What camera strap for an slr..

I bought the UP Strap last year and I love it. I did have some reservations about comfort because part that would be padded on some of the others is actually made of rubber, but I'm really happy with it. I was also nervous about using the tripod mount which was the only thing deterring me from getting the Black Rapid, although had the tether come out a month or so sooner (maybe it did and I wasn't aware of it) I would have probably gone with that quite happily. I like the clasps on mine that allow a quick release to remove the strap from the camera so if I don't want movement in a situation where it's windy and I'm doing long exposures, I don't have to mess around with threading straps in and out of the D-rings. I'm useless with those and it takes me forever :rotfl:
I didn't realize Black Rapid had come up with their own tethering system. I kludged one together on my own using one piece from each of these two OP/Tech straps...

It's just a quick snap to undo the tether. The part that stays connected to the camera is small enough that it doesn't get in the way or present anything to swing on a tripod.

It's actually even saved my camera once. Not because my tripod mount gave way, but because I was so totally exhaused that I did something stupid. I was changing lenses. Took the lens off, but the camera down at my side and let go to free up my hand. Normally, this works fine. I let the camera hang on the strap while I exchange the dust covers and get the new lens out. However, in this particular case, I was changing from the 100-400, and the strap was connected to the lens mount, not the camera. The tether caught the camera before it hit the floor. Best $15 I ever spent.

Here's a vote for the Black Rapid!! :thumbsup2

So which one did you choose Carol??

Well...... I'm sitting here looking at the Crumpler "Convenient Disgrace" next to my camera.....and...yesterday got a discount coupon (good till Sept) from the on line store where I bought the camera for..... $69.00.

So hard to pass up a discount like this...so I put in my "cart" the BR Kick (for women), tether (for sure) and large "pouch" .....and the price came out to $42.00 and free shipping.

Yea...now Im sitting here playing "upside down" camera scenerios in my head...and going to connect the Crumpler and see how the "across body" feels.

Yea...STILL absolutely uncertain what to do...:faint::faint:

I hear what your saying about the upside down thing but I have never found it to be an issue. In fact most of the time the camera is in my hand anyway ready to shoot. I don't use tether either I just double check the fastener from time to time. Never any issues. :thumbsup2

I have tried multiple straps over the years (and waist belts with quick releases, etc) and I LOVE the BR system. Camera always at the ready, no neck pains, and holds very well. I use it while pushing a wheelchair around MK, Epcot, HS, AK and have no issues.

Get over the upside down fear. It's a few instances that are overblown. If you check the tightness occasionally you'll realize that it doesn't come loose.

YMMV,

Boris

Op Tech Utility Sling. Best $22 I've ever spent on camera gear. Attaches to one of your strap points instead of the tripod ring like a Black Rapid. I hang a 7D and 20-200 2.8 off mine when shooting sports and no fear of detachment. It carries great and is very comfortable. The pictures show it attaching to the right loop, but I use the left on mine. Just works better for me.

I think the stories of failing tripod mounts with blackrapids come from either people not ensuring it's screwed in properly, and from the entry level cameras. Nikon D3100,3200,3300 and Canon Rebel cameras.

I know I feel like I could tow my car with the tripod mount on my 7D. I know I would not be comfortable hanging my camera from only one of the strap mounts. Not sure they're designed for horizontal forces like that.

I agree!! I have never had been come even remotely loose using the tripod mount.

I purchased a sling strap through ebay for $6.79. It was called a Rapind Fast Quick Shoulder Sling Strap. Used it last week at WDW an it was fantastic. You can't beat it for the price. The part that goes over your shoulder is neoprene. The camera slides up the strap very easily.

I have personally seen tripod mounts fail. Not with a BR strap, but in other instances. It does happen.

I wouldn't go with just one of the strap mounts either. Especially when I consider the weight of some of my lenses.
