What are you getting your TWEEN DD for Christmas?

It's been difficult because I have a tomboy who is 12 and doesn't need anything. I've decided on a charm bracelet. She mentioned once that she'd like one. I'm going to get a nice one from a local jewelry store. Also a book about girls' sports and some small things.

DD will be 11 on Dec 4, so she will be getting things for Christmas and her birthday. So far, she has 3 new TKD tees and a hoodie, and a Marvel Wii U game. I hope to get her an iPad mini on Thanksgiving Day, and really hoping to find the LotR Lego set she wants. It is $200, but I will only get it if I can get some sort of deal. She also has a lot of movies on her list, and she will be getting a new tv and wi-if blu-ray player for Christmas. :goodvibes

ETA:Oh! The kids will also be getting an upright bag for TKD training. :goodvibes

Twin 9 year old daughters here (they will be 10 in February). I have one girly girl and one not so girly but not quite a tom boy. Some of the current favorites are Minecraft, Lego Friends, and the Hunger Games. Dolls are a thing of the past. I usually don't but clothing as Christmas gifts unless it is something themed or outside of my normal clothing/shoe price range. Thanks to this thread I will be purchasing the rainbow loom soon.

I've purchased the following so far:

Disney Infinity plus additional figurines (this is more of a family gift)
Lego Friends Dolphin Cruiser and a few smaller sets
Minecraft Lego sets
Minecraft creeper hoodies
Minecraft T shirts
Hunger games T shirts
Nerf Rebelle Crossbow
Arts and craft kits from Michael's (they currently have a coupon for 25% off and sale items are included)
Kingdom Keepers book series
Ipod touch and Ipad mini silicone cases in fun shapes (puppy, monkey, minion)
Itunes gift cards
Digital watches with silicone bands
Alarm clock that projects the time on the ceiling
Mini remote control cars

I keep reading people getting there young kids (like 8- 10) Hunger Games stuff. Do people really let kids that young watch that movie or read the book? I am an adult and I thought the movie was interesting but it was also disturbing. I guess I would let a high school student watch it but even then there would be some discussion first. Am I missing something? Is there another "Hunger Games" people are talking about that is for younger kids???

DD14 and DD10 both love the movie but I don't think 10 is ready to read it. I think the book is way more graphic than the movie. We've had several discussions with them both though. I would probably take it case by case. And no, I don't think there is another Hunger Games, lol.

There is only one Hunger Games. And yes I let my 9 year old daughter read the books and see the movie. Most of her circle of friends have done the same. I read the trilogy and watched the movie before I let her read and watch. For my child, I thought it was appropriate and made for some great discussions. I don't want to highjack this thread with additional thoughts but I did want to answer the question because I mentioned buying hunger games items for my daughters.

Well put! DD10 is on the last book of Harry Potter, she just recently got really into reading and is now above her grade level. If she asks to read it, I just might let her.

There's only one Hunger Games. Now I'm not a parent, but my mom never censored my reading of books. I could hardly watch anything on tv/movies, and I only ended up reading maybe one issue of a magazine she ordered for me because the rest were "inappropriate", but with books I was allowed to read anything. In 5th grade we covered the Holocaust in our advanced reading group and the books we read for that were more disturbing than the Hunger Games, especially because they were true. I think if you think your child can handle it then they should read it. They're great books.

Yeh, I guess it would really depend on the child. There is no way I would let my 8 year old watch that movie. I don't think she has ever even heard of it so that is good! She does like Harry Potter and before she can watch the movies she has to read the books....she is on the 4th book so she has seen 3 movies. I thought HP was nothing compared to Hunger Games. It goes to show how these things affect people (and kids) completely different. I was really disturbed by Hunger Games (but at the same time I thought it was good).

I think it just depends on the child and their maturity level. It's definitely a book to read and discuss. We've read books about the holocaust and discussed those, so I don't really see this as any different. I personally do not care for the movie and don't let them watch it.

What I like about the books is that you get the main character's thoughts and emotions, her feelings and thoughts about the moral and political situation she finds herself in. It really makes you question what you would do in a situation like that, it's not so black and white. Opens up a lot of great opportunities for conversation, so if they want to read the books, I would be open for that. However, without her thoughts, the movie just feels likes another gladiator movie to me with a love triangle thrown in. In the future, after we have read and discussed the books, they can watch the movies if they want.

If you have a daughter interested, I'd at least check the books out myself, before dismissing them completely. I was very against them until I actually read them. The whole premise just sounded so wrong, but if a kid wants to read or see something they will. Especially, with how popular this is. I'd rather we read and watch the movie at home then them watch it secretly at a friends house.

For anyone interested in Hunger Games, I noticed a huge section at Toys R Us the other day.

I am having a hard time buying for my DD11. She is not into dolls, make-up, nail polish, clothing, hair stuff.......so it is always a challenge to shop for her. She loves reading and playing board games....so I bought her the first 2 books in The Kingdom Keepers series plus a couple of board games. She loves mysteries and spy stuff......so I bought her a crime scene kit that I think she will love. I am also thinking about buying her a nice microscope and some prepared slides as I think this is something educational that she would enjoy.
