What do you feed your dog?

Yes, I'm an obsessed new dog owner. Forgive me.

Harley is on Hill's Prescription Science Diet right now, because of his health issues and weight problems... it's expensive, and only available through our vet, but he LOVES LOVES LOVES it.

Once we're done with this round that the vet wants him to have, I'd like to switch him over to something more affordable... We have Nutro Puppy Dry Chow from when we first got him, but I know he loves the canned stuff...

So, what do you feed your dog? What canned food is the best, in your opinion? Did you feed your growing puppy canned food, or only dry? What would you do?

THANKS!

we feed our Golden dry food from a local maufacturer called Zamzows.

sorry that probably doesnt help you :)

my vet is very against canned food because it supposedly causes dental problems. I occasionally give them canned pedigree as a treat, but mine eat maily nutro max

I feed my dog Flint River. It's what the breeder recommended for labradors and it's been perfect for her. :D Even better, they deliver it to my house, so I never run out or have to shop for it.

I don't know if your puppy is a large breed dog, but if he is you should discuss with your breeder about when to start feeding him adult food. We started our Bernese Mountain Dog on adult food at about (I think?) 4 months. On puppy food, they grow too fast! Same with our Newfoundland.

Now, three of our dogs are FAT. So they get Iams Weight Control for Large Breed, and our Newf-the only normal weight-gets Iams regular for Large Breed. We don't feed them canned dog food, never have. Just their kibble and lots of water to prevent bloat.

We get a 48 lb bag of Iams at Sam's or BJ's wholesale for $28. They don't need to eat a lot of it, and there is less "output" than the other "non premium" brands.

Good luck with your new baby!

Iams Mini Chunks for the Adult dog.

Because he's worth it. ;)

Pro Plan adult (chicken & rice flavor) for our 8 yo Bullmastiff.

And yes....since she was a large breed....my breeder advised not to keep her on puppy food for long...

No canned food for her either.

He's a Shih Tzu, currently at 2 pounds, vet doesn't think he'll get beyond 5 pounds fully grown... he's TINY.

I have heard that purely canned isn't good for their teeth, too, so maybe we should do a canned for awhile longer than switch him over to the dry Nutro? That's what the breeder uses for her pups, and what he ate before we got him. But of course, he was severely underweight when we got him, but I think that's more about her not making sure he was getting food from the bowl than the actual food.

Thanks for your thoughts, keep them coming! Those food aisles at the Pet Store give me a headache, I haven't a clue what's best!

:rotfl: :rotfl:

It would take him 10 years to go through the 48 lb. bag I was describing!! But just remember, when switching his food, do it gradually..Start off with a mixture of more of the old, less of the new, gradually working up over a few days to all new. Less likely to upset his little tummy..

Lisa L from MI, a bullmastiff?!! Now THAT is a BIG DOG!!!

p.s. I'm originally from MI, too! small world...

My Golden gets California Natural Rice and Lamb because he's gotten a little heavy. Otherwise he gets the Lamb and Rice. No chicken or corn for him due to sensitivities.

Purina One - lamb & rice

He's fussy. That is the only dry food he likes and he is too little for canned food.

I feed my golden, Canidae. It has given her the most beautiful coat, and has helped eliminate ear problems. This is a natural dog food and is a bit pricey but well worth it!!

IAMS Weight Control or Purina One Lamb & Rice for a treat.

We feed our baby girl Nutro Natural Choice Puppy food. We tried 2 other foods (Royal Canin and Solid Gold) but both upset her tummy. She loves the Nutro and it's easy to get at Petsmart.

We feed the Keeshond puppy (Elvira) Iams puppy food.

My Chow Chows and Akitas get Iams mini chunks

I feed my golden this too.

We have a part golden retriever and part whoever. Cayti's mother was a pure golden and got out and had 12 puppies. Catyti looks mostly retreiver. She is an unusual dog in that she doesn't like anything crunchy. We have never had a dog like this before. Currently she is eating Homestyle mix by (I forgot). We have tried all brands in the four years since she was born and if it crunches she won't eat it. The vet even checked her teeth, gums, etc. and they were fine. She does have a can of Alpo for breakfast and then the dry for supper. Wish she would eat better though.

We feed our dog Innova Adult dog food. It keeps her healthy and looking great. It is pricey and not found in many stores in our area which is a pain.

My husband goes to the pet store and buys Science Diet for both our dog and cat.
