What do you do when you FIRST get to your hotel?

Ok, now I am icked right out. Please tell me how to do a bed bug check. Are there lots of cases of these in the hotels by Disney? Ick Ick Ick!!

pull off all the blankets and then untuck the sheet and look for little blood splatters on the corners and such..apparently there are bed bugs everywhere these days, would think dlh would be pretty good tho...I have read up about cockroaches tho and that would gross me out!

ah ha! I felt wierd about the bed bug thing but you do it too!!:thumbsup2

:lmao: Oh yeah I do. I watched a show on it once, and that was it, I always check. People I know give me grief about it, even my husband rolls his eyes at me, but no way am I gonna wake up with bites and then take those little buggers home with me. I start to itch just thinking about it!! :scared1:

Yup and if you can look behind the headboard too, they like to hide there. Do a search on the internet if your really interested. Not only do they go in to great detail of what to look for, they also show pictures of what to look for. Warning though, you'll probably itch for a while after looking at that stuff! LOL

The reason why were having a problem now is because the pesticide we used to use to kill them has been made against the law. Bed bugs were completely wiped out in this country, but not in others. So travelers from other countries have been bringing them here again, and none of our current pesticides work as well. It can happen in any hotel, being expensive, nice, and clean looking doesn't mean they don't have bed bugs. Since it only takes a few minutes to check out the room, I think it's really worth it. Not only could you all wake up being bit up very badly, you'll more then likely bring them home with you, and it's VERY hard to get rid of them in your home. Very expensive also. Talking about getting rid of bedding, the beds, carpet, even furniture. I even saw a story on TV of someone who had to knock a wall down because the bugs were hiding in the cracks of the wall, so spraying and getting rid of all there stuff didn't even work.

Not saying it's something to panic over and never travel again. I mean I've travelled a lot since I became aware of the issues, and have NEVER found a problem in any place that I've stayed. It's just nice to be aware of though, and take a few minutes to check things out. No harm in that I don't think.

Since our second day is about 10-11 hour drive, we get unpacked, and walk over to DTD and work out the kinks. Since it is only $10.00 difference in the PH tickets, we head into CA, walk around knock off a few rides and then over to Brennans or Rainforest for dinner. Walk back to the room to work the food off, watch some TV and then to bed.
Up at 0500 the next day and ready to go.

I was wondering if I should switch to a 6 day PH so we can take advantage of the Satuday when we arrive-get to SNA mid-morning. I'd planned to not bother, since it's a Saturday in July and I figured it would be too insane if we couldn't get there first thing, but do you guys think it's worth it? We'll be there til the following Saturday, w/5 day PHs, so I'd figured that Sunday would be our only weekend day (trying to minimize crowds).

I'm giggling a little bit about the bedbugs :). I never, ever, ever watch shows like that-it just freaks us out, and I don't think there's anything to really worry about. After all, that black light or whatever they use would freak you out if it was used in your own houses.

And I've yet to hear of anyone getting gonorrhea from a motel bed spread :)

I love to check out the hotel info when I first get there-read about the pool, or room service, or whatever. I figure we'll head to DTD right away, if we don't go to the parks, then come back for a swim. If we do Medieval Times, that might be a good night.

Do you need to rent a car to get to Target?

I am now getting creeped out about bed bugs. If you DO find them....what do you DO? If they show you to another room it may not be to your liking or it may have the little critters, so aren't you trapped no matter what? :scared1:

Limace, you're not alone. We dont get too worked up for bugs and germs either. I've never once sanitized a hotel or motel room, and I dont look for bugs. We dont use hand santizer in the parks. Some day I might regret that, but I'll live on the wild side until then.

