days when pollen counts are relatively low. In order to keep the bills low I often shut the whole system down from about 7am-2pm or until the house reaches 71, that is if the humidity isn't too bad or the air isn't too freezing in the winter because then I just can't do it at all. PS, the stories about it being cheaper to keep the whole thing on all day instead of turning it on & off are malarkey, I cut my bills by 25-30% doing the totally off in the am on in the pm thing. Our gas runs about $180/month on the year long averaged 'Budget' amount.
