Started something last night...."The Preacher's Daughter". So far so good it is about a girl living in an Amish community that communicates via pen pal with a girl that "has it all". I am anxious to see where it goes.......it is already taking some twists.

Has anyone else read it?

I don't know if you remember this ... but from MSNBC:
The release of “The Kite Runner” has been delayed six weeks because of fears for the safety of three of the movie’s Afghan child actors, Paramount Vantage, which is distributing the film, said Thursday.

As violence has escalated in Kabul, Afghanistan, concerns have mounted that the nature of some scenes in “The Kite Runner” could prompt violence against three of the young boys starring in the film. In the film, based on the 2003 best-selling novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini, the story’s main character witnesses an incident with his friend but does nothing to stop it.

“The Kite Runner,” originally scheduled to come out Nov. 2, will now be released Dec. 14 while the three boys — Zekiria Ebrahimi, Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada and Ali Danish Bakhty Ari — are removed from Kabul. It’s feared that when the film is released, pirated DVDs could spread in Kabul, where those culturally offended could react violently to seeing such a scene.

and I found this on Wikipedia:
The scene has been depicted in a less harrowing manner than originally planned: there is no nudity in it, not even underpants are exposed; an attack is shown, and an aspect is suggested only very briefly at the end of the scene, by a trousers buckle being undone, trousers being tugged slightly down, and unzipping a fly. Even for that a body double was used.[4]

I agree that this book was rather moving. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was really impacted by it.
I did not know this. Thank you!

I also picked up the Costant Princess by Phillipa Gregory. I read The Other Boleyn Girl real recently, so it'll be interesting.

I'm really enjoying Constant Princess. I loved Boleyn Girl, but didn't like The Virgin's Lover and The Boleyn Inheritance as much.

I'm also reading The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy by Robert Leleux. It's very funny, kind of like David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs, but not to be confused with Beautiful Boy, about substance abuse.

Plillipa Gregory hasn't written one book I haven't loved!!

World Without End by Ken Follett. It's the follow-up of his Pillars of the Earth, which I loved, but I'm having a hard time getting into this one.

Is this what the movie was based on? It was really good.

Nope, the movies was on WWI, the book is a true story from WWII, of 9 American airman that were shot down over the Pacific, one being George H.W. Bush..which was a closely guarded secret of 66 years.

James Bradley also wrote Flags of Our Fathers, his father was one of the six men to raise the flag over Iwo Jima, John Bradley.

Just finished Atonement this afternoon. Wow, what a really good read. I have a few in my stack I am need to chose from, books I picked up just from reading these threads. I have the choice of The Kite Runner, Wicked, or Water for Elephants. Mmmn, I love decisions as easy as these. :thumbsup2

PhotobearSam, let me know how you like the Bourne series. I loooooved the movies, and been thinking of picking up the books.

I couldn't get past the first 10 pages of this one. It was just a bunch of chatter about kids and a play. Please tell me when it picks up. Everyone who has read this book loves it, but I can't seem to get past the first chapter.

Help!

Oh it does, I felt the same way as you. I would leave it alone, and come back to it over and over. Finally all of a sudden it just became this book I couldn't put down, really towards the middle. Some of the best writing I have read in years. Makes me wonder about all the other books I've "left" that maybe I should revisit and give them another shot.

Okay, did anyone like Wicked? I started it last night, and now I found that thread where almost everyone trashed it. Makes me almost want to skip it.

Will do...

I will be reading less and less as the months go by and I open our summer business again. Reading slips low on my to do list when I am working 12 to 15 hours a day...

I hope to at least be able to finish a few between now and June 1st. Then I won't have much time till October.

It was very political and I didn't find I had much sympathy for Elphaba so I have to say that no, I didn't like it. I finished it and I suppose I'm glad I read it but I wouldn't pick up the sequel that's for sure. I did love the musical though! :)

Nope. I tried reading it at least three times and just kept putting it down. Never made it more than halfway through. All of his stuff is political like that, but I was able to make it through Mirror, Mirror. Confessions of a Wicked Stepsister wa a no-go too. All of them ended up on my paperbackswap.com bookshelf for trading.

:flower3:

I am now reading The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry. I finished reading Prince Caspian last week, but am taking a break from Narnia while I read this, afterwards, I'll probably read the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, then Silver Chair, then the Last Battle.

After that I'll need some suggestions.

I am also reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, a Newbery Award book, my son just read this, and I try to read some of the books he reads for fun, (not classwork) so we can have discussions on them. This book is very odd.....He just read the Hot Zone as wel, and I just couldn't get into it so he just did the discussing part, lol.

I really enjoyed The Giver and the two sequels, as well. DD read it in 6th grade and passed it on to me because she liked it so much.

Right now I'm reading The Mayflower by Nathanial Philbrick about the Pilgrims and Plymouth Plantation. It's very interesting.

Last week I read Nevada Barr's new book A Winter Study which was set at Isle Royale. And I also read The Spellman Curse by Lisa Lutz which was GREAT--very funny.

I thought of another book I want to read Chocolat, and it's new sequel book, though I forget what it's called.

I loved Chocolat. Actually, I love almost all of Joanne Harris's books. But I got really confused when I saw the new sequel. I bought a book with the same description but a different name last summer in England. The book I have is called The Lollipop Shoes and the book available now in the U.S is called The Girl with No Shadow. I was really excited that she had a new book out but really disappointed when I realized I'd already read it. :lmao:

Thank you, I read a blurb about it in a magazine, but all I could remember is that it was the sequel to Chocolat.

Is the book as good as the movie. I'm weird, and I usually find the movies to be better then the books, most noticeably the Princess Diaries, and recently Stardust, I was so bored with the ending.

Did you read A Thousand Splendid Suns as well? I've heard it was even better.

Have fun in WDW, my book friend! :)
I did not read A Thousand Splendid Suns yet. Waiting until it comes out in paperback (too cheap to buy a hardcover!!!)

& thanks - I'm in WDW right now at OKW - it's a little chilly, so we're having some down time & ordering pizza in our unit tonight to watch AI!!!

Oh you guys. *sigh* The Kite Runner. *sigh* This book, no kidding, changed my life. I'm on my way to the bookstore this morning to pick up A Thousand Splendid Suns. This book moved me in ways I can't explain. It gave me a whole new perspective.

Anyone else experience this after reading it?
Yes, totally felt the same way. I was very moved by this book.

Actually, no, not at all. I think I totally didn't 'get' something about the Kite Runner because I didn't care for it at all. I really felt like it was waste of a read but I must be missing something about it since sooo many people say it was so good! I would love to hear more about how it's been affecting you and moving you. I want to share the perspective too! :D
A friend of mine read it twice & said she loved it the 2nd time, much more than the first. In fact, said she didn't care for it the first time she read it, but after hearing so many people continue to give it rave reviews, gave it another shot.

Also, thank you to the poster that suggested These Is My Words. OMG - I loved this book. I totally fell in love with the character of Sarah. This book could have been 1000 pages & I think I would have loved the entire thing & never wanted it to end.