As for adding a day, you can decide at any point in your trip to add a day- up until the end of the last day you use your tickets. We are considering going to the park, just for about 3 hours, one evening during our trip. We dont have hoppers for that day. But, if we decide to do it I know its only $10 each to add 6th day on to our 5 day hoppers. The Disney travel office is open daily until 5 and can do it for me since I booked thru them.

ah this brings back memories for me:cloud9: when my daughter was little we always stayed at DLH and its about a 5 hour drive to anaheim for me...we never strayed from our routine on the day we got in to anaheim...we always left home around 6am and stopped in Bakersfield for gas and breakfast at Ihop(back then we didnt have an ihop here and the food was alot tastier than it is now)..then we got into anaheim around lunch time...checked in to hotel and went over to monorail cafe for lunch and walked around the grounds by the waterfalls, went on the paddle boats(to which I had a horrid experience once..almost lost shoe in water, was unintentionally doing the splits in the boat while 2 cms had to help pull me out:rolleyes1 my dd still gives me grief about it to this very day:mad:)by then we could get in our room and go swimming for awhile, come back get ready for dinner at GK...man those were the days....now I leave whenever I get up and get going but I still try and do GK on the first night...I am not really into DD..I have a few must go to places but for the most part its not a big deal to me...it might be due to the fact that in the AM im not trying to stroll through the daisys..im on a mission to get into the park:lmao: and its really cold at night when I come back so Im just trying to get back to the hotel :rotfl: but thanks for the reminder of all the great times we had when my dd was growing up:love:

To each their own for checking out the room for bugs. Kinda like the removal of the comforter, a lot of people find that funny to do too. I'm really not a big germ freak myself (we don't even remove the comforter, never caught anything from it in the past, but I can understand why some people remove it). To me there is a big difference between germs and bugs though, and I'd rather be safe then very sorry!

Just the fact of why you might even think of gonorrhea from a bedspread is reason enough to rip those icky things off! I mean... think about it... ICK! it's not like it's your bedspread at home you know. We are talking multi-strangers with potential gonorrhea type activities going on! I dont want my kids laying on that!
But hey. To each his own.

Darph, loved your post....sounds just like my DH;)
I agree with the poster who said they read through the literature in the room. I have to unpack, get out the extra pillows and prop them up against the headboard, sit back and read the info on the hotel. You know, the emergency info, all the available things to do, restaurants, info about the close by attractions, but most importantly, the room service menu. Funny thing is we don't order room service more than once per 3-4 night stay, but I have to read that thing from cover to cover. Am I weird or what?:confused3 Then I love to peruse the entire hotel, check out every nook and cranny and then I will start to enjoy the parks, DTD, or whatever is first on the agenda. :)

P.S. And I never remove the comforter or check for bugs, but you guys have really raised my awareness, I have seen those specials on 60 Minutes or whatnot and I agree it is worth two minutes of my time to simply check the mattress for evidence of beg bugs. I vow to change my ways. Honest! Great thread:dance3:

I'm totally grossed out by the comforter thing. I've never even thought of that.

What do you all do for blankets?

eewwww, after reading about all the bed bugs it grosses me out too...I will be thinking on taking off our comforters also! :scared1:

Last time we walked around the DLH grounds where we were staying, and then we checked out part of DTD. The next time we go, we will be staying at BWPPI, so I'm not sure what we will do. Probably after getting settled at the hotel, we'll head to DTD and get a bite to eat. We will be driving from Portland, so we may just want to relax for most of the afternoon.

LOL The only reason I said gonorrhea is that Garrison Keillor once did a funny bit about this on Praire Home Companion-about how he'd never heard of anyone getting gonorrhea from a public bathroom doorknob, but wouldn't you hate to be the first guy? There'd be a newspaper headline "Area Man First Victim of Doorknob Gonorrhea: Shown here with former wife and children".

My mom was a public health nurse, and oddly enough that made her way less paranoid than lots of othe folks about germs. For instance, she hates those antibiotic hand washes, says they decrease our immunity. But your right-to each his own.

Sceam in delight! Sounds good to me :)

We did a bunch of different things.

1st time: We went to get groceries, swam etc.
2nd time: Same, but this time we made sure to find a place to watch the Flames game.
3rd time: We had no luggage so we were kind of screwed for the first bit. We went to Target. Then we went to Jack-In-The-Box, because we had nothing to eat but cookies. Then we went to DTD, and went to ESPNZone and I bowled with my sister, and played some games. We swam and that was it.

I'd like to start my Disney vacation first thing in the morning, so what do you do with the hours of your day that are unfilled on your arrival day?

I'd think DTD...but I wonder if I could be that close to the park and NOT go in? Or swimming if it's warm enough....Just wondering what other families do.

On this trip we are going to relax by the pool then head to downtown disney.
