What About Testing Positive Before Returning?

The hotel quarantine requirement in Canada has been lifted. I'm going to Florida next week, flying from Toronto-Ft Lauderdale. I'll get an antigen test for $125 which is accepted to board the plane, and pay for another one (PCR) before I fly back to Toronto. It seems that everyone who pays for tests at private clinics, literally never test positive. My brother has gone to florida three times during this pandemic & they constantly test negative. I also went to Disney in January for 10 days & same story for me.

So, I've been thinking more and more about this thread, and I really don't see how the travel industry can recover until/unless the testing requirements are dropped, at least for fully vaccinated travelers. How many of us can afford to change flights/hotels 3 days before departure if testing positive before leaving? Or the extra 14 days of accommodations/flight changes on the way home?

These are early days when they really don’t want us travelling anyway. It won’t stay like this and I imagine testing will get easier and cheaper to get or restrictions for fully vaccinated people will loosen. But while the USA continues to have lower vaccination rates and high variant cases I imagine this will remain . I think this is a necessary evil right now but won’t last forever.

You're totally right - I just really hope "early days" are over before my flight credits expire :P

I'm really hoping that the testing requirement gets dropped, when they really open up travel, I don't think that there is the capacity of places that do the testing to keep up! Let the vaccinated people be exempt from testing if you are asymptomatic of course. I understand keeping the testing for the unvaccinated.

Yeah well it’s really a minute by minute thing over here whether I feel like it’s all temporary and we’re moving forward or weeping that this going to last forever and how completely over it all I am . So take me with a grain of salt :rotfl:

I am really crossing my fingers that soon the testing negative to get onto a plane home is removed. At this point, it seems like it is kind of like trying to herd cats. The virus is alllll around us. No matter how careful you think you are being, you can still pick up the virus anywhere.

On one hand, totally understand it....but the other part of me is wondering what steps can be taken so that we start to move forward in a world where covid exists and will never really go away. At what point are governments, all the business sectors, healthcare sector, and the general public going to be comfortable with restrictions being lifted?

Somedays I just want to hole up at home with anxiety because case counts are rising again. Then other days, I tell myself, you can't keep living in fear of things...or else you will miss out on life. We are NEVER guaranteed tomorrow. I'm still a flip-flopper. I can relate and see both sides of the card on this. We take risks every single day from the moment we get out of our bed in the morning.

I can see your point. The restrictions make sense to control the spread, but it seems like we're going back and forth because the one thing that we need to do is something that's too difficult to convince everyone to do.

So I was really glad to hear about the Vaccine Passport/Certificate being implemented this fall. I think it would only help to push our progress forward. I do like the fact that they said each province can also use it for their own use. So, it become easier if it's nationwide.

At this point, I'm concerned about visiting Quebec (since they'll have a passport next month) and not be able to provide one if needed since I don't live there. It would be nice not to worry about travelling within our own country.

I am very happy with needing a vaccine passport - for traveling purposes. We all need vaccinations to get into different countries, and this is no different. Having this " passport " will just make it easier to travel. I said to dh as soon as they were talking about the possibility of a vaccine, that we would need some sort of documentation about having this to travel.

I agree about restrictions to control the spread. As an Albertan - in the wild west of Covid - we will still do what we can to minimize the spread. Sigh....it's hard. That's all I'm going to say. It will be an interesting 6-8 weeks here :sad2:

I felt completely overwhelmed with worry when MB dropped most capacity limits and the mask mandate. After a couple of days, I hit something of a breaking point and thought "F this". We're both fully vaccinated, none of our close contacts are children or immunocompromised, so we're going to wear our masks and go about our business. I booked VIP theatre tickets for Jungle Cruise. I had a cocktail the size of my head, and we loved the movie :P

Anywho - before we get shut down for veering into opinion territory, I wanted to say this chat has been nice, and I appreciate my fellow DISers on the Canadian board 🤗

Were booked to visit Quebec in October. Both my hubby and I are vaccinated but the kids are not, obviously. Wonder if thatll mess up our plans at all.

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker on the Dis Boards but first time commenting as I believe I have hopefully found a potential option for us Canadians worrying about testing positive while at WDW.

Tugo (The same insurance provider that WestJet partnered with to offer COVID insurance on trips before Oct. 31) has an Covid-19 unvaccinated add-on option for their medical travel plan that covers unplanned quarantining in the event someone in your party tests positive while away.

I emailed their general insurance inbox and was told that even though my SO and I are fully vaccinated we are still eligible to add this coverage if we were to purchase travel insurance and would be given $150 per person for up to 14 days if quarantining was required.

I think we will likely buy this coverage for our upcoming trip in November to have complete freedom of mind while in WDW as the last thing we want is to be constantly panicked about potentially being stranded post vacation. I know we have plenty of well-traveled people in these boards so I was wondering if anyone has experience with Tugo travel policies and if this is a smart option for us in order to have all of our bases covered before fully committing to this trip.

I am right there with you on flip flopping. I want to figure out how to start doing things without feeling panicked.

I am leaving tomorrow, we have flights Westjet and I printed the Tugo policy. We are eligible without any additional steps or payment because of the flights we purchased. It's very good peace of mind.

The peace of mind for us is absolutely key, the last thing I want to be thinking about while I ride Space Mountain is the possibility of being stranded post trip. Which is why I have no problem paying the extra money for the coverage as we won't be eligible for the complementary coverage through WestJet as we leave early November. I just have very little experience with travel insurance companies/policies as we have never had to worry about traveling in a "post" pandemic world :D.

Make sure you read the fine print on this. My insurance broker was going to sell me the Tugo policy but when they contacted Tugo directly to confirm my policy they told her that the quarantine portion is NOT covered as long as Canada is at a Level 3 or 4 travel advisory. The emergency medical is covered, but not the quarantine portion, which was the coverage I was specifically looking for.

Edited to add this copied and pasted note in Togo's list of exclusions. It's in the very fine print and so easy to miss unfortunately!

  1. An official travel advisory issued by the Canadian government stating to “avoid all travel” regarding the country, region or city of yourdestination, before the date you travel to that destination (including any stopovers, layovers or any other destinations you are transiting through), unless as specified under Trip Interruption Insurance.

Thank you for that. In case anyone is looking, here are some links.

The USA has Canada at a level "2" right now:
https://travel.state.gov/content/tr.../traveladvisories/canada-travel-advisory.html
Canada doesn't seem to use numeric levels, instead stating "avoid non-essential travel outside Canada" and "Take normal security precautions" for the United States in particular:
https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/united-states

to follow-up on the above post about travel insurance and travel advisories there's another one we saw hiding last trip. It said the entire policy was essentially null and void if you booked the trip while the advisory was in effect. I can't find the direct link right now but it certainly was one of our deciding factors to waiting until 2023.
