My favorite mom story on this topic has to do with when we sent DS to Atlanta for a 4-H conference when he was maybe 14. He said that he was delayed by security in Atlanta on his way home and, when I asked why, he said it was because of the HUGE burrito he bought off a food truck guy that he bought to eat on the plane! Something about it being wrapped in so much tinfoil and giving off a heat signal...

That stomach of his is going to get him in trouble one of these days!

When I was flying home, I wanted to stop by this restaurant to pick up queso and chips, but I was afraid the queso would not make it through the security. Has anyone been succesful with queso going through security?

Ok, so the crockpot idea has given me pause.

How often have you done this? Do you have an "old crockpot" shelf? Do you buy old crockpots all the time? Why is buying old crockpots and leaving them around airports better than bringing, say, a sandwich?

What do you cook in it? Do you transport warm/hot food in it? How do you get the food through security? You can't bring liquids through, so are you buying "cream of___" soups after the security checkpoint? Where do you buy cans of condensed soup at the airport? What airport allows this?

Do you wash up after? No leftovers? Or do you take your barbecue shredded pork on the plane? Do you leave a note, saying, "free crockpot!"?

Do you know if security has ever had to explode one because a crockpot could be considered suspicious, sitting unattended? Do you worry about security finding an unattended crockpot and tracing it to you and getting in trouble?

And you forgot another one: How about the plates, bowls, folks, spoons, etc.? How many do you carry with you and do you also leave them with a note saying FREE?

Wouldn't it just be cheaper to eat on the way to the airport, or purchase a sandwich at the airport, or eat after you get to you final destination??????

I've brought snacks through security such as prepackaged cheese, crackers, dried fruit, etc.

I also save my empty water bottle from the day before my flight and carry that through security and then fill it up at a water fountain.

Anything that can't hold it's shape outside of the package is a liquid, so no you can't bring it unless the package is less than 3.4 oz and it fits in your 3-1-1 bag.

We bring an old crockpot to the airport. There are lots of plugs to heat it up and we leave the crockpot for someone else to take home and reuse.

for real....we usually do a lot of snack type foods while flying...one of the few times I splurge and buy travel sized food items to carry...bring an epmty water bottle, cheese,crackers,nuts,granola bars,some fruit...it works for us!
plus my kids always like something in the airport

Money! That's what I bring. I'm on vacation. I'm not going to pack a bunch of food to eat at the airport. I do bring pringles for long flights though.

I just stick my hot dogs in my armpit. Warms 'em up nicely.

Ugh. What is wrong with people? Why on earth would a family of 4 fly on buddy passes during peak vacation season without enough money to get them home if something like this happened?

Ok really stupid question... If they were in SLC visiting family why the heck didn't they stay with family at night after the last flight left? I can't imagine Jet Blue has more than a dozen flights to SLC... Just checked and looks like they have 4 flights per day.

I wonder if they would have gotten home faster if they split up into 2 groups of 2 instead of all 4 at once?

This article says they turned down food and hotel vouchers. The only one I feel sorry for is the 4 year old who didn't ask to be born to irresponsible morons.

I have no idea why they wouldn't stay with family if they had some in the area. I'm guessing that they thought they would shame the airline by staying put. Whoever gave them those buddy passes is probably going to be in hot water, though.

When you fly on buddy passes, you are at the absolute bottom of the standby list. Getting 4 open seats on the same flight out of a major airport during peak vacation season takes a while. I don't know why they didn't split up.
