What color would you paint...

Over on another part of the DIS, we were talking about kitchens. I posted some pics (link below). But we have white cabinets, grey speckled counters. There is an accent wall in a sage green and the rest is white. I didn't do this, it was how we moved in. It might have been what I chose, but since I didn't, I want to change it. :lmao: I'm thinking of a deep Mediterranean blue (not teal though) for around the cabinets, and then a lighter shade on the other walls. I wouldn't have thought about it, but I bought some coasters on clearance at Target in those colors, and then I thought, "this would actually be cute." Plus, I've been on a Med kick ever since we went to the coast of Spain a few years ago.

Another vote for w grey blue. Our office is that color oan the top half and white below the chair rail. Its definitely not too dark in there so i think with white cabinets you'd be fine. On sunny days our room looks blue and on rainy days looks light grey.

I'd go exactly where your husband doesn't want to - bold, dark colors. With everything being so light, my first thought was to go with a barn red or a cobalt blue. For something lighter, maybe a smoky/muted or French-country shade of blue?

Exactly what I was going to say! My countertops and floor are white (from when I moved in) and my cabinets are a medium oak and sage looks really good with those colors.

I was also thinking this. Ina Garten's kitchen is mostly white with black marble countertops and light wood floors but sage green walls. I love her kitchen! Any shade of blue in a kitchen is considered to depress the appetite - some folks may be going for that?!?

I just painted our kitchen and sunroom a brighter yellow/green color (martha Stewart paint). The best pointer that I would offer is to go to Sherwin Williams or Home Depot and buy several of the small paint samples. view in different times of the day and on several different walls to ensure that you're pleased before you pay for the primer and paint.

I tried yellow in my kitchen with white cabinets and light tan counter and hated it. It needed something darker. We went to a burnt orange color, Terra Cotta I think. It looks fabulous!

There are tools online where you can try different paint colors in rooms. They have stock photos and you can pick a kitchen similar to yours. Some of them let you upload your own photo too.

I like this one.

Also there is one at better homes and gardens bhg.com but you have to register on their site to use it.

All the PPs have great suggestions but I would take a slightly different approach.

First, what colors do you like? Blues, reds, greens, yellows, oranges, plums, purples.....

Second, does your kitchen open to or connect to any other room? What colors are in that room/area? You want a cohesive feel to your house and not jarring color changes. For example, is your dining room off the kitchen painted a taupe? Then go with the terra cotta. It works well with your kitchen colors and would compliment the taupe of your dining room. Or is your breakfast room blue? Then paint your kitchen a coordinating blue or green.

The great thing about going and looking at paint chips is that not only are there different shades on the same one, they frequently have collections that have different colors that work well together shown on the same card/flyer.

Good Luck! (and post pics when you're done!)

Two thoughts, both in the smoky blue range:
-Silvered sage by Restoration Hardware
-Quiet Rain by Glidden (sold at Home Depot)

I like and have a mellow yellow in my kitchen, but for your kitchen you might want to embrace the fact that gray is hot now and with the gray counters you could have a very current look with gray-blue or smoky blue IMHO, also with the silver knobs a gray-blue or smoky blue would look very pretty. If you can do any other wood accessories (kitchen table etc) in an espresso or dark wood color you will have a transitional (updated traditional) look. :goodvibes

I like the idea of red.

A thought that might help. Why not take a picture of your kitchen and play with MS's paint and fill in the colors on the wall and see what you like. You can find paint colors online, save the picture and use the "dropper" to capture the color. Use the new color, to color in the walls to see how you like it. If you make the paint page large enough, you could just drag new pictures for the color onto it without having to have more than one going at a time (leave your kitchen pic on the bottom and the new one just paste and it will automatically be on top). If you like what you have and want to show your hubby, save it and start a new paint page.

(I hope you can follow that, sometimes I don't type as fast or as thoroughly as I think it.:headache:)

Sage green;)

This is what I was thinking. There are lots of greens so you might want to take some samples home and put them on the floor, then countertops to see which one works. You'd be suprised how different they can be or change when other colors are against them.

A medium-light blue-based brown/taupe--kind like a cafe latte or mocha color. It really pops with white.

I just painted our kitchen, with the exact features you described, a blue/gray color. It's by Olympic and it's called smoke screen. We got it at Lowe's. It looks FANTASTIC!

Enjoy whatever color you decide on.

My kitchen has a touch of red (the soffit?) which your DH won't like and the rest of the walls are white - BUT I have a Mickey Mouse kitchen. I have red, white, black Mickey heads stenciled at the top of the walls. Love it!

I have the blue/grey in my dining room - the kitchen has the tile up all of the wall to the cabinets so no spot to paint there.

I just wanted to say make sure you use a kitchen/bath paint & wash the walls before you start painting. that way it doesn't peel off from having grease or something under your new paint job. water & dishsoap then rinse with plain water & let dry

I love yellow kitchens, but sage green would be great too. Just make sure that it isn't the institutional green ughh.

weve got white cabinets, neutral floor...we went with a very light cream yellow color. Its a scherwin williams color....that translated to "cream"..but its got a soft yellow cast to it. We love it.
