I was reading somewhere about things people brought and didn't use, like over the door shoe hangers. We haven't gone yet, so this info could be very helpful, I always overpack. I figure if I have 10 people telling me they all brought the same thing but didn't use it, then I probably wouldn't either. :)

So, what did you pack for your cruise but never used?

Too many clothes....... Less is REALLY best.
Funny this is my comment as I am now taking 4 suitcases for 4 people. My goal was two suitcases.....
My father always said when I came home from college breaks he wished they would teach a packing course. He would call me the bag lady. At least now 15 years later I've upgraded to real suitcases and are no longer carting my stuff around in shopping bags.

I didn't use the motion sickness medicine I brought, but I might not be so lucky next time! I also didn't use the extension cord -- that's about it.

4 bags for 4 people sounds pretty heavy for me! I had ONE BIG SUITCASE for four people (plus one large tote bag, which was carried on). DH had a suit, the girls and I had dresses for dinner each night. We had two swimsuits each and an outfit per day. We planned our shoes carefully. We didn't want for a thing -- we just packed carefully!

We didn't use the extension cord or the earplugs for the safety drill. It was not loud.

Next cruise I'm leaving 3/4 of the clothes I took for DD.

We bought her this cute little tropical outfit in St. Maarten...and she wore it for the rest of the cruise. DH kept telling her that
she had an "odor"..so she'd wear something else and it didn't work..of course it wasn't true...but he tried.

Some of the popular packing list recommends that we have never needed include:

Extension cords
Duct Tape
Seasick (and most other medication)
Alarm clock
Hairdryer
2-way radios

-I brought 3 bathing suits and only used 1.
-Didn't need the over the door shoe hanger because the bathrooms had plenty of storage space.
-I didn't need the night light - we just left the closet door open a little.
-The Medical Center has free sea-sick medicine right outside their door so you don't need to bring that either.
- We brought our camcorder but didn't end up using it one bit.

What I did need was the extension cord. My hairdryer has a big plug that didn't fit since the outlet was so close to the desk. Also, extra hangers were a life saver.

We had four people and 8 (yes, 8) bags - one bag for each person, one bag with shoes only, (one mom, two DD's, and DH with size 15 shoes), one bag with Christmas tree, lights, decorations, door decorations, electronics, and misc. hardware stuff, and one electric guitar.

Have to agree with NAT&MAGSMOM - too many clothes in the dd-13's bag (she packed herself with a list I prepared -- I think she tossed it in the garbage on her way into her room to pack), plus her 2 carry-ons stuffed - the rule is you have to carry what you pack, and there was a lot of whining, especially on disembarking Sat - she stayed up way to late and got up way too early (to make last breakfast with our Dis gang).

The grownups are all unpacked. We are going to unpack DD-13 tonight (we came home and found one of our cats really ill--spent all day at the after hours Vet yesterday, and she had to be put to sleep today

)so we are a little behind. I plan on having her take the clothes she actually wore and put them in one pile, and the clothes she didn't wear in another pile, hoping that she will understand that she took way too much.

From GenieDana's list, we used all of those items except for the alarm clock - wake up call on the cabin phone worked great.

We used the duct tape to stabilize the tree (rolled a piece over on itself and fastened the base of the tree to the table with no marks on the table at the end of the cruise).

We used the hairdryer for two girls with very long hair, and one Mom who is always in a hurry (the cabin dryers are terrible).

We used the Walkie-talkies every day onboard to keep up with DD-13 and her friends (one of whom was 12, and they did not want to do the 10-12 program, and Disney would not let her do the Stack), used them in Grand Cayman and Cozumel when we split up to shop, and put the rest of our Dis friends on the same frequency for CC - so DHs could find us after their fishing trip, and so that we could keep up with the teens at their beach, making sure everyone arrived at their excursions on time.

We used the extension cord to plug in the tree (with lights), the lights we put around our porthole, the battery charter for the 2-ways, the electric guitar so it could be played over on the bed, 2 cell phone chargers, and our battery recharger.

I have gotten so sea sick on smaller charter fishing vessels that once I was going to have the captain radio for a helicopter, as I knew that I would not make it the 22 miles back to port. I used the seasick medication twice - once in the middle of the night when I had to get up with DD-13 who had eaten too much rich food and the boat was really rocking -- I had been lying in bed thinking about the fact that I was really feeling the motion and not feeling well - took it and was able to get to sleep and felt great in the morning; and the other time after CC when I had one (one only) Conk Cooler with alcohol in it at the end of the day which gave me some sort of bad lower GI symptoms, which at first I thought was seasickness. Did feel much better after the Bonine, though.

