We just moved to Syracuse last fall. Dh's company is restructuring and they want us to move to Albany. No pressure, but it would be better. I know nothing about Albany. I am just starting to get to know Syracuse...I love our house, our neighborhood.

HELP!!!

MIL used to live in Albany....I emailed the page to her...maybe she will have some input.

I went to school in Albany 20 years ago, but I can't imagine it's changed that much.

It's definitely a college town, as there are quite a few colleges in the area (SUNY, RPI, Albany Law School). Also, the downtown area houses the government offices. Overall, it seemed to be a good "neighborhood". I lived off campus as well and never felt not safe.

I don't distinctly remember if there were good areas and bad areas. I also remember there was over 8 feet of snow my senior year (ugh!!!)

ditto what Donna said. I went to SUNY Albany and thought the area was very nice. but my information is also 20 years out o date.

C.Ann mentioned that she lives int he ALbany area. she doens't post on the CB much these days, but you might want to PM her.

Oh RATS!!!!!!!!!!! When I saw this topic I jumped at the chance to tell you EVERYTHING you need ed to know...BUT I am from ALBANY GEORGIA!!!!! I would suppose that you have NO interest in moving here!!!

Here I am!! I may not post here that much anymore (busy with my eBay thread over on the Budget Board and all the trip-planning boards for the trip to Disney World that ebay is going to finance for me:)), but I still drop in to read sometimes and see what's up..

Now - as for Albany.. I guess it's a pretty neat place to live.. It's very centrally located to loads and loads of things.. An hour or so to Saratoga Race Track, about an hour and 20 minutes to Lake George (a beautiful resort town with an awesome amusement park), an hour and 15 minutes to the Adirondack Mountains with all sorts of lakes and camping availabilities, an hour or so to the Catskill Mountains, and on and on.. Plenty to do locally (a GREAT museum), loads of shopping malls, interstates to get you places quickly, a beautiful airport to fly out of to Disney World :), etc..

You can live in SO many different areas here - and yet never be more than maybe a half-hour drive to work - if that.. I would suggest East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Guilderland, Latham, Loudonville, Colonie, Rotterdam, etc.. None would take you more than a half-hour to get to Albany and some would be more like ten minutes..

If you want to know anything specific, feel free to PM me - I have lived in the Albany area all my life..:)

Albany is a great area.....I grew up in the Berkshires in Pittsfield MA, just 10 miles from the NY border.....Albany was our "Boston"...if you wanted a museum, Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) for summer concerts, etc and shopping, we would head over there. I also looked at Siena College in Loudonville and it was such a beautiful area...scholarship (or lack thereof) was the only reason that I didnt go there........

Oh, and one bonus....(hinting you towards the MASS side of the world)....you can take an hour ride to Lee Mass and shop for clothes tax free in Massachusetts at the outlets.
