Help!

I've got a huge ham bone with plenty of meat still left on it. Tell me what do do with it? soup, stews?

I need some recipies!!!!!

Thanks.

Ham bones are great to make pea soup. If you have al ot of ham you could use some of it for ham salad. I am at Disney so I do not have access to my resipe.

Well, what I do is make beans and ham. I throw the bone in a slow cooker, wash a package of large lima beans, throw those in fill the cooker with water covering the beans and bone, and put in 5 pieces of all spice. Let it cook about 6 hours or so, check it about 5 hours and see if the beans are soft, then take it from there. You could add more water if need be. :goodvibes

I through mine into a giant stock pot with some onions. Let that boil away for a couple of hours, the meat will start to fall off the bone. Than I toss in some chopped carrots, celery and yellow split peas. Let that cook until everything's tender pull out the bone and take anymore meat off it. Serve it with a nice rustic loaf of bread and side salad for supper.

If it was summer, I would say fresh green beans. Pea soup is really good, I like to have quite a bit of meat left on the bone for that.

Ham stock is made by putting the bone in a big pot, covering with water. Add - traditionally - onions, carrots and celery, salt and pepper and a bay leaf. Let simmer pretty much all day (six hours is pretty standard in stock recipes - with most people thinking it only gets better if you let it go ten or twelve). Remove the ham bone - most of the meat should fall off, but you may need to let it cool and cut the rest off. Then turn the meat and stock into soup.

Ham works particular good for bean soups - pretty much any beans or peas can be thrown into the pot. I like spinich. Potatos and cabbage are both good soup fillers. The thing with soup is that it really doesn't take a recipe - you throw in the vegetables that sound good to you, cook them up and serve them (though with peas or lentils if you want a good thick soup you need to get the proportions right - but thin pea soup still tastes fine). If you use dry beans (which are really cheap) you'll need to read the package so they cook. Same with fresh veggies - look in a cookbook so you don't get overcooked cabbage and raw potato to get a timing estimate. If you use canned beans and frozen vegetables your meal can be ready fifteen minutes after you get the stock done.

I have a great recipe that is white beans, spinich, a touch (like a tablespoon or two) of tomato paste, and some italian seasoning - maybe carrots and onions (can you tell I throw things into the pot as I go?).

Soups are a great time to experiment with cheap root vegetables. Turnips and rutabages get no respect, but are surprisingly tasty in soup.

Give it to the dog!

NO! NO! NO!

That is a terrible idea. Every year around Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter veterinary clinics see lots of very sick dogs with pancreatitis. Many of them don't survive. The poor owners never thought they might be killing their dog with a "treat".

My dog got very ill last month from a ham bone. Never again.....

I make bean soup with ours. I'm gonna have to try my hand at pea soup one of these days.

My dog had the worst diarrhea from a ham bone. It was a nightmare! :scared1: We then discovered other friends had given ham bones to their dogs with the same result. Never, ever again!

What is Ham, cabbage and potato soup...and do you have the recipe?

Make beans and rice, rice and beans. I always put my leftover ham bones in with my pinto beans.

Red Beans & Rice. Soak your beans for a couple of hours. Saute chopped onions, bell peppers and garlic in a little oil. Add the ham bone and the red beans. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Add creole seasonings and a bay leaf. Let boil until the beans are creamy! Serve over rice. Yummy! My family likes it when I also add some of the ham that I had cut off and chunked.
