What age do kids stop wearing light up shoes?

When I read this post this am I asked my ds8 (going into 3rd grade) if he would wear light-up shoes. He said "absolutely not, those are for babies". He loved them when he was little but I think the last pair he was in 1st grade and he tore them up trying to get the battery out so they wouldn't light up. I asked him if anyone had light up shoes last year and he said no. If your son wants them and he doesn't care that he might get made fun of, buy him the shoes. I got my kids both Stride Rite shoes for $14.99 and $19.99 yesterday.

Not every kids laughs. My son wore them and most of the kids wished their feet could still fit into them. The sketchers that she is describing don't look like baby shoes.

It really depends on the child - a few of my cousin's children (ages 5 - 8) still wear them last time I visited - but then my friends grandchildren (yea i'm old smiles) don't like them. I really have no preference though ...

It's funny because when the light up shoes first came out (early 90s?), they were for teenagers and early 20s. Now, it seems only toddlers and very young children wear them.

This thread makes me sad. :( I can't believe that kids would make someone feel bad for wearing light up shoes, especially kids so young!

My daughter just started 2nd grade. I asked her if any of her friends had light up shoes and she said some did. She said no one makes fun of them at all. Not sure if it's a maturity level, a regional thing, or what. :confused3 I'd have no issues at all buying my daughters (1st & 2nd grade) light up shoes if that was what they wanted.

I wouldn't let my 2nd grader wear light up sneakers. I actually won't let my DD wear light up shoes and she is going into Kindergarten.

Why? Is it because of their age or just because you don't like the light up shoes?

I always let my boys pick what they wanted. If he's a confident kid, he can wear whatever he wants.

My 14 year old is currently sporting these eye-melting things (yes, that is one pair! They're mismatched looking:)

Those look like Punky Brewster's shoes. :)

Well, I teach 4th grade in central Texas and I had kids wear light up shoes last year. Thinking about it I would say it was more girls than boys but out of the 66 kids I would say that about 10 had shoes that lit up.

I would say that if he likes them let him wear them. It is so sad when parents don't let their kids enjoy being a kid.

I think this is the perfect opportunity to teach a child to be an individual and to not worry about what other kids think. He should be able to wear whatever shoe he likes. :thumbsup2

Skechers are only going to make shoes that make them money so if they keep making light up shoes to fit a 2nd grader then obvioulsy there are other children wearing them. If my 2nd grader picked them out, I would be fine w/ it.

My first grader wants these too. And at first I was kind of like um you sure. but hey if he likes them- then I'll let him have them.
For crying out loud I wear crocs! who am I to judge?

I am all for letting your children express themselves how they want to and becoming an individual. (I have let both of my sons have mohawks at one point or another) That being said I also teach my kids that other kids can be BRUTAL. Its true. They dont have a filter really and speak whats on their minds and sometimes (a lot of times) it can hurt other kid's feelings. If he is confident enough to stand up to anyone who may tease him and say "I am wearing these shoes because I like them and I dont care what anyone has to say about it" then your DH has no reason to worry about him being picked on.

Well those are DC's but I can't seem to find them anywhere online(I am assuming they are Men's skater shoes since that's what most of the DC's I know are)

I am also a teacher and every year there are some kids in 4th grade that get light-up shoes. No one laughs or makes fun of them. I think 2nd grade is still fine for light-up shoes. Go into any elementary school and you'll see them on kids of all ages. They aren't as popular as they once were though, probably because the novelty of them has worn off, just like the Heely's. My kids loved their Heely's when no one else had them (about 5 years ago), but once most other kids started wearing them, my kids didn't want them any more.

I say let him be a kid. I seriously doubt he'll get teased at his age, unless he has other issues that make him a "bully magnet."

Personally, I don't like light-up shoes on very young kids. I work in a preschool class and the kids are very distracted by things that light up. They'll sit at circle time and bang their feet on the ground to see their shoes light up and before you know it, every other kid is watching, too. We always ask our parents not to send their kids in clothes or shoes that light up or make noise (we've had several come in shirts that play music!). For older kids, light up shoes are probably OK as long as the kids aren't distracted by them.

Those are DC sneakers. I am guessing a 14 yr old boy would be in adult sneakers at that age so you DD would be just fine in those.
