We're bringing DoleWhip back...again! COMPLETE: Sanaa and Yachtsman!

We were sad to leave Wilderness Lodge because we had such a magical time there. Whenever we do a split stay, we try to arrange it so we move "up," and the original plan was to move from a Wilderness Lodge standard view to a Boardwalk Inn water view. Well, Wilderness Lodge had to throw a wrench in our plans and give us that darn upgrade. :rotfl: In all seriousness, we had such a great time at Wilderness Lodge, we didn't think Boardwalk could compete.

Sadly, we were right.

We arrived at Boardwalk at around 2 PM to check in. The CM didn't say happy birthday at all (even though it was listed on the reservation), and the CM didn't seem very happy or friendly. That was the first thing that put a slight damper on the stay.

We had called earlier in the week to request a direct view of the water (as opposed to one of the side views), and the CM said it would definitely be possible, especially since we were actually at Boardwalk on the day/night of my mom's birthday. Well, we were given one of the side views, which looks mostly at grass, with some water to the far right (you had to be right next to the window to see water). We were both really sad about it, and that seems to be an issue at all of the Epcot resorts (water view rooms that overlook grass and a little bit of water to the far left or right).

My mom called the front desk and we asked if we could be moved. We really wanted a room that directly faced water, and it's basically why we chose to spend her birthday there. The CM on the phone acted very rude, as if it was impossible, but after some prodding she admitted that there was a room available. She said that the room was a very far walk from the elevator, so she didn't think we'd like that. We said it was fine, since it was a very short stay anyway and we would rather have the view. We were told to wait in the room, and new keys would be brought right up.

About 30 minutes later, a bellman showed up with a luggage rack and keys. He said he was told to take our bags to the other room. We didn't have our bags yet (because we'd just arrived at the first room), and we told that to the person on the phone. Still, the bellman seemed annoyed that he brought the luggage rack all the way there and he didn't have any bags to move. Honestly, nobody at the Boardwalk seemed friendly or happy to help out.

I was expecting a long walk to our new room, since I knew that a longer walk meant a room that was actually facing the boardwalk and lake. Plus, the CM on the phone told us that our new room was a lot further away.

The new room was about 3 doors down, and it also faced grass.

Disheartened and not wanting to deal with Boardwalk's CM's anymore, we accepted the second room. While not what we wanted, the view from this room was at least better than our original room. But I can say we don't plan on booking another water view at Boardwalk (we'd rather book a standard view and be pleasantly surprised, than book a more expensive room and be disappointed), and I wouldn't choose this place for a special occasion.

Anyway, here's the view looking straight:

And right:

IMG_2120.jpg

It was a really good view, without a doubt. But by that point, we were more upset about our interaction with 3 separate CM's than the room itself. While Wilderness Lodge went above and beyond to exceed expectations, Boardwalk appeared to not care at all. Like Narcoossee's earlier in the week, Boardwalk made us feel unwelcome, which should be the opposite intention of any place in the hospitality industry.

I didn't stay in the room for long, because my mom was hungry. For her birthday, I decided to make the trek all the way into France so I could bring her two of her favorite things from the boulangerie.

After buying the goods in France, I brought them (on the tray) all the way back to Boardwalk. Here they are in the room (I couldn't resist taking a bite of one on the way back :rotfl:):

IMG_1945.jpg

The first thing she had was chocolate mousse. This was disappointing to her because it tasted more like pudding than mousse. She wanted a more natural chocolate flavor, and she said this was worse than it was a few years ago.

IMG_1936.jpg

Fortunately, she still enjoyed the napoleon, which is probably her favorite item from Boulangerie Patisserie. Layers of creamy, custardy, and flaky goodness.

IMG_1937.jpg

IMG_1939.jpg

And for me, a ham and cheese tartine. I loved this. It was basically a crusty pizza with a salty flavor from the ham. What a great use of a snack credit. :thumbsup2

While we weren't very impressed with Boardwalk's CM's, that wasn't going to stop us from enjoying the great food options of the Epcot resort area. :goodvibes

Hi there; I got a little behind (my brother was in the hospital for a week), but I am now all caught up. Thank you so much for the continued great reviews. I was so happy to read your review of Raglan Road; we are going for the first time in September and your review has me very excited (love the look of those scallops).

Sorry about your issues with the BWI...I recently read that people have more luck walking downstairs and complaining to the front desk CM instead of calling.

We are planning on the BWI for my b-day in Oct and booked a standard non water view room but requested a king bed in the quiet pool area...if they put us over the parking lot (like they tried to do 3 years ago) I will be bummed. Usually we ask the CM at check in where the room is located...dont really care much about the view unless its of the parking lot :goodvibes

What a great kid you are to get your mom French treats...and a bite for the cause is acceptable :rotfl2:

Wow sorry about all the un-Disney CM's at BWI!

