What age do kids stop wearing light up shoes?

When their parents stop buying them. My DD is going to 2nd grade this year. Some of the boys that she goes to school will wear these on the first day most will not.

as I tell my DD - the only flavor everyone likes is plain old vanilla. Who wants to be plain old vanilla?

My DS is going into second grade and has fallen in love with a pair of shoes from sketches that light up like police cars. My DH swears that he is to old for them and says kids in second grade don't wear light up shoes. He's worried that he will get made fun of. I have to admit I've not paid to much attention to the kids feet when I am at school! Any advice?

My rising 2nd and 4th grader have these Sketchers - cooler than your average light up shoes.

Funny reading this because today i went out to buy my son who is 9 going into 4th grade new sneakers for school. He only wants Sketchers' w/Velcro - he can tie and i kept saying he should buy laces, etc the kids will make fun of him and he said i don't care what they say and i got him Velcro - he is right - i think we as parents worry more!

i just apologized to my son - told him i should not have questioned him - if thats what he wants then thats what he should get!

I haven't read through the entire thread - but I would say if he wants them and you think they are "good" shoes (as in, will hold up, in budget, etc.), why not? I personally think kids should go with their own individual styles, within reasonable limits - be happy with what YOU like, not what everyone else WANTS you to like, KWIM?

That said, 2nd grade was a very transitional year for my DD - at the beginning of the year, she would wear anything I bought her but by the end of the year she was becoming quite the fashionista and snubbed some of my choices. Kids sort of figure this stuff out on their own eventually.

I guess it depends on where people live. In my neighborhood, kids started getting teased for their clothes and shoes in kindergarten. My friend's daughter refused to wear her Dora sandals because all the other little girls made fun of her. It's sad, I know, but I wouldn't set my kids up for ridicule.

And when your friend's DD gets to middle school or high school, Dora will be cool again. :cool1: Last year 13 yr old DD wanted everything with Elmo on it and a friend of hers (same age) had a Dora lunchbox.

I think if your son like them let him wear them, I really wouldn't worry about it. My son just turned 8 (he is going into 3rd grade) and we went sneaker shopping yesterday, he fell in love with a pair of Sketchers but they didn't have his size so I suggested a different pair that lit up. They were dark blue and black with a little white on them but, when I suggested them he looked at me like I had 2 freakin' heads. I told him I thought they were cool and his response was "yeah, NO!" Oh, well I thought they were cool. Anyway, we are going to look in another store for the orginial ones he wanted.

2nd grade is TOO old for light up shoes - of course, he could always wear them just at home.

My son just got the shoes OP referred too. But he is 4 and will be in preschool. I am not sure how we(my son or I) would feel if he was going into 2nd grade. My DD is going into 2nd grade and has no desire for light up or character shoes.
