In the 70s we were such a dichotomy -- we were on the tail end of the hippie generation and were into everything natural. I played Bassoon in Symphonic Band & also in a local community orchestra.

Played Clarinet in marching band.

High School band was my main social outlet & I loved every minute of it. All of my friends & I used to play in Solo's & Ensemble's Contest run by the FBMA. Band contests & All-State Band my senior year was really fun also.

We did not have the plethora of marching festivals then as today, so we only did one marching contest per year.

I played in the Symphonic Band at the University of Florida for 2 years It was very "cliquie-ish" (music majors looking down on the non-majors), & not as enjoyable, although every spring break we would do a 7 day road trip & perform at high schools all over the state.

Don't play any more. In fact, if anyone is looking to purchase a bassoon, PM me.

My kids are not musically inclined, although my DD is in the field guard for her HS marching band & also does winterguard in the 2nd 1/2 of the year.

It was 1982-83 and we had to wear our hair pulled back but we were allowed to have the big teased and sprayed bangs.
Basketball season was Competition Season for us.

Gotta answer this for DS. Although I was only in high school band 1 year (just long enough to learn I wasn't meeting all kinds of boys-the only reason I'd joined), DS was in all 4 years. He played the trumpet, and still does. Band was an excellent experience for him -he prided himself on being "band geek of the year" one year, section leader 2 years. He's majoring in Jazz Studies at University of North Texas, so he does still play, about 2 hours a day. Although he's not in marching band, he's been in a jazz lab band every semester and also in the UNT repertore ensemble (he's played in it around Fort Worth/Dallas area a few times). His music is his life! And I'm so proud that one of his goals is to be a performer for WDW.

I wasn't in band and neither was my son. He was in the string orchestra, though, and played string bass.

Yes, I played in the band in high school. I played flute in first the Intermediate Band and then our Concert Band. I went to college part time and they didn't have a band. My band experience was the best experience of my whole high school career. My friends from band are still my friends today. I also learned the alto sax when in last year of high school because for final year we had to learn a second instrument. Unfortunately, I don't play anymore, but I still have my flute! My son is very interested in music and I can see him playing an instrument when he gets to that year in school. He fools around with my portable keyboard whenever he can and is starting to teach himself to play with my old instruction books. Music is a big part of our lives, my Dad is/was a percussionist and played in bands for all his life until his arthritis got too bad to play anymore. He just listens now and tries to help DS.

Yes I was in band.
I played the clarinet in concert band and was in the color guard (flag squad) in marching band
I liked marching band alot more than concert band but had fun with both.
I don't play anymore, actually I gave my clarinet to my niece when whe started band in 6th grade.
My oldest is almost 7, so none of them play an instrument yet, but I hope they all do.
I was not in college band, too competitive and I got interested in other things.

Yep I was in band! Both concert and marching - I played the flute. I loved it! We were MO top 5A band in 1997 and were first place holders at the Greater St. Louis Marching Band competition.

If so, what instrument did you play?
In Symphonic band I played Clarinet. In the local "Y" band I played french horn, trumpet, or flute and in our marching band I was the head drum major. I was also a member of the "Marching Auxilaries Allstar Performance Team" my senior yr and marched/performed at Disney World with the team and did a half time show at the (what was then ) Florida Citrus Bowl.

Was it a good experience for you?
Yes! I loved music and went to college with the intention of becoming a band director, but ended up changing my major to psychology.

Do you still play your instrument?
Not really. I played the flute for our choir back at Xmas and I play sometimes when we have alumni band gatherings.

If you have kids, are/were they in band?
We'll see. I have a 2 yr old and another on the way, but the two yr old LOVES to sing and I am happy to say she has good tone and pitch!


Anyone play in college band?
I went to audition and while there decided to audition for the Auburn Concert Choir and AU Singers. I got in and decided to use sing while in college rather than march.
