Well, I spent a few hours at Urgent Care today...

and now I can only use one hand! I was taking my dog outside to go potty when our neighbor's dumb ol' jack russell jumped my poor german shepard! Xander is a 1.5 year old full blooded AKC german shepard so he is a BIG dog. I don't know what that little mutt was thinking, but he launched himself on Xander's back (mid-pee mind you) and thus the fight began. I was the screaming woman being drug around in circles by the aspiring "Cujos", trying to keep my balance while wearing my favorite sandles. Xander's big paws almost tripped me when they got stuck on my shoe. I swear that little dog looked like the creature from the Aliens movies with fangs bared dripping saliva!! Somehow as I was trying to hold my dog back from killing that mutt, my left index finger got caught up in the leash. After the woman across the street helped get the jack russell into her garage, I noticed my finger was numb and swelling a vivid purple. So I went to UCC to get it checked and it is sprained really badly. The doc said he was surprised it was not broken. He did give me a lovely parting gift...the itchy uncomfortable splint I have to wear for three days! And how was your day??

Oddly enough, my boss was walking her greyhound yesterday (on a leash) and a Jack Russell Terrier came flying out of a neighboring yard and just launched into the (much larger) greyhound. My boss was at her vets both yesterday and today-- the poor greyhound has three huge gashes and hardly any skin left on her behind

As a proud , responsible JRT lover/owner I feel I need to say something.

Jack Russells are VERY high maintainence dogs. They are jumpers by nature and very excitable and hyper. I seriously doubt in either care mentioned here that the Jack (assuming it was fixed and properly cared for) was trying to hurt the other dogs, just trying to play.

We do not let Monty near other dogs when we go out without first letting them sniff each other from a distance and seeing how the initially react. I have seen Monty leap at Rotties. He does not care. Everyone is someone to play with to him and sometimes, other dogs get freaked out by it and react in a way that causes the jack russel to react and so on. Doggie misunderstandings.

Now if the dog, whatever breed it is, is not fixed or trained and allowed to just rome around the neighborhood not on a leash
by itself, then that's a whole other story.

I honestly have to say I get annoyed with some JRT owners. JRTs are among the most difficult to care for breeds because of their hyperactivity and stubborness. People really should research breeds before getting a dog. It sounds to me like in both of these cases, the owners did not.

Now that you mention it, the JRT is usually left on the owners balcony and the only time I have seen it out was on a leash very briefly. It is the only pet they have, I think. I DO know for a fact that it was a JRT (I grew up in a horse farm community and they have JRT races at the local track) and he was definately NOT playing. His gums were visible as well as teeth as he tried to attack my dog. The whole thing started when he jumped on Xander's back and bit him (there was blood and a bite mark). Xander on the other hand just snapped around the dog never leaving a mark. The JRT breed on a whole are fun and as you said VERY VERY high strung. The mutt reference was not a slur against the breed, but rather that particular dog. I think to own ANY dog, you have to be a responsible person and train your dog correctly, definately socializing it to other people (animals included).

On a whining note: Have you EVER tried to change a diaper with ONE hand?! In the dog fight, I accede victory to the "mutt". I have been brought low.

I appreciate all the well wishes. In regards to the question about the owner, I saw her today and she was in Syracuse for the day. I asked how the dog got out and she said he was tied in back and he ATE through the tie out! This is a pretty small dog so I am in awe that he bit a metal lead in half. It makes me glad he didn't bite me.

Oh and thanks for the lovely compliement on my girls!

How are you and Xander doing today?

That owner, IMO, should be reported. There are probably leash laws. I can't even imagine letting Monty off his leash, ever.
