What are skunks and racoons?

To demonstrate that I too, am capable of starting a light hearted post, I pose the question; If coyotes, wolves belong to the canine family, I would assume that would include foxes. Bears I have heard are more closely related to pigs. Rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks are obviously rodents. Would that include beavers? I have a question, what are skunks most like? Also raccoons? Would racoons be in the bear family?

We had a skunk as a pet growing up. They had removed her "spraying gland" (don't know what it really is called). She was the sweetest thing! Her name was April and when we got her she fit in the palms of our hand. She ate cat food and lettuce was her favorite snack. She and our dog (an Irish setter) used to play together too. It was real funny because when she got mad she would raise her tail and do her little spraying dance. Of course nothing came out, but it was a riot to watch!

I could tell you all kinds of funny stories about her....

So anyways, yes, they do make good pets

his name was Pepe le peu.......he was a good skunk and would use a litter box and all......

but now Skunks and Racoons are the number one carrier of Rabies....so stay away.....

Weren't they so much fun! They really make cool pets.

I know you can still get them. There are some who breed them to be household pets. I'd love to get another one!

What a great name for a skunk, April. Where did you keep her? Did she have the run of the house or live in a cage? Also, did your dog know what it meant when she raised her tail?

the northern raccon is a member of the PROCYONIDAE family. Species: PROCYON LOTOR
Yes, their relatives include 20 species. Among them are the coatis, ringtails, kinkajous, and olingos all found in the forests of america. The exception is the Lesser Panda of Asia" sometimes included with the Giant Panda in the 2 member family: AILURIDAE."

Skunks are members of the MUSTELIDAE family. Their relatives include: the weasal, polecat, mink, ermine, ferret, badger and otter and the wolverine.

We call this child FROGIRL. Frogs and penguins are among her favorite animals.
She is happy because she just contributed to the DIS!

We named her April because skunks tend to give birth in April. most of the time she was kept in a cage in the house but she got a lot of free time too! The dog did know to back off when she raised her tail because even tho her spraying gland was removed the first few times she tried to spray it did emit a faint odor. The dog seemed to have some instinct as to waht that smell was! LOL
She was a blast!

When she'd go to spray she'd raise her tail, arch her back and jump around backwards...it was the funniest thing to watch!
