What brand of dog food do you buy?

We switched from Iams to Canidae as soon as I found out Iams was all corn and fillers! We have two labs and the one seems always hungry since she's been on it, they seem to do much better with the Wellness Core. Our girls would eat anything they are labs! As far as the "poop" goes, there is a big difference in the holistic diet versus the corn filler diet. I feed each dog one cup twice a day so a bag lasts a while (they also get a can of green beans for a snack, vet recommended it for the oldest because she was getting a little heavy and the younger one can't be left out so she wants beans too). Major difference in the coats, they are so much softer now.

wellness canned chicken formula for the beagle with major health issues

wellness chicken for 2 others

blue buffalo fish and sweet potato

canidae all life stages (but phasing that out because they changed the formula and its no longer doing well with my guys)

remember dogs do not digest corn or soy and are often times reactive to wheat. Ear infections cost $$ and are often caused by inferior foods as are kidney issues.

Do you have a Costco near you? I feed my dogs their house brand of food, Kirkland. It's a good food and has no wheat or corn ingredients. It's cheaper than the Eukanuba you used to purchase.

Canidae

dogfoodanalysis.com is an amazing website. I'm actually a bit upset with myself for not doing research when we first go our dog. We feed her Science Diet for the first 6 months and I regret it because of how horrible the food is.

Vets are not nutritionists. Most take 1 general nutrition class (covering all types of animals). Many vets recommend brands because they get money from the companies if they sell it.

Foods like Canidae and Wellness may be more expensive, but you feed a lot less of it because they aren't any fillers.

we got our second dog from abreeder who fed her dogs Purina One. Our other dog was on Science Diet (I used to work for a Vet and yes, those companies do a great job of promoting their food!!) So I read those websites, decided to try one of the *better foods* and the new dog blew his coat horribly. Then He got sick (nothing to do with the food) I switched back to Purina One and switched the other dog on it too and they have been doing just fine with it. I figured if it was good enough for the breeders dogs (they are great looking dogs and win a lot at shows) it was good enough for our dogs!!

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Now I"m mixing it 1/2 and 1/2 with Merrick's Grammy's Pot pie dry food, too, just for a little variety for my dogs. Chepaer food may not be cheaper in the long run, but if you want to do a little better budget-wise, read the labels and see if you can find a comparable food that costs a few dollars less per bag.

Look for foods with NO wheat OR corn and with no "by-products" in it. If you buy a food full of wheat and corn, you'll end up having to feed more food (no savings), scoop more poop (yuck!) and possibly make more trips to the vet if you dog has allergies. "by-products" are just gross and not something you want to be feeding to your pet.

Read the label, just like you would for your own food! That's how you can make an educated choice! BTW, the Whole Dog Journal does a great write-up on foods every year. I think you can get the article by subscribing to their website for a fee.

Another vote for Blue Buffalo, but I use the Blue Buffalo Organic. It IS very expensive, though, about $17 for a 5 lb. bag (if it's that big). BUT my dog is a tiny Pomeranian that only weighs 5 lbs, so this last me about 3 months. Most other things we tried caused us health problems.

The dog I had before this was a terrier mix and we tried the Purina Beneful, but my dog had seizures. Turned out she was allergic to the red food dye in the "meat" bits and the green food die in the "vegetable" bits.

My dog is my only child, so I go a bit nuts with him! :rolleyes1

Pedigree. I did read a post about the kirkland dog food on this board. It really wasnt too much cheeper and all 3 dogs wouldnt eat it and gave them diarrhea.. so we switched back. My older dogs are 11 and 10 and have been on pedigree most of their life.

Canidae, it's good stuff! And from the research I did, not any more expensive because you feed them less because there is less junk in it.

Not to mention, anything that will result in less poo in the back yard is going to be my first choice!! ;)

I have 2 dogs:4yo lab, pointer, pit mix and a 1yo standard poodle-the lab mix can and does eat everything but the poodle has stomach issues . when I got him I did a lot of research and switched him to Solid Gold puppy formula but I think it was too rich for him so then switched to Canidae lamb and rice.he did great until about a month ago-started having terrible n/v/d issues. I found out that they switched the formula so back to the research i went and decided on Natural Balance Ultra for the both of them-they both love it and are doing much better . I too swear by the dogfood analysis web site and am also a regular reader of www.dogforums.com site -lots of good info on there. My family says that I treat the dogs better than them and sometimes I do:rotfl2: After all my furbabies ask for nothing, are always happy to see me and I can do no wrong in their eyes!!!:lmao:

We feed Dog Chow....Our dogs do well on it. Our vet uses dog chow, the vet techs use dog chow. I know alot of people dont like it, but if its good enough for our vet to feed, its good enough for me to feed :goodvibes

It is also cheaper , and since I do animal rescue, I have dogs in and out all the time, and honestly, could not afford a $40-$50 a bag dog food. (I have 8 of my own)

We also feed our dog Purina Dog Chow. We've been using Dog Chow for over 30 years without a problem. To be honest, if the store is out of Dog Chow, I've been known to buy the Wal Mart brand for a week or so. There is absolutely no reason to be spending huge amounts of money on dog food unless your dog has a medical condition.

Oh.......and only one poop per day...just as it should be!:rotfl:

We have two dogs. The 8 month old Beagle gets Eukanuba puppy and the 13 yr old Beagle gets canine k/d. Hers comes from the vet $60 a bag.:dog:

we usually use whatever I have a coupon or what is on sale--

I have used pedigree, kibbles and bits, and one of the walmart brands

I have been giving my dog WholeMeals since I saw them in PetSmart and he loves them.. They are in the shape of a bone and they have a like a chewy outside with a meaty center... I just give it to him ( and he thinks he is getting a treat everytime :rotfl: ) and he just plops down whereever he feels like it and goes to work..

My dog only eats Purina CAT chow senior.:confused3
It does not matter what I give her. She will only eat the cat's food.
So, I just stopped buying dog food. The vet says she is healthy. she is 11 years old.
