What about cell phones?

I just found out.... Everything has to be checked in with luggage.... thank god for security codes...

Thats not true.
You can still have your cell phones and other electronic equipment with you. The only restrictions for domestic travel is no liquids/gels allowed past security. plus if you buy a drink, you have to finish it before getting on the plane. The only exceptions are medical items with prescriptions, baby formula/milk and juice if you have a baby with you.

All other items have to be checked in your baggage.

Nebsky is correct.

There are electronics restrictions in England, but not here in the U.S.

I was checking to see if dh and my cell phone have locks on them and his does have a phone lock and mine has a pin code.... because I was going to put them in my checked luggage... I guess now I don't have too...

If you would like to see your cell phone at your destination don't put it in your checked luggage....

If they do bring electronic restrictions here that will be a "death" knell for travel. Not sure what most of us business travelers will do, but there is NO way I am giving the TSA and baggage handlers the opportunity to rumage around and find my computer, camera, cell phone etc UNLESS and UNTIL the airlines agree to be responsible for replacing the lost/stolen items.

Cell Phone Locks... only keep honest people from "borrowing" your phone to make a call. They do not completely LOCK the phone.

My younger sister Locked her phone... only to Forget what her passcode was set to. She thought she was going to be in big trouble considering her phone was now useless and Mom just bought it for her. I saved the day ** thats what big sisters do**

There is a code, rather a sequence of codes (that cellular companies are unwilling to easily give out, guess they make more money if you just buy a new phone and extend your contract) that will unlock even the LOCKED phone.

One thing you might do is to take out the SIM Chip that’s inside your phone (usually its under the battery and has a little compartment door), that way if the phone gets stolen they only have a phone and not access to your Cel Phone account, then put the SIM Chip in your wallet or purse and take it with you on the plane.

ztbz - thanks that's good to know...

I agree with CarolA - for those of us who travel for business or even pleasure I can't imagine putting my laptop in my luggage. This should get interesting....

It better not get to the point where I have to check my laptop, camera, treo, gps, etc... I use all these electronics on business all the time! TSA has already destroyed one of my collegues laptop and that was before all of this...

That will work with some carriers, like Cingular and T-Mobile, but not others, like Verizon. Most Verizon phones do not have SIM cards.

Basically on flights to and from the UK *ONLY* you can carry NOTHING aboard except your travel documents. Everything must go in checked luggage.

Changes will not be the death knell to air travel. We will all have to learn how to adapt to the new rules. Just like we did after 9/11. After some time the rules will be clarified and eventually relaxed (as they did after 9/11).

What the interesting thought is....

If cell phones were banned on 09/11/01 we might not have a whitehouse or capitol building.

Banning cell phones reduces security.

Help me here. How did a cell phone help the terrorists MISS the White House and the Capital.
One very gutsy flight crew ditched the plane in PA.
One very stupid terrorist missed the Capital and White House, but, unfortunately hit the Pentagon.

I do agree that banning cell phones, which they have not done yet in the US, would reduce security.

The passengers with cell phones found out what was happening - i.e., that planes were flown into the WTC and that their plane was also likely intended to be used as a weapon.

Without that knowledge, the passengers and flight crew would likely have done nothing - the training prior to 9/11 was to let hijackers do what they do and not try to stop them. IMHO, it is quite possible that without those cell phones, the plane aiming for the Capital/White House might very well have made it.

Best wishes -

Interesting concept since cell phones don't work above 1000 ft. in an airplane. I believe they used the in plane airphones that are currently being removed from many aircraft since no one uses them.

I thought they used personal cell phones.

Now nearly all cell phones are digital and are limited to locking onto signals within their own network. I believe the older analog phones could work in a plane since there was no such restriction. In 2001 there would have been many more phones with the analog capability.

Well I have heard cell phones ringing on planes at 30,000 feet so I think they work. (You should see the FA's jump all over the offending passenger LOL!)

On 9/11 I am pretty sure they did use thier personal cell phones. As a matter of fact I think they even received calls.

Wow. Defying the laws of physics, I guess. A cell phone at 30,000 feet. Truly amazing. I'll be sure to tell our corporate aviation department about these, since they would LOVE to have cell phones that work in the cabin of our corporate aircraft.
