What do I do with a ham bone?

You can give dogs beef marrow bones -- they will be totally psyched and they're only a couple of dollars.

Never give your dog preserved meats like ham -- they can't process the chemicals and it often means a swift trip to the emergency vet, or at minimum some really ugly gastrointestinal stuff. The smile on your dog's face isn't worth a $3000 vet bill or a dead dog - not when there are alternatives that are safe and delicious.

Also, never give your dog any cooked bones as they can splinter.

personally, I will give the dogs ham bits or whatever,as I feed it to my kids, and I worry more about their digestive systems...;) but I DID take their bones away-sad doggies!
.....not trying to argue really, just that ham is *not* technically a doggie no-no,like onions or chocolate.......
Also, I discovered I have to leave a solid layer of ham on the bone, then toss it in the soup, this way,no shards come off. Then I pull it out,and pluck off bits of edible ham to add back in......

I am not trying to argue with you either, but I worked in a veterinary clinic for ten years and saw people actually lose their beloved pets because they unknowingly gave them a delicious treat. I am sure some dogs might not get sick, but a significant number of them get sick and some of them die.

I would be willing to guess that more dogs die from eating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter ham than died from eating contaminated dog food.
