One thing I've not read about and I'm sure I just missed it, but how did he get into the school?? It sounded like he was NOT a student there right?

The whole thing seems so strange.

If he's not a student. Then how did he get into the school, not to mention how did he get a rifle that typically has a 16"-20" barrel and would be around 36" or so in total length. Now he could have broken down the rifle into the main two pieces being the lower and upper receiver, but you'd still have 2 pieces. they could be put into a backpack but then again how did he get into the school?

If he was a student, then maybe it's easier and he broke the rifle down and assembled in a bathroom?

From what I've heard, he hid the gun in the woods near the school. When he left the class, he left the school, propping a door open and re-entered the school unchallenged until he tried to go back into his classroom. A student in his classroom saw the gun and refused to unlock the door, so he went to the next classroom with an open door. Which opens a whole other can of worms- why are exterior doors to schools allowed to open without an alarm going off? The honorific events at the elementary school in Texas were in part a result of a door being left unlocked.

At least at the school my kids attended about 10 miles from this school, many of the exterior doors had to remain unlocked especially during class change periods. The school had 50+ portable class room trailers and students needed to be able to freely go from the trailers to the building and back.

I don’t know if Apalachee had trailers.

I thought so much about this as I walked the halls of my elementary school yesterday. The shooter training in itself is traumatizing as I've written about in another thread. But going into multiple classrooms daily in my role and imagining being with these different age groups as shots ring out is too much. I think about helping 5 year olds barricade the door and putting hard objects into their little hands to throw at a gunman if he breaks through. I think about my older kids, 10 or 11, who would know what was happening and be terrified as they push the furniture and crawl under anything that hides them, yet some would end up being heroes who save others. It's heartbreaking. But enjoy your (general your) guns and ammo and militias, I'm sure it makes you feel protected and safe.

If not locked then cameras and sensors to alert resource officer or someone when external doors open during class hours or are propped open

I agree this sounds good in theory but the exterior doors are opening and closing all the time. Classes going to recess or outside to do a science experiment or lesson, teachers cutting between parts of the building outside to get a breath of fresh air on their walk, classes on brain breaks, PE having their class in a grassy area due to nice weather, employees leaving the building through different doors, etc. We also have students who elope and will run to a door and open it, most of the time for show and they don't really leave the building but other times zipping right out while being chased.

I know we can lock it way down and no one leaves the building from 7:20 to 3:20. Parents would lose their mind about no recess though, they fought and won a mandatory 15 minute brain break each day where students are taken outside or do a physical activity like dancing in the building. That's on top of recess and lunch and a specials class like art, music, or PE.

I haven't seen this thread veer into the political. Just the usual discussion about the 2A and those discussing the problems with guns. No political discussion at all as far as "sides" go politically nor have I even read much in the way of controversy with this particular event.
