Well we're back and its taken me a few days to actually find time to check these boards. Here is my long story..lol. We returned on the 29th after 11 nights at SSR. The 29th was the only time we saw rain the entire trip. We needed jackets a few days/nights but the weather was otherwise perfect!! So much more enjoyable to visit AK when you aren't dying of heat and humidity (well all the parks but that one seems to be the worst!). This was our first visit as members and we used DP to stay in a studio for the trip (myself, dh, dd (12) and dd (7).

Our trip started out rough as the ME took forever to finally get to our resort after many stops prior to SSR. We landed 10ish p.m. but didn't actually get to our resort and in our studio until 2 A.M.!! Very long day! But in the morning when I woke up from excitement it was so cool to open those sliding doors to the balcony and see green grass and beautiful surroundings! We were in a corner unit, second floor in Grandstand. From our side view we could see the gs pool and from our balcony we saw the 10th hole. In our opinion this was the place to request. It had that great pool near us (which was good since the main pool was closed most of the visit) and it was the first stop out and the first stop back in to the resort!! There was a short walk to the main bldgs and to the boat to DTD. I found it to be perfect!!

The bus situation, for us, was great. We never had a long wait either at the parks or the resort. We only had to stand once on a trip back from BB. Unlike prior trips to Pop Century, we never had to watch a bus fill up and wait for the next. Even though we were told the resort was booked. In addition the parks were very busy. The key, we found, was to get at the parks just before opening and get fast passes for things we wanted to see. To us, waiting 2 hours for Toy Story wouldn't have been worth it. However, planning ahead and getting those FP and standing in the 30 minute line was good!

We ate bfast in our room every morning except the day we ate at the "castle" since we had ordered from GG. This saved time (and money) as the kids could eat while dh and myself got ready and vise versa. We purchased the TIW card and used that, the AP and DVC discounts whenever possible. Unlike other postings, we had no problems sharing that space for so many nights with the 4 of us. However, we have yet to try a one bedroom so that would probably make a difference!

We used the OKW pool one morning and the kids enjoyed that. One day we took a trip to our home resort (AKV) to see how things were going. We also took a trip to the Welcome Home Wednesday event and stopped to try the Kitchen Sink at Beaches and Cream. That was so neat and we were glad we tried that!! We also took the time to rent a pontoon boat at DTD and let the kids try Blizzard Beach for the first time. We had always been commando style vacationers and this time, even though we were up early at the parks, we seemed to find more time to enjoy other things as well.

After visiting other resorts my DH seemed to change his opinion of SSR a bit. He enjoyed how at other resorts they offer more things as far as places to eat. At OKW they have that place to grab a hamburger or enjoy a casual sit down meal. At the boardwalk you are near many restaurants just outside your door. At SSR you were really limited to flatbread sandwiches and things in their refrigerated section (which btw, nothing was priced). The GS pool had a place to fill your refillable mugs although it was never open when we would have used it. The bartender said there were no exact hours. We found it was even closed by 8 p.m. when they had movies by the pool (which btw, is a cool thing for kids!). That would have been very disappointing if we actually purchased the mugs but we noticed form the first day that it wasn't open much so we didn't buy them. In addition he had 2 separate problems with the cms at the concierge desk and their lack of help. He was so frustrated that he told me he had better service at Pop Century and paid a lot less to use those rooms. Of course by the end of the trip he calmed down and we both had a great trip, none the less.

The main pool opened on the 27th. The girls really enjoyed that and it was so very pretty. The whole resort was beautiful. Oh as is the flower and garden show at Epcot. So glad we were able to see that for the first time as well. There are many resorts we have yet to visit so I am excited to try them but I will have no problems booking SSR again either.

Well guess this TR is way long enough. Re-reading it brings a smile to my face though as I hope this first trip is just the start to many more awesome memories "Home"!

YAY! Im leaving for SSR in a month. Im keeping my fingers crossed that I can get into the Grandstand section. Do you have any pictures to post?

DISNEYFOURME,

Did you try the Turf Club restaraunt? We find it to be very tasty and very relaxing. I do wish they would serve breakfast though.

Glad you had a good time.

Shan

Thanks so much for your positive post. We are planning a VERY long trip this summer, staying at AKL for 8 nights then switching for 9 nights at SSR. I've been reading so many negative reviews of SSR lately that your post was very refreshing. We requested Springs or Grandstand. That is a bummer that they close down the refilling station so early. Thanks for taking the time. .

It seems that the bar and mug refill station at the Grandstand pool has always had shorter and unpredictable hours. The station at The Springs pool is usually open later - 9pm last summer. If you are at the Springs pool, it is also a short 45 second walk to Artists Pallette for mug refills or food!

DISNEYFOURME,

Nope we never tried it. Although one evening we walked past all the people holding pagers waiting for a seat. It smelled great! The few times we might have wanted a meal at the hotel it would have been nice to just grab a burger or such and not have to wait for a seat. I will put that on the list for our next visit though!!

