What are developer points?

I have seen this referenced several times. Can someone enlighten me? :confused3

Developer points are incentive points offered to DVC buyers. They are called "developer points" because they come from the stock of points owned by DVD - Disney Vacation Development. The most recent incentive including developer points was for a set of "free" points at SSR equal to the number of points purchased on a contract. In our case, we bought 280 points at Bay Lake Tower and so we got 280 points to use at SSR.

These points are non-transferable, not bankable and must be used by October 3, 2009. I believe they're also good at DL hotels and can be traded into RCI for travel up to 24 months from purchase...not sure on the exact details on that.

Thanks for the reply. I am wading through all the info. out there trying to figure out if I should buy DVC at VGC. :surfweb: I was also curious if there are added incentives on purchasing when we are staying at DL later this month or if there are no incentives to buying when you are actually on site.

When people purchased new DVC contracts or added on at one of the current new resorts they received, as an incentive, developer points. These developer points came with certain restrictions. One of them being they expire around Oct.3rd (I think). Others may have more details.

In general, the incentives are the same whether you by at a distance or on site. However, incentives can vary from WDW to DL to DCL to Doorway to Dreams - each sometimes/often offers slightly different deals. DL sometimes offers vouchers for annual passes - not sure if they're doing that now or not. Also, there are often special incentives for buying during special events, but those aren't held very frequently.

I would say if you're up to date on all the current incentives, have a referral for additional $$point discount, know what you want, then I would purchase there and get it all done in one shot (maybe get fastpasses for you & your family and ask about any other perks for purchasing on site). If you're purchase will be for VGC, then you may save a couple bucks (more or less $10 per contract signature) on not having to get the Deed of Trust notarized. We had 5 contracts (broke up our 330pt purchase, 160, 50, 50, 30, 40) and paid $50 to get them notarized. It would have been $100, but a co-worker of a friend gave us a discount. Just a thought.
