Eros, maybe I need to rephrase my question to.... What Country OR Planet are your ancestors from????:jester: :bounce:

KTeacher, what an interesting story. My whole family is from Italy (Sicily to be exact). One of my father's ancestors was "found" ;) by a Bishop and his housekeeper, so our last name is the Italian word for found.

Apparently, from what I've been told, there was land in Sicily that could have been claimed by any of the next six generations of males, provided they became clergy. That generation ended with my father's generation and nobody has claimed the land, so it stays with the church.

THANKS, KITTY :D :D :D . Actually, there are a few members here who are truly OUT OF THIS WORLD .....:jester: :jester: :jester:

I am pretty much all German. DH is quite a mix. He is French, Russian, Irish and Spanish (one quarter of each).

my father's parents came from a shtetl in the Ukraine, near Kiev. thye spoke Yiddish and Russian. I'm not sure about my maternal grandfather, but I think he came from Hungary or Romania. My maternal grandmother came from a region called Galicia, which is now part of Poland but was part of Austria when she was born.

my maternal grandmother had a Spanish surname, so I suspect her ancestors were Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 who wandered eastward to Poland.

My father's family surname is "Cohen". the "Kohanim" are the priests, the descendants of Moses' brother Aaron. recent genetic studies have been able to trace a common gene among all those who claim to be Kohanim. the gene can be traced back 700 years.

my children have an interesting mix. in addition to Eastern European Jewish ancestry, they allso have Mediterranean roots. my former mother in law was a Sephardic Jew, whose family was based in Greece and Turkey.

My maternal Grandmother was born in County Tipperary, Ireland.
My maternal Grandfather was born in Cumbria in the North of England. My Mother was also born in Cumbria, and came here after she married my Father in 1958.

My paternal Grandfather was born in Quebec, Canada and moved here as a boy. His side of the family came to Canada from France in the 1660s from what we have been able to find out.

My ancestors are from Greece (on my dad's side). Uh I think on my mom's side they come from Ireland, England, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and here (Native American). :D

According to the geneology on my mother's side, we are decended from William the Conquerer.
My maiden name was Van Antwerp. So I always guessed that my fathers' ancestery originated from Antwerp (Belguim). -- Van meaning "From".

My mother is a full-blooded Dutchman who didn't move to the US until she was 21 and married to my Dad. My Dad's mother was Norwegian. Her parents immigrated to the US with their families met in Illinois. My Dad's father was a combination of many heritages. My aunt has traced a lot of that family tree and the majority of our ancestors on that side were English and French.

Father's side - Germany
Mother's side - Ireland

Mostly Celtic--Irish on my mom's side, Irish-Scottish (via Canada) on my dad's side.

Shhhhh, don't tell, I am working on a surprise for my mom. When I turn 40, I am taking her to Ireland, just the two of us. I have started a payroll deduct direct deposit savings accound and she already has a passport, so I will absolutley be able to surprise her, and we can 'find' our roots.

I'm very excited, and it is 4 LOOOOONNNNGGG years away!

Father's side German
Mother's side German...........but I was raised by 2 Irish parents! OK I was adopted!

I have been very surprised at what my limited genealogical research has turned up.

Most of my relatives on both sides have been farmers/laborers in Alabama for several generations.

Like most of us in this region, I expected to find Scotch/Irish as the most prevelant bloodline.

Instead, I have found my closest relative who arrived in the US was a French Huguenot and I have found several German ancestors as well.

But it's more important to know where we are going than where we have been!

1/2 Hungarian from my Father's family. Part German and Scottish from my Mother's family.
