Having worked in a bookstore for many years I was incredibly spoiled with the discount. I have to admit that even before that if I wanted a book, usually a new release hardback, I bought it. Back then you passed them around though. I don’t think there was a book I owned that wasn’t read by at least five people. When I went mostly Kindle I donated a couple thousand dollars worth of hardbacks. I couldn’t even begin to estimate how much in paperbacks.
As to the original question: upwards of $50-$60 for photography specific books.
I am kind of voracious when it comes to reading so I use the library a lot combined with my own collection that was mostly purchased through charity used book sales. I have paid full retail in order to have autographed and inscribed copies from authors. I also will buy brand new copies of Disney books or sometimes a bit for a Disney book that is used but rare/out of print.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaah we will not even discuss how much I would have actually spent on books had I not worked at a bookstore long enough to receive a 30% discount, hahaha...
Also for years my mom and I subscribed to a number of those warehouse books clearance places for access to sales like, $300 books for $10. One only has to use a small amount of imagination to think about how many art and history books that could result in...
My first husband collected (still does) rare/first run occult books and HP Lovecraft/Poe kinda works. As he had everything he ever wanted all the time, I'd happily pay hundreds for something awesome for a birthday or Christmas. He spent a lot more money on his collection, but he certainly had it and he didn't golf, so I never had an issue with it. I actually really enjoyed the thrill of finding him something I knew he'd love. I don't like "stuff" despite reading about 100 books a year on Kindle, but if I could deal with collecting...I'd collect a specific type of books and vinyl records.
Get your $10 book, if it takes you 4 hours to read that's a sight cheaper than a movie per hour. I like to consider entertainment dollars in those terms. Maybe that'll make you feel better @tinkerbellandeeyor?
Also, you might look into a Kindle Unlimited account depending on what you're into. It saves me a TON of money as I read lots of bad sci fi that's included. The value definitely depends on what you read and how much of course. There are certainly still books I have to buy, but its a great value for me.

I do love my Kindle it was bought for me as a gift - but I still love real books - some friends use theirs on holiday but I'm too worried about losing it so I still take cheap paperbacks!