Had the idea of a filling station close to our room been a reason to request GS area it would have been frustrating not to be able to use it when we wanted it. However, that wasn't something we needed. With the main pool closed most of our trip though we used the GS pool and didn't go too many times to the AP.:)

sorry.. haven't figured out how to post pics yet! I have lost enough hours of sleep just reading posts! Hope you have a great time there too and enjoy it as much as we did! As I stated we checked in after 1:30 a.m. and had no problem with our requests (2nd floor and GS). We made those requests when we booked our trip, if that matters. I am sure we just got lucky and won't hold our breath for future trips! Wish I was there NOW!!!

I am glad you enjoyed your (lucky you) long stay at SSR. We also stayed in a studio with two adults and three kids (1 in a crib). Only 1 night! I think I could have managed for a few more nights but we have been spoiled by stays in a 2br so we felt tight.

Grandstand is a great section. I don't know why there are so many complaints about SSR. I have been reading more and more positive trip reports lately. Maybe the naysayers will stay away!

Thanks for the report!

I am glad you had a great trip! We are headed to SSR for two weeks in June and I am so excited. I would love to see some pictures when you figure out how to post them.

Phew...I read your report holding my breath...waiting for a comment about the obnoxiously loud kids in the room next to yours...as I thought you were our neighbors last week! :rotfl: But...upon closer reading I think you must have been in the building across from ours.

We too had a wonderful visit to SSR...no problem fitting myself, DH, DD11 and DS7 in a studio! The weather was perfect, the resort is beautiful, the crowds were manageable by following the same strategy...hit the parks at opening, FP and ride standby on our favorites, early lunch, then back to the resort to swim and enjoy DTD. Our only disppointment was that we exchanged into SSR through Interval and that is no longer an option, so that may be our only stay at SSR. :sad1:

Other points:
- the queen bed was much softer than we're used to...actually preferred the firmer mattress at Pop on our one extra night
- the sofa sleeper was surprisingly comfortable...although too short for most adults to sleep stretched out...the kids liked it though
- beware the chilly fridge that froze all of our food the first night!
- we had requested Grandstand by the pool, and got Grandstand as-far-from-the-pool-as-possible. I politely asked if there might be anything available closer to the pool and she easily found another unit right next to the pool, so it's worth asking
- we loved the peace and quiet and open feel of the resort, and that it wasn't overly themed...however I agree with those who say it is HUGE, and if we had been in the paddock or carousel sections we probably would have had to use our car more
- the buses did come promptly, but we still used our car to get to the parks on many occassions (even MK). Being at Grandstand means you're the 1st stop, so it can take up to 15 minutes to leave the resort. We probably didn't save time, but it definitely made some of us less tense than waiting at each stop as people piled on!
- we LOVED taking the boat to DTD and did that several times. The few times we drove over it took 10-15 minutes just to find a parking space!
- although we have stayed offsite in 1 and 2 bedroom units before, the main drawback for us to the studio was not having a dryer in the unit. In the studio there is no place to dry towels (we bring our own beach towels) and suits except in the shower. Since the bathroom door needs to be closed most of the time to access the vanity, no air circulates and the towels never dry. We ended up putting them on the chairs on the balcony, but I hate how tacky that looks!

Happy to answer any other questions!

We will be at SSR in two weeks and it is our first time :cool1: so where do you think we should ask for. :confused3 Closes to the pool or the food courts? I know they tell you they can not promise anything.

Well I have only this 1 experience at SSR so I am sure you will get better input but.. we LOVED the grandstand section close to the pool. It had a real nice pool and splash area if you have kids. It was a real short walk to the main area (AP, Community Hall and main pool). There isn't a "food court" there just Artist Palatte. That was my smallest complaint about the trip was the small variety there although many have suggested that the Turf Club was a good sit down restaurant. AP also sells a small amount of grocery items as well. Anyway, GS was the first stop the bus makes which is nice because you will have a seat and not have to stand. It also drops you off first which is wonderful after a long day! Some complain that the first stop has to stop at all the other stops but it only took 10 minutes every trip and to me it was worth it! Oh and it is real close to the boat stop for downtown disney and OKW. In fact it was such a nice walk and we never saw anybody using the path?!

Boy I am jealous.. would love to be going back! Have a great time!:goodvibes

oh.. another thought. Whenever you decide where you want to stay I would call and have them put that on your reservations ahead of your arrival. I made my request when I booked my trip. I am not sure if that matters but we were happy to get what we wanted. Oh we also requested 2nd floor because we wanted a balcony and not a patio.

If you request The Springs section, you are right at the main pool AND Artists Pallette (which is the combination counter service, small grocery and gift shop).

If you put The Grandstand as your second choice, you are less than a 5 minute walk from the above, plus have your own smaller pool in that section.
