What do you call a hospital bed room?

My mom was recently in a new building of a general hospital. She asked if she would be moved to the ward. The young nurse told her, "It's not called a ward. It's called a Dorm."

Is this news to anyone besides me?

I just call it floor. I spent the majority of my time on the oncology "floor", but a few times I would stay in the ICU. I've also spent time on the orthopedic "floor".

None of my nurses, doctors, residents, whathaveyou ever said anything.

Wards are, to me, the old fashined big huge room where there are like 20 beds all lined up.

We have private and 2 bed rooms on our unit.

I call them ridiculously expensive, but then again what other hotel will send someone in to empty your bedpan?

I'd never heard it called a 'ward' unless it was a mental hospital... Maybe I dont know what I'm talking about....lol

I work in a hospital and we refer to them as floors. I don't understand the need to correct your mother though, she should be free to call it whatever she wants

Back in the day if you were not in a private room or 2 bed unit it was called a ward. When I was 5 and had my tonsils out(you know, when they came out whether you needed them out or not) I was in a ward. Many Many other kids were in there with me. Susan
