What are my options with my DVC points if I'm late checking in?

Just doing some pre-planning thinking.

We're due to check into the OKWest next Sunday using borrowed points.

If, and I'm thinking way ahead, something like what happened this week-ends happens nextweek-end and most flights into out of Orlando are cancelled and I miss the first day or two of my OKWest trip, what are my options as far as the points go?

Just trying to be prepared.

My first line plan is to watch the weather and if it looks like Tropical Storm #4 or 5 are going to be a problem is to get out early and get a room somewhere before my OKWest checkin.

My second plan is to plan a quick trip before my plan year is over if they let me keep those points

My third plan is to cry a lot if they are lost. :lol

If your trip will be delayed due to weather (or other conditions beyond your direct control) be sure to contact the resort and/or MS and let them know. They are sometimes able to make adjustments for you. You may want to consider the travel protection where you would be reimbursed for points lost. If you try to cancel after the reservation actually starts, the points will have been already devoted to the reservation and can't be simply placed in the Holding account.

Basically, the points are committed in total on the first day of the reservation. If you arrive late, you will still have a room saved.

If you meet with challenges like this weekend, be sure to allow DVC to assist with your points- they are pretty good about adjusting things on a case-by-case basis.

Good luck!

I may be facing this same issue tomorrow. We fly from Logan/Boston in the am just when what's left of Charley appears here. I called MS on Friday and was told to make sure I keep the front desk up to date on my status and then call them on Monday. I thought about the travel insurance for the points, but you don't get the points back only a "monetary" settlement. I guess it would be better than nothing.

Cora, I'm leaving from Bradley in Connecticut at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. We're going to be fine! I'm all packed and ready to go.

I'll be at Saratoga Springs...home sweet home! Catch ya there! ;)

I hope to be waiting for you by the pool...

Cora and Diva -- two lucky ladies heading to WDW!! Have a great trip. Just a reminder to check with your airlines about any changes. I just saw someone posted on the "Charley" thread that the Southwest terminal at MCO was damaged and they have suspended flights. I'm sure other airlines may have delays and I would be prepared for crowds at the airport.

I agree. This is from Southwest.com:

Southwest Airlines Update on Hurricane Charley Southwest Airlines Update on Hurricane Charley
Updated: August 14, 2004 - 2:30PM CT
Orlando, FL (MCO)
As of 1:30 p.m. CT, August 14, due to amount of water entering the gate facilities from the ceiling at the Orlando International Airport, Southwest Airlines has discontinued all flight operations to/from Orlando for Saturday, August 14. We are working with the Orlando Airport Authority to repair the weather-related facilities damage in order to minimize the extent of this inconvenience, and we are anticipating resuming flight service sometime on Sunday, August 15.

So it sounds like anyone flying to Orlando should check with the airline first! (Ask about flying into Tampa, about 1.5 hours away if MCO is closed.)

Check with the airlines. It has been announced today that the airport is open and planes are flying in/out.

Just an FYI on the travel insurance. It only reimburses you $5/point. I don't understand why. For that amount you could not even book your room through CRO paying the cash you received.
