We are planning a short trip to Edinburgh to stay in a nearby castle for my 40th and have booked our carhire through Budget - a Focus manual £80 for 3 days - have just had an email from easyjet we can book with europcar via them and get a Mercedes C180 for £139 - really don't know what to do now. Any views would be appreciated. Thanxs

Would depend what you want to use the car for.
Edinburgh Council has made it a very car unfriendly place.

As the previous poster mentioned it would depend on where you were intending to go.

I'm recently back from a business trip to Edinburgh.

The place is so nice that I'm also planning on going back for pleasure at some stage.

Now, the deal from Easy Jet is good BUT Edinburgh isn't that big and it's de-regulated bus heaven!

It's a bit like driving in Central london - an experience, but for the unitiated it'll be hell and parking is expensive and hard to find. Much better to use the (very cheap) public transport.

But, if you intend to get out into the countryside and beyond then go for the Merc.

We spent a weekend in Edinburgh last year with friends and decided on the taxi route - don't even go there, it cost us a small fortune - from the airport to the hotel up in Braid Hills, a 10 minute bus ride, but we were running a bit late so decided on a taxi down to the Dungeons, then we'd picked up the wrong suitcase (or rather someone had nabbed Katie's without realising and left us with theirs, they were identical so we didn't realise until we tried to unlock it later that evening), so a tax back to the airport and back to the hotel - again - and then another one to the airport the following day. £280 in taxis between us when we could have picked up an Easyjet hire car for £100 and been more "in control" of our journies.

You live and learn, but we still had a great weekend :flower:

Thanks for your replies - I don't suppose that we will be actually driving in Edinburgh, as the castle is about 40 mins drive from there, so would be more in the area - have almost decided to go with the Merc. afterall your only 40 once - I hope!!!
