What brands are your kids asking for this year?

I'm lucky because my DS (16) won't wear anything that the "preps" wear. I do, however, hate that there are all these groups now (preps, skaters, goth, etc.) and they WILL NOT dress or even go to other places that the other goes to....it is crazy! It wasn't like that when I was in school (early 80s). Anyway, he likes Old Navy. It is fine with me because of the prices. I do buy him Aeropostle from time-to-time and he likes their stuff also. He will only wear Vans shoes. He's not a skater either. He says they're comfortable.

I have a son heading into 10th grade and a daughter entering her freshman year at college.

DD loves Hollister, American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch - but she waits and hits their sales and scores big time! Skirts that were originally $40.00, she gets for around $5.00!! We also shop at Penney's, Boscovs, and BonTon.

DS is not fussy at all - but he likes American Eagle and Aeropostale

I hit American Eagle last week and scored t-shirts for my son for around $4.00 each. I got a hoodie for him at Aeropostale for $19.99 and lots of shorts and pants for $14.99-$19.99. He likes Sketchers shoes.

My DD's are 6 & 8, they really dont care when it comes to shirts, but jeans, are either Mudd or LEI...a few pair of gap thrown in the mix.

Shirts, I buy at Wal-Mart, because they trash them during art class and recess etc...

The Mudd and LEI jeans hold up very well- the 8 year olds go to the 6 year old every spring.

Sketchers sneakers- and Lands End Moc's....

oh- and Joe Boxer (kmart) undies for DD8, she loves the faces on em.???

They really dont ask for brands, I buy them the same stuff I buy myself, they've got gap, old navy, mudd, lei, guess, etc.. because thats what I have basically....and sears has 0% till January 2005 right now on all clothes/shoes, plus being a sears premier member we got a huge coupon booklet with 25% off etc...

I did grab a bunch of short sleeved shirts at JC Penney last night, as they were on clearance, I spent $38.95 and saved over $100 on their clearance stuff...whoohoo!

Even though my DS goes to a small small school, he is considered a "prep" ..........I'm gathering because he dresses preppy, and plays all sports????? He does, however LOVE Van shoes too.

We have a very few "Goth" children, mostly in the upper grades.

We don't have any skaters here but the kids who wear the really baggy and big clothes are called Grungy????

Then there are the ""Red Necks"" who go to another school and wear K-Mart and Wal-Mart clothes and shoes.

Its really all confusing to me...........because I love WAL-Mart clothes.....LOL!!!!!!

Beauty, that is exactly the way it is here. Do you live in the South? DS isn't in any group. He has 2-3 really good friends and they are jocks. DS is into drama. He wants to be a stand-up comic or a director one day. He has already written two screenplays. He is 6'2" and is constantly harped at because he doesn't play football. It is funny because we live in-between some preps and they won't have anything to do with each other even though they are the same age. He's a good kid so I don't give him a hard time. I figure he'll make his way in his own time. I just wish that there wasn't so many cliques. I hated them in high school and I hate them now.

I have two teenager's. My older DS, 16, could care less what he wears as long as I buy it. We did go to Old Navy this summer because he wanted some polo's to wear to golf in. Usually he wears what is on top of the pile! I have to send him upstairs occ. because he's picked out something that's 5 years old and 3 sizes too small!

My DD 14 on the other hand! She is picky, picky, picky. She's not a prep or a jock or a goth but something inbetween and very much her own person. She just bought a pair of Chuck Taylor's in dark red and gold to go with the black one's she own's. Pants have to not ride high on the waist and she favors darker colors but not much black. T-shirts are either plain or have sayings on them but only certain sayings. No polo's or bright colors. Did I mention that she wear's a 00 or a 0! She likes pants from abercrombie because we can get them to fit but I don't like the price. She is so hard to fit though that I give in and buy abercrombie but I like to find it on sale. Hard to do when you don't have an abercrombie in your town.

At what age do the kids start asking for specific designers/brands? My kids will most likely pick that up from school because I don't stress it at home-one brand is better than the other. I do buy Polo and Tommy when it is on sale for 75% off, but I don't point out to them that it is designer.

I do, however, let them pick out their own character tennis shoes (WalMart-$14.00), backpacks, and lunch boxes to get them excited about starting school.

I don't remember "brand importance" when I was growing up in the dark ages before designer jeans. I just knew that there were some clothes from K-Mart which I refused to wear, others were OK.

is it just me or are the stores like aeropostale, american eagle, express and that sort of thing for teenagers?? because i see tons of kids wearing those brands and i am thinking well some of the shirts are not appropriate for adults let alone kids and yet there are kids wearing 'em. but anyhow... i wear stuff from american eagle, aeropostale, kohls, and anything that i think is cute thats what i buy. i frankly couldnt care less what people think of me by my clothes. if they dont like me for me then forget about them!!

Yep I'm in Mississippi and your right!!

You know we have three private schools here and my son goes to the smallest one.

If he went to the large one (very very large) I don't think he would be considered a "Prep" But since there are all of 13 kids in his entire class he is, because he is only one of two of the boys (there are 5 boys) that plays all of the sports.

