What do they do about theft in a room?

We recently stayed at AKV and realised (thanks to me DIS friends) that we had several items missing from the room, including the IHome alarm clocks. We went down to the front desk right away so they did not think we stole them, but I wondered what they did about it. Do they charge anyone for this or just let it go? We pay for those items with our dues so I would hate to think that we are paying for people to steal items from the rooms.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Since Mousekeeping did not report it before you checked in, it would be hard to prove the previous guest took it. You know you did not take it but in a court they could easily say it was there when they left and blame you. Your word against theirs.

WHAT???!!! You mean those fancy alarm clocks AREN'T souvenirs?

If they can't prove who did it and charge them for it, I'm sure it would come out of some breakage budget, and that would all roll up into our dues somewhere.

Unfortunately, these things happen. No way would DVC blame the person that brought it to their attention. Hypothetically, possible.

The dues will in fact pay for the loss. That is how it works. Property loss is a significant part of the dues... especially towels.

People STEAL towels? Seriously?

The idea of people stealing from the rooms really frosts me.

Have you seen my ebay listings for iHome radios and Disney towel sets?

One trip, I did a split stay at OKW and AKV, Little did I realize that when I checked out of OKW, I took the USB cord (still hooked up to my computer). When I got to AKV and pulled out my computer, I felt so bad! I immediately called the front desk at OKW and apologized. I knew in the room, it had said there'd be a fee if you took the USB cord, and I told her I wanted to be sure to return it before my account was charged. Was I surprised when she said "Oh, don't worry-it says there'd be a charge but we really never charge for it being missing." BTW, I still brought it to the front desk of AKV to return to OKW.

that wasn't nailed down. My bad. I usually bring a couple extra suitcases for all of those towels and kitchen appliances. The towels and wash clothes are a great way to wrap up the glass items, especially the blender.

In an another post the OP reported that of the lights in the room some of the bulbs were burned out and some were just missing. Seriously, who steals light bulbs... Geez, their a quarter a piece at walmart... We as the owners must get into the habit of going though the room first thing and reporting any issues. We pay a huge amount of money in dues and the rooms need to be kept up. If they aren't then we are not getting value for what we pay in dues. Plus who knows if housekeeping themselves are not taking the items. Seriously, who takes light bulbs when on vacation... :confused3

I checked into SSR one trip and the DVD player in the livingroom was missing as was the clock in the bedroom. This was before the iHome. I immediately called the front desk and within 30 minutes both items were replaced.

I posted about the lightbulbs? In my AKV room we were missing kitchen towels, clock radios and the animal sheet that tells you what animals are on your safari. I don't remember posting about light bulbs. Maybe I did though?:confused3

We did get everything right away, with the exception of the animal sheet. It never came and we called several times about it. After a few days, I just gave up asking for one.

When we stayed at BLT in March, we had a problem with our Ihome. A maintenance CM came to the room with a new one. And somehow the conversation came around that many of the Ihomes were being stolen. I asked if the guest that vacated the room was charged for the stolen Ihome. His reply, no because all the guest would have to do was say, it was there when I left, so someone must have walked in while it was being cleaned. And then the guest could refuse the charge on their credit card. So instead of asking the guest the WDW resort just replaces the missing items. I keep wondering how much theft replacements costs us in our Annual Dues.

Personally I don't get it, :confused3 why would you steal from a hotel? Don't people have any morals anymore?

Then they need to bolt them down. Those things are not cheap, and clearly it is a problem. To just allow them to be stolen is costing us all money.

When the previous poster said "In an another post the OP", I took it to mean "in another post, the OP of that post said"...not that YOU said it. :)

Got it!:thumbsup2 I was wondering how I could forget about missing bulbs but lately I would not put it past me.;)

Interestingly enough, they've glued to the counter/surface/ every decoration in an OKW villa, you would think they would bolt down the I-Pod Clocks.

I will likely get taken to task for saying this, and no, I don't have proof, BUT...
I am willing to bet that most of the thievery is not coming from Members. I'm going with exchangers and renters. Not 100%, but a high percentage.

My recent stay at SSR the USB cord was missing.I called the front desk(or wherever it goes to)and they said they would send another one. They did later that day but I did wondered if the previous renter would be charged.I'm disappointed to see these things just get replaced and noone is held accountable. If I were to accidently take it home w/my computer I would fully expect to be charged for it:confused3 And the Ihomes???? This bothers me.They should secure these kind of items to deter theft, especially if they are not charging people for them!!Or,as far as the USB goes,if they got wifi then no need for cables!!!

i'm sure other "more mature" <ahem> people remember when the various decor items in attractions weren't bolted down, and there weren't sensors on merchandise. it took quite a few years before wdw started securing everything that could easily (and/or not so easily) stolen :sad2:

and i don't think it's just renters or exchangers - if someone has the morals of a thief, buying into DVC would probably just give them more of a sense of entitlement (as in, "i paid so much money in dues, we should take this doohickey"). conversely, someone who wouldn't consider stealing isn't likely to start just because they are renting.

since family vacationers are most common....more than the increase in dues to cover the missing items, it is really disturbing that someone might be teaching their children that robbery is acceptable :sad1:
