What do they do with the poo!

Ok..this is a strange question. I know they have filters that convert sea water into fresh.....but what happens to the dirty water. I read before that they filter that water and use it to water plants....well there are only a few plants onboard! So what do they do with the rest? Do they release it into the ocean or do they suck it out once they dock back in port canaveral?

Okay, here is what I found out on the web. Wastewater which contains human waste, typically referred to as blackwater, can not be dumped by ships within three miles of land. If the ship plans to discharge within the three mile limit, they must treat the waste to some established level. Outside of the three mile mark, it is do as you please, currently. There appears to be a great deal of attempts at legislating that the ships must either treat or dump at the dock, but nothing firm yet.

As for normal garbage, most vessels will incinderate or grind, and then release the ashes and/or ground up remains at sea as well. Once again, this is outside the three mile limit.

As for what DCL does specifically, I was not able to find an answer to that question.

they collect the solid waste in 50 gallon drums and then distribute it around the palm trees on castaway cay and in the growing rooms that you see on Living with the Land to help them grow. didnt you ever hear them tell you on that ride that they dont use dirt?

Food waste is ground up very fine and fed to the fish. They told us that on the Galley Tour.

If you want some really detailed info on this subject, I would suggest www.oceanconservancy.org. On their main page they have a link to a publication called "cruise control" that explains everything. As an environmentalist myself, it was a really hard decision for me and my DH to go on a cruise, but we had the peace of mind of knowing that DCL has never violated existing pollution and dumping laws while most other cruise lines have. We are huge Disney fans at least partially because of their "environmentality" as they call it. They definitely go out of their way to be conservation-minded!

They don't filter seawater, there are a series of evaporators that seperate that separates the fresh water from the sea water. Simple process, but there is a big difference in the technologies.