He has 3 really good friends but 2 of them go to other schools. He has one best friend at his school but is friendly with everyone. He also LOVES being funny (sometimes to the point of being stupid...think Adam Sandler or Jim Carry).

We were in the mall last weekend and one of the "Goth" girls walked by us....she was in all black including her lipstick, nail polish and dyed hair. He looked at me (hes only 7th grade so still pretty innocent about the cliques) and said THEY SCARE ME!!!! Its like they are going to shoot out fire with their eyes or something.

I don't ever remember any Goth type people in the 80s when I was in high school so I really didn't comment to him because I had no idea what to say. Like your son, he can be his own person at times but he also follows the grain of the older football players that he wants to be just like. Sometimes I wish he didn't follow the trends so much. For example he was being really stupid one day last week and saying things like,

"""Hi, My name is Eugene and I like Tater Tots!"""" He was saying it really stupid and had me laughing. Then he said """"I like cows, yep milk is good"""" again in that silly voice and I taped it on my truck tape player. He then told me to not play that to his friends because it would embarass him. I told him that his sense of humor was part of who he was and he should NEVER be embarasses about something he is good at. I was in a clique in high school and at times it was the most AWFUL thing....I just want him to be happy.

Wow, it is great to see so many kids are not so brand concious as we were in school. My neices say the same thing...that brands are not that important, but that 'look' is.

I don't mind spending a lot on clothes IF they are well made, but I hate overpriced junk like Limited too.

DD will be 13 soon and goes to private school. She's had a bug up her crack for a year for a Coach purse. DH and I agreed that it wasnt a great idea to encourage her to conform, so we compromised a bit, and splurged on a Louis Vuitton. She also swears by her Nikes (1 new pair a year). Also, not a brand but still, she's been nearly peeing herself for nearly a year for a cellular phone, and we finally cracked. After all, she could really have an emergency some time...

Other than that, she loves the store Hot Topic and loyally spends all of her allowance $ there

So, tell us... how do you REALLY feel about Limited too.

I actually shop there quite a bit for my youngest. It's one of the only places I can always find shorts/pants in size 6 slim.

I certainly don't like everything they carry - but bought a few really cute things for back to school there this year.

I have things I bought at LTD2 that have held up much better than the pricier clothes my teens get at Abercrombie, Aeropostale, Buckle or Pac Sun (some of their favorite shops)

I DO take advantage of their promo's like too punch Tuesday's and too bucks to bring the cost down.

I have to agree w/ Fresh Teresa....while I do shop there for my DD b/c there things are "cute" and you really can't find things like that elsewhere...for the most part the quality is really poor....for what your paying. I've found better quality at Target!

DD is (almost) 3 and doesn't know brands, but she does know shopping. LOL! She will go to the store with me and pick something and say "this is SO cute!" DH is scared already.

As for brands she obviously doesn't know brands. I just buy her clothes from wherever I find cute stuff. I ordered quite a bit from Land's End and also shop at GAP, Gymboree, Children's Place, and Kohl's. I also LOVE TJMaxx. I got her the cutest sweatsuit and a pair of jeans that are both Ralph Lauren along with 2 Guess shirts for 1/2 of the original price. That is the only way I buy those name brands. And I buy her Sketchers shoes because I like how they fit and how they look.

My boys (15 and 17) aren't so much into brands as they are into looks and how they fit.

I just went shopping for the 17 yr old and he will be wearing jeans, shorts and shirts from JC Penney and Sears. He didn't find anything that he wanted at Marshall Fields. This weekend we will be heading to Younkers, another favorite store of his.

The 15 yr old is real picky but he HATES to go shopping so he is very difficult to buy for.

DD10 (5th grade) doens't care about the brand but DOES care about the look. She likes to look in Limited Too but be don't buy. A couple of months ago we went shopping at Hecht's and she got a cute ruffles skort and 2 shirts for about $25 after sale and extra % off coupon. Later we were walking through the mall and went into Limited Too. They had the identical looking skort for $25. I asked her if she would rather have the one that said Limited Too on the label or the 2 pieces of clothing she had in her bag for the same price. It was a very valuable lesson she learned that day.

DD also needs a slim in pants and they are very hard to find. I end up having to pay more than I would like for those but what am I going to do????

My soon to be 12 DS likes UnderArmour. He is also big into jerseys. I think he would prefer an NFL or NBA jersey with a player's name and number on them, but he does have a few from Wal*Mart and seems quite pleased with them as well. Since the NFL & NBA jerseys are a minimum of $65 apiece, I let him receive those as gifts .

This summer DS wore a lot of Fruit of the Loom solid colored T-shirts ($3.88 at Wal*Mart) along with mesh shorts (also from Wal* Mart $5-10 a pair). DS has many T-shirts from places or events that he will also wear.

Funny thing is, I asked him yesterday if he wished that his school did not have a uniform and he said he liked wearing a uniform because it made him feel like everyone else! I usually get the white shirts and blue sweaters from LandsEnd and the blue trousers from Kohl's.