I'm not a fan of Boulangerie. Most of the stuff I've tried there tasted very icky and artificial. Of course, I'm probably too spoiled when it comes to French pastries since I live in France for year. :upsidedow
But how sweet of you to trek all the way over there and bring mom back stuff!:thumbsup2

I hope you enjoy Raglan Road! It definitely has some good items on the menu. :goodvibes

I hope you don't get a parking lot view! There are plenty of non-parking lot standard views at BWI, and if that's what they give you I would definitely ask to be moved. There have to be some CM's who want to be helpful (even if we didn't speak to any of them :rotfl:).

And I had no problem going to/from France to get things for my mom. It's a really short trip. The only thing I felt slightly awkward about was taking the tray. :lmao:

I have to say, I agree with you about Boulangerie for the most part. If I'm looking for something sweet in France, I'd rather get a sugar crêpe (the best crêpe I've had in France was sugar and lemon juice, so I guess Disney's version is close enough :thumbsup2). But that ham and cheese tartine tasted good and not artificial. Plus, I'm always looking for some decent savory snack options. :goodvibes

I am so sorry about your problems with the BWI! Even though we are leaving for our trip on 8/27, I was already looking at that resort for next year's trip over my birthday. :goodvibes After your review of the CMs, I am just not sure I am willing to stay there. I have always wanted to stay at the WL, so perhaps we will do a split stay there :). Love your pix of the Boulangerie. It is a MUST DO for us everytime we go to EPCOT. I agree with your mom regarding the mousse. My dd13 and ds6 love it, but I think it tastes more like "american" pudding vs french mousse with a heavier chocolate taste. One question...is the cream in the napolean more of a bavarian or whipped? I have not ordered one there because it always looks like whipped cream to me. I really like more of a bavarian, and since they put chocolate in the eclair, I only have a few pastries to choose from.

I think the cream is more like a bavarian, since to me it looked yellow and thicker like custard. My mom still loves it.

Hope that helps!

I've never tried anything from Boulangerie Patisserie!! Another few items to add to my "snack spreadsheet"!! That Napoleon looks lovely! Sorry to hear about your experience at BWI, however I am glad to hear that you loved WL so much because I'll be there in 9 short days!

I'm sad you had a bad experience with the Boardwalk CMs. I'm really surprised as we stayed there multiple times before buying DVC there and the friendliness of the staff was one of the reasons we chose BWV.

I think you had an awesome view!:goodvibes

Sorry about the BWI. Hopefully they'll get their acts together before our wedding there in February. A lot of our guests will be staying at BWI as that's where the ceremony and reception will be.

I have to agree you are a great kid for making the trip to France for pastries. Of course, I'd travel far and wide for a pastry, too. :) Love the napoleon. It's one of my faves.

Great reviews so far! I'm sorry that Boardwalk wasnt very friendly, especially on your moms birthday. I'm looking forward to your next reviews and hope that they with a more positive experience :)

Dropping in late to let you know that I am loving your reviews! Your photography is excellent and I appreciate all the detailed, yet balanced, food reviews as well.

We stay at the Boardwalk most of the time on our family trips (with my friends, we tend to do monorail resorts), and have had mixed results. We've had phenomenal service and just mediocre service. I've always said that I liked the CMs at the Beach Club better, but my DH loves the lively atmosphere on the Boardwalk, so that has pretty much become our "home". I always ask for room location details at the front desk at check-in, and have often gotten moved to a much preferable room because of it. I suspect that Nicki's comment about speaking to them in person is a valid one. For some reason, the "anonymous" nature of the telephone seems to give some people the impression that they don't have to be accomodating. :sad2:

My friends and I are heading to the World in October and plans include a Citrico's dinner and my first meal at Raglan Road. Your reviews have me even more excited to get there (if that's possible)!! So, thanks!!!

Thats a shame at the BWI. I had a bad CM experience at AKL last year, thank goodness it was just for one night as we then moved on the GF. I am giving AKL a second chance in a few months and I am hoping for happy, cheerful, accomodating CMs this time around.

Great reviews! I just returned from a surprise trip for my 10th Anniversary that my DH set up. We stayed club level at the beach club and we were NOT impressed. Nobody went out of their way and I felt like we were bothering them. Not the way you want to feel at WDW, club level on our anniversary. We won't return there ever....too many other resorts that make an effort!

looking forward to the rest of your reviews!

My dh and I had a non magical experience with our last trip in march as well. It was our first trip without the kids and we were celebrating our anniversary. When we checked in, the cm did not give us a button or wish us happy anniversary. The entire trip we did not receive a congratulations. I did request that the celebration be added and everything I called Disney they stated that we were doing a celebration. It was quite sad. But we were so excited to be at Disney that we forgot all about it until we came home.

Hope you love WL! And be sure to stop by the patisserie if you like pastries, as it has a really large selection. :goodvibes

I'm glad to hear you've had better experiences with Boardwalk CM's. The Epcot resorts really are a great place to call home, with their awesome pools, location to 2 parks, seaside vibe, and restaurants. Friendly CM's must be the icing on the cake. :)

Sorry about the BWI. Hopefully they'll get their acts together before our wedding there in February. A lot of our guests will be staying at BWI as that's where the ceremony and reception will be.

