What Do I Need To Use A Flat-Iron?

ok, i finally broke down and bought a flat-iron to straighten my hair, but i haven't had the guts to use it yet. what do i need to go with it? do i need a special conditioner for my hair b/c of the high heat? a special brush or something? help me out here y'all, i really don't have a clue, lol.

There are several smoothing shampoos and conditioners out there but by all means use some sort of thermal protectant. They are made for heat styling. ALWAYS keep the iron moving. DON"T crank it up to the highest setting. Try not to use it every day. I tell my clients to shampoo and dry their hair at night then iron in the morning. They generally like their hair better the next day. Using small sections makes for better results too.

thank you so much! do i need to go to a beauty supply store to buy a thermal protectant? i would only be using the flat iron once or twice a week, or maybe only on special occasions-i'll have to see how well i work with it, lol.

It's worth a stop in a salon to have a stylist look and feel your hair. Some products are heavier than others. They will steer you in the right direction. And don't worry about salon product prices. They can carry many different brands to fit most budgets. And there is almost always something on sale.

Try This: (I hope the link works) If the link does not work, google CHI infra treatment thermal protective treatment. It will be your best friend! They also have spray to put on your hair just before you use the iron to protect your hair that rocks! I love this stuff, and no longer use anything else on my hair. My hair gets bone dry if I do not use a good moisturizing shampoo/conditioner AND the CHI stuff. You can get the CHI products at many salons as well as Target and Walmart. Good luck!

You may also want a shine serum. If you have dull hair, A flat iron can make it more dull. I use a tiny bit of shine serum on the ends. so they aren't too dry.

Also if it is raining or humid you may not want to bother straightening your hair as it won't stay that way.

I was going to say an outlet to plug it into . I can't use any of the 'gunk' on my hair if I use a straightener.

I usually put a styling product in my hair before flat-ironing.

I use a smoothing product from Aveda for high heat. My hair needs it to stay straight after being flat ironed.

When they do it at the salon, they will blow out my hair first with a rolling brush to get most of the kinks out and then flat iron. (styling product applied when hair is damp.)

But you have to sample and see what works for you.

I also have thin hair--but A LOT of it. So I get hair clips (like they use at the salon--I think you can find them at Walmart). To clip sections of my hair and keep them out of the way. Over time you may not need them anymore. But this helps me to get done more efficiently.

I use a heat spray by Tresemme. I straighten my hair pretty much daily and my stylist says my hair is in excellent condition without the fancy schmancy product. Also, like a previous poster mention, a some clips might help you straighten more efficiently. I personally section about four times using a basic hair tie and an old claw clip.

thanks everyone! i asked my new (been to her once so far) stylist and she really wasn't specific about what i needed, although she was the one who gave me the hairstyle, lol, i've been leaving it curly and just dealing with it so far, but honestly, i'm tired of the frizz. i hope i can make it look half as good as she did!