DH had purchased two over-the-door shoe holders, but only one got in the bag - he actually put the shoes in it (I had meant it for toiletries, etc.). Since we had so many shoes, it was full, and we could have used the second - batteries, 2-ways, film, cell phones, chargers, etc. were all over the place - had to spend too much time hunting things down some days. I would bring two the next time.

If we can keep this thread going, jgalecpa (young, good looking guy with the big fish and a great personality and sense of humor) will be home tomorrow. I know Rieann has a few things in mind that she brought that she did not use, and he will be posting the same. They did actually need the WD-40.

I did not do a very thorough job on my medicine (suprisingly, as DH is an MD), and the one thing requested by a DD was a Band-Aid - did I have one? No.

I think it will be hard to get a consensus on this post!!

Too many shoes and clothes...despite a limit of one suitcase per person (7 day). Best hint...do you have a pair of sandles in a color that will go with your evening clothes (either black or white?) This could easily be your "main" shoe for the ship. You really don't need heels.

That is my sentiments exactly; one pair of dressy black sandals.

I brought beach towels, not realizing that DCL provides them for you. We also got a beach towel for being in the castaway club so that was another towel we had to pack to bring home!

I also brought a travel alarm clock, but used the wake up call instead. The other thing I brought but didn't use was a night light for DD's. We just left the closet light on for them.

Too many casual clothes. We spent most of the time in swimsuits, and only wore the shorts outfits for about 2-3 hours a day. I also did laundry during the week. I used the shoe hangar for all the little things (including the little things I wanted out of the kids reach like medicine!). I didn't bring a hair dryer, because I always let mine air dry. I did use the extension cord. If you have any chargable things like camera, etc there are only two usable plugs in the room.

They now have a clock in the room. The advice to bring one was when there wasn't one in the rooms.

What did I pack that I didn't use...ALOT!!

TOO MANY CLOTHES (I packed 3 bathing suits but used only one, too many pairs of shorts and shirts as well as shoes....take everyone's advise, pack a pair of sandals, I wore mine to dinner and my tennies during the day, and water shoes for the pool and the beaches)
Over the door hanger (we were in a cat 9 and was surprised at all the storage space).
duct tape, alarm clock, band aids, pepto, night light, dryer sheets, laundry soap, 2 way radios, flash light, heating pad, ice pack

Things I used and would definately pack again.....
extension cord (the outlets are close to the desk and if you have anything with a big plug it won't fit), collapsable hamper, ziploc bags (maybe not as many..I had 1 box of sand. bags and one box bigger storage bags), post its, highlighters, batteries, air freshners, clothes pins (I used 8 but packed about 24),small cooler (actually used my work lunch box), pre-typed adddress labels (for post cards and to put on my return home luggage tags)

Had I followed my own advise I could have easily taken a small suitcase instead of an extra large one. it was my first cruise but I'll know better for next time.

Hope this helps,
Cindy

We are just finishing up packing (leaving in 2 hours!) and the best thing we bought for this cruise that we didn't have before is a really GOOD garment bag. The new kind that rolls and holds lots of stuff. We are taking the 4 night wonder and in that garment bag we have all of our dinner clothes plus their accessories (we have a formal night for NYE).

We also have one other suitcase with shoes, daytime clothes (I ALWAYS bring extra underwear even if we don't end up needing it, it takes up little room), swimsuits, snorkel gear and toiletries. It seems that before we got the nice garment bag we were always needing a separate bag for toiletries and snorkel gear because we had too much stuff for one suitcase with the lousy garment bag.

It also helps that even though we are going in January, the weather is forecasted to be warm. The last few years we have gone in January we have taken MUCH longer trips (this is a 4 night cruise and one day at the parks as opposed to a week cruise and a week at the parks) and the weather was uncertain so we had to be prepared for anything with hats, coats, gloves, sweaters and clothes for warmer weather. I tell you, with just two bags it sure as heck FEELS like we are packing a lot lighter than usual! Just warm sweater each "in case."

Otherwise, I pretty much use everything I take with the exception of medicines, but those are a "just in case" thing anyway!

I agree with everyone to many clothes and shoes. We lived in our bathing suits. The second cruise we took, we bought by DBF 3 slacks instead of 7 slack and then we just bought 7 shirts that could go with shorts/slacks. Then I bought some of those dresses that you could turn inside/out and you had 2 dresses in 1. It was great. I didnt need the door hanger, ext cord, extra batteries, camcorder, books, or extra makeup or sea sick pills. I overpacked on our first cruise and the second I trimmed it down alot. The third I went down even more.
