The girls golf team has a meet today. They had to leave at 6:30. 3 of the varsity players had conflicts, one is getting confirmed and the other two have to take college placement tests for class selection next year. The coach opened up the remaining varsity slots to some of the JV players and none of them wanted to go because they didn't want to get up early . Several of these girls have had parents complain to the coach that their kid wasn't selected for varsity and younger girls are playing ahead of them, well I wonder why???

Was the coach understanding of the three who had to bow out or was he being spiteful? If the JV girls refused to play in support of them, I would understand that.

I believe OP completely understands that. (but maybe not?)

It seems that the coach asked some JV kids to fill the empty slots, but the early time wasn't worth it. The same parents of these lazy kids are the ones who complain that their child isn't selected for varsity.

I don't think she was calling the 3 who had to miss for a much more valid reason undedicated. It's the entitled ones who want the coveted slots, but can't make the early meet time b/c it's "too early".

In 'support' of them how? This wasn't a practice, it was a meet. By all accounts it doesn't appear at all that the coach said these varsity girls couldn't go, the girls themselves bowed out because of other more important commitments. These JV girls had a golden opportunity to SUPPORT the varsity girls by filling in for them, and SUPPORT the team by making the effort to play.

These JV girls failed miserably. If I were the coach, they'd be done for the season as they've demonstrated they cannot make the commitment to the team.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for the JV players to show their dedication. When it comes down to choosing the Varsity team next year, or offering some other opportunity, this lack of dedication could be the deciding factor. But I'm sure that won't stop the parents from *****ing.

Would the JV scores even count??? I know in high school tennis they would not. If they don't count maybe the girls thought what's the point. Just a thought.

Of course they would count. A JV player can always move up to varsity; but a varsity player can't move down.

This happens all the time in HS sports. A coach will often move a JV player up to fill a need, either permanent or temporary.

The way I read it was that 3 varisty girls couldn't play ( and the coach was fine with that) so there were 3 spots open, so they asked the JV girls to fill it..( these are the ones whose parents were upset they didnt make varsity) and the JV girls said no because they didnt want to get up early...so I think the OP was complaining about the JV girls

Really? In tennis it doesn't work that way. If your team is possibly headed to conf. playoffs your seeding line-up has to be the same for the 5 previous matches so coaches can't stack the draw.

Its completely different. You're part of a TEAM, not some kid who was cut during tryouts and is now being asked to fill in.

I don't see the JV teams and Varsity teams as one in the same. Perhaps it depends on the sport, or the school. But they were not all big one happy "team" when I was in high school.

Maybe it's different where you are, but my dd played high school sports and the jv players would jump at the chance to fill in on the varsity team! Most of the jv players' goal was to make varsity after a year or two on jv, and what better way to impress/get to know the coach than to fill in on varsity? Now if these jv players aren't planning to continue onto varsity, I'm sure there are others who are, and who would be willing to get up early.

I support your position, OP. My DD is in day three of the state HOSA conference. This is her third day of 6 AM to midnight hours. Her event was over the first day and she wanted to leave early and I told her no way - you have an obligation.

My son plays on his HS golf team. Its not a big team where there are plenty of 'reserves' at each level. Golf is not a sport that many kids either play or have the means to play...it requires you to have your own equipment; something that can cost a lot of money. The coach has told them all to be ready to play whenever asked, as he can move JV up to Varsity to avoid forfeiting a match.

Even when my daughter played field hockey, all players at the JV level knew there was ALWAYS the potential for them to play during the Varsity game. The only restriction was that they were limited to 60 minutes TOTAL per day, so if they played one half of the JV game they were limited to only one half of the Varsity game. Many of the better sophomore and junior players on the JV team also played at the Varsity level.

The coach was totally supportive of the kids that couldn't make it, I was referring to the JV kids. They ended up taking a 7th grader who is working with the team (in our state 7-12 are eligible for varsity sports). She did fine but they only had 5 girls go, normally 6 play.


It would have been an excellent opportunity for some JV kids to step up especially since there are 3 other tournaments coming up that will have JV kids playing "varsity". One is because the regular varsity has 3 other matches that week and the coach won't pull them out of school that much and the other two will be a second varsity squad in our home invites. There will be 3 slots open on varsity next year. The team took 3rd place--everyone played terrible--but they had fun. Our DD got to play with a girl that cried the whole time though . It took them 5 hours 40 minutes to play (normally it takes about 4 1/2 hours) because of her.

My DD runs cross country, and believe me, those girls are tough and dedicated! I'm stunned that a few JV players passed up the chance to play at a higher level--they might have even gotten a spot on the varsity team for this year.

In XC, they all train together, but there are three levels of training. DD was asked to train with varsity for the last few weeks of the season (bumping up to 8 miles a day), and she travelled to varsity states. However, she didn't actually RUN in them--they took 12 girls and could only run 7. DD ran in the JV race. However, at the banquet, DD got her varsity letter--her name wa son the roster, she did the training, the coach considered her varsity. From her perspective, she was only #12 of the 12 person varsity squad. But, there were 27 girls total, and only 3 freshmen lettered.

Sorry for the ramble, this is my first year dealing with HS sports. But, it really adds perspective to the lack of dedication the OP is seeing.

A party??? This is a sport...some kids are better than others. The better kids make varsity. The goal of the JV kids SHOULD be to improve and make varsity themselves. Getting this opportunity should be something they'd be thrilled about.

We come at this from a soccer point of view, and I agree--DS and I are home today after he reffed 2 little kid soccer games, and played in his own at 4:30. He's a 7th grader, and next year he'll be allowed to try out for the JV team at our HS. 8th graders may not play varsity, but it's a GREAT opportunity for him to get some face time in front of the coaches, and will hopefully set him in good stead for when he gets to the HS.

I cannot imagine any JV player turning down an opportunity to play up with the Varsity, you never know when those chances will come around again, and you have to grab them while you can.
