bought new lenses that is......

Thought I would join them. I am now the proud owner of a Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II ASL IF lens. It now has the focus motor built in so it will work with the entry level Nikon DSLR's (the D40, D40x D60 etc.)

This will most likely replace my Nikkor 18-70mm lens as my main walk around lens. It so nice to have a constant F2.8 at your disposal when needed.

For those of you that have this lens what are your thoughts on it.

Thanks for looking!!:goodvibes

Congrats on the new purchase, Dave! Do you plan to get rid of your own lens, or will you keep it as a back-up just in case? This is one of the lenses I have been considering as my next purchase if I can't justify the $1,000 pricetag of Nikon's 17-55. I'll definitely be looking forward to hearing a review and seeing some pics!

PS: I'll have you know, I don't have many lenses---most I sell if I find I don't use them to fund the purchase of something new. :thumbsup2 Right now, I have a lensbaby, a fisheye, a 30mm prime, an 85mm prime and the 70-200. That's only 5 lenses!! (although that doesn't account for the 50mm I'm bidding on right now :rolleyes1) :rotfl2:

Thanks Ann!!! Sorry for the title but I just had to do it.

Not sure what I'm going to do with 18-70 just yet. My son may be buying the D80 in which he will need a lens. In that case I will just by a new body and put the Tamron on it.

I'm with you on the cost of the Nikkor version. Just can't see spending that much. Hopefully this will work out. I will keep you posted. Next on my list is the Nikkor 35mm F1.8 to replace my 50mm. I find the 50mm is just to tight on the crop body..

I got this lens back in October. At first I wasn't entirely sure about, however, now I find it to be a GREAT lens. Love the image quality and the sharpness. The f/2.8 throughout the focal length has come in handy a number of times.

I upgraded from the 18-135mm and 18-70mm Nikon lenses and I haven't yet missed the longer focal length.

Congrats on the new purchase.

DH has just told me I can buy this one. I keep putting it in the cart but haven't committed to it yet. Would love to hear your review.

I can't decide between this one and the 16-85 Nikkor. I keep going back and forth. Can't wait to see your pics with this one!!

I have the canon version of this lens. I really like it except for the part that it twists the opposite directions of canon lens when zooming.
It also seems to do alot of hunting in lower light.

Though I have found it to take quite sharp pictures. I think you will enjoy it :thumbsup2

Congrats, it's a fantastic value. I've had the Sony version for about a year and a half and would recommend it to anyone (especially Sony & Pentax folks as body-IS makes it even that much better). It's my go-to lens when shooting my kids day-to-day. Sharpness is on-par with the Nikkor 17-55 / Canon 17-55.

I have the Nikkor version of this lens ... the 17-55 f2.8 and I can tell you its my go to lens most of the time. I am sure you will love the lens. Its really nice having the constant 2.8 with this focal length range. I was lucky enough to come across and bought mine gently used otherwise I probably would not have the Nikon version.

Excellent!!! Congratulations.

Here are a few pictures I took with my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 with my D300:

Hey hey, I can't help it if I try to find any reason I can think of to buy OEM lenses!! It's really odd considering the Sigma is my favorite lens so far...:upsidedow

As long as Karyl doesn't let me borrow hers and make me fall in love, I think I'll be ableto save the extra couple hundred and get the Tammy...but Karyl is one of my biggest NAS enablers, so I'm sure I'll get a PM with an offer right about....

I have the Canon version of this lens, incredibly sharp even at f2.8
- good lens for the money

Thanks so much everybody, I'm sure I'm going to love this lens.

I haven't had much of chance to use it yet but once I have some sample pics I will be sure to post them.

My first impressions so far is that this is a solidly built lens. It feels much more solid when zooming then my Nikkor 18-70 lens though it is a little noisier when focusing. I did find that it does seem to focus hunt in lowlight more then the Nikkor. Over all I feel this is a very decent lens considering the cost compared OEM lenses.

I wonder if that rebate would work here in Canada? Though I did get it for a pretty decent price considering that almost everything is more expensive here in Canada....lol

Great pics Kyle!! Thanks for sharing! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Wenrob: I would say go for it. Like I said above this lens very solid. Most reviews that have read rated this lens slightly better then the Sigma version of which I was first considering buying.

The rebate is for $25 if you buy the version with Vibration Reduction. That version is a few hundred dollars more than the version without Vibration Reduction.

Ahh yes your right I didn't catch the VC in there. Thanks Kyle

Here's some of the first shots with the new lens. The subject matter is not all that great but I do think they came out pretty sharp.

If I recall it right, when we met up for the fisheye I had the 17-55 on my D300 and you didn't even want to look thru that lens because you knew it would not be long after you'd have to start looking for one. I am sure when the weather breaks and we can actually get together for a shoot and you have the opportunity to put it on that D90 of yours you will be hooked and there will be no stopping your finding a way to justify the price tag. :rolleyes1