Congratulations, and hope you have a wonderful wedding at the Boardwalk! Definitely a good location if you plan on sneaking in a few napoleons ;)

The rest of our dining experiences were mostly positive - I'm looking forward to adding them soon. :)

We're at Beach Club now (we did a split stay with the Swan), and I think I agree that Beach Club CM's are better. But I guess every resort has good and bad CM's, considering how mixed the reviews are of every resort. Now that I think about it, the telephone point seems to be quite valid.

Hope you enjoy both Citricos and Raglan Road!

Hope your second chance at AKL goes better - honestly I think messing up twice in a row isn't an easy task.

Wow, sounds like some CM's really need a refresher course. No guest should be treated like a nuisance, especially if they're celebrating a special occasion. Aside from Boardwalk, Narcoossee's had the same effect on us. We dined there frequently, and I defended their food quite actively on the boards. But our last experience negated any previous experience there, and we'd rather go to other restaurants now. In the restaurant and hotel industry, one bad experience is often enough.

It's really sad when you expect something - a special button or even a "happy birthday" from a smiling CM - and nothing at all happens. Especially with Disney's huge "Celebrate!" promotion recently, they're just setting people up to be disappointed if the CM's can't follow through. Sorry that it happened to you.

A few hours after checking into Boardwalk, we were off to have dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse.

IMG_1958.jpg

This restaurant has recently become one of my favorite signature restaurants, and this meal furthered that opinion. We were seated at a window table, and our server, Al, was very friendly and attentive.

Here's the menu (which we were allowed to keep):

IMG_1959.jpg

IMG_1961.jpg

The bread at Yachtsman is always great - I love their soft onion rolls with some roasted garlic! :goodvibes

IMG_1966.jpg

We received an amuse bouche for my mom's birthday - pulled pork with saffron aioli, potato and eggplant. The pork had a nice, soft texture, and I loved the crispy contrast on top.

IMG_1970.jpg

IMG_1971.jpg

My mom chose the cheese plate. Here's a pic and the description.

IMG_1973.jpg

IMG_1968.jpg

I tried the two milder ones on the left (the lamb chopper and the cheddar) and thought they both were great with their respective pairings. My mom loved everything.

My choice was the caesar salad with dressing on the side. Classic flavors, but high quality. The crunchy ciabatta was wonderful with some cheese and dressing on it.

IMG_1974.jpg

For her main course, my mom picked the filet (shown here butterflied and well-done) with cabernet wine sauce on the side and green beans instead of mashed potatoes. The filet was cooked to her liking (very well), and the green beans were deliciously buttery.

IMG_1975.jpg

I chose the young French red hen (chicken) with leek fondue, wild rice hash, rhubarb preserve, and poultry jus. The accompaniments were wonderful - creamy leeks, crunchy rice, and sweet rhubarb. In addition, the chicken was perfectly cooked. One small problem with this dish - I really liked the crunchy wild rice, but when I took a bite of it with the chicken, it almost created the illusion of chewing on bone. Still, I loved this dish overall.

IMG_1977.jpg

IMG_1978.jpg

Before ordering desserts, we had some vanilla rooibos tea.

IMG_1979.jpg

Here's the dessert menu. I was leaning towards trying the cherry creme brulee (sorry, using a computer that doesn't let me type accents )

IMG_1972.jpg

Then suddenly, we received a big surprise from our server and the chef!

IMG_1980.jpg

A sampler of desserts.

The birthday cupcake was lighter than expected:

IMG_1981.jpg

Milkshakes! I had the strawberry one and my mom had chocolate.

IMG_1983.jpg

Lemon pudding cake with fruit leather. I've had this before and liked the soft, spongy texture with the zesty citrus flavor:

IMG_1985.jpg

Finally, the chocolate-peanut: valrhona chocolate brownie, smoked peanut panna cotta, and vanilla gelato. I'm not a huge peanut fan, but the flavor of peanut wasn't overwhelming and complemented the rich chocolate brownie. The cold vanilla gelato with a crunchy waffle cone was the perfect pairing. :goodvibes

IMG_1984.jpg

Needless to say, I passed on the creme brulee. :rotfl:

Once again, Yachtsman delivered one of the highlights of our trip, especially regarding my mom's birthday celebration: personalized menu, amuse bouche, and the most amazing dessert plate we've ever received in Disney. Service was great as usual, and the food was great all around. Yachtsman is widely known for its steaks, but the appetizers, chicken, dessert, and service were just as good as (if not better than) many of the other signature restaurants. :thumbsup2

What a lovely ending to what looks like a wonderful meal at YS

It really is a great restaurant :goodvibes

Fantastic review of YS! We've never been but we've read so many great reviews recently that DH and I might have to go for a romantic meal there next time we are in WDW!

Really enjoying all your reviews :thumbsup2

We spent our actual anniversary dinner at Yatchsman and we LOVED it. Personalized menu and amuse bouche but no dessert special.....I'm jealous ;) Glad they made your Mom's birthday special!
