I vote for never! After seeing/hearing stories of infection, pain, and scarring from friends who had it done when I was a teen, there is no way I'd ever let a daughter of mine get it done. Thank goodness I have boys!
I agree. I was this close to getting mine done about 15 years ago when they first started getting popular. Then I heard the stories. My friend's sister got a terrible chemical burn just trying to keep hers clean. Another friend didn't get hers pierced deep enough, and her body rejected it & pushed it back out. Plus, it takes longer to heal than pretty much anywhere else you could pierce. I think I'll go with a tattoo instead.
So my thought is, when you're 18 and old enough to make that decision for yourself.
My DD actually got hers when she was 13.. she is 16 going on 17 now and her belly button did get infected once when she wasnt cleaning it properly but put medicine on it and it cleared up.. she doesnt flaunt it...
I pick my battles and this just wasnt one that I thought was a big deal.. It seemed like 3 yrs ago alot more girls did it, at least it seemed so in the area we live, then that do nowadays..
She recently wanted her nose pierced with a small stud and I said no.. I dont know why I thought that was a big deal but she said ok and that was that..
My 16yo dd has been asking for one for about a year off and on with it increasing lately.
One of her good friends got one about a month ago- and my dd thought I'd take her since her friend got one.
I have explained to the kids- that they can get whatever piercings or tattoos they want- after they are paying for their own insurance
I have permitted my 16yo to get a second ear peircing but told her never to get the cartlidge pierced- scars worse- but I made her wait until she was 15- for that and told her she had to write a letter explaining to herself all the reasons she wanted the second piercing so I wouldn't later have to deal with the "why did you let me do that?"
I have also strongly suggested that they think long and hard about any other piercings- definitely affects some jobs- and as a nurse who has seen lots of naked old people- tattoos may look cool on a young fit body but lose some of their appeal as the skin starts sagging with age...
I was in the age of one double pierced ear- from the 80's- and did mine myself-
But to answer the op question- my dd was told when she could get them herself... She did ask my 20yo son to take her to get her bellybutton pierced- he said, "no, I like living at home and have no desire to fend for myself at this time." lol
I actually like them alot, and wish I had the shape for one. To me 15 is fine. I like tattoos and I like peircings. Its all about picking your battles. Things could be alot worse. Just the fact that she wanted to go shopping with you is good.
I think 15 is fine - it's not permanent and there are so many worse things she could be doing. The majority of girls her age have them, its honestly as common as ear piercings. Quite honestly I think I'd rather see a girl with this done than their nose or tongue... at least you're not going to see it daily. I had mine done my senior year of college at 22, this was when it was just beginning really... It was either a tattoo or the piercing and I chose the one that I could change my mind about. I still have the piercing and at 34 am beginning to consider taking it out for good. Some people will look at your step daughter differently but these are normally the same people that base their opinions on how someone looks. I'm not trying to offend anyone but I'm trying to raise my children to respect others and to not base opinions on looks alone. Just as an example, DS7 asked if he could get a green mohawke... I'm not crazy about it but he's a great kid who makes straight A's and rarely ever gets in trouble at school (he can be a talker ) I told him he could do it after school is out for summer ... I can only imagine what the principal of his school would say if he showed up looking like a punk rocker
