Our Trip to the State Fair (Or Why it's a good thing we fly to Disney!)

Part One: The Journey

Things started out really well Saturday morning. I got up on time, mom got up on time, Jarrod and Ethan were easy to get up. Jarrod wasn't terribly bad to get moving. OUr goal was to be out of the house and on the road by 8 am. We did a great job...in the car by 8:11am!! :woohoo: Before we left the drive way we did one last check...
clothes...check
food...check
ticket vouchers for fair...check
meds....check

Okay we had everything we needed.... :lmao:

The journey was very good. Ethan and Jarrod watched Curious George and mom and I chit chatted. All was good until she asked me if I had thought to pick up print out of the hotels in the area...you know...the one where we wrote down the name of hotel where we were staying, the address of said hotel, the phone number of said hotel, and which had our confirmation number on it! I didn't grab it, I thought you grabbed it  oops...which hotel did we make the ressie at? Quality Inn? Days Inn? Comfort Inn? we knew it wasn't the Holiday Inn because she remembed calling them and they were more expensive (don't go cheap people!! go for the one that costs a little more!!)

This is what the paper looked like that we printed from the internet. We knew that it was the top one but what was it? :confused3

We finally decided it was the Comfort Inn. But there was probably more than one in Richmond. I did remember that it was on West Broad Street and that it was 4.1 miles from the fair (don't believe everything you read :teeth: ).

We did talk to one of the very nice folks working the fair and he got us the phone number. I called the hotel and had to ask if I was booked at that hotel or not  They said we were! Boy did I feel like dork!!!!

Now finding the fair was not as easy as it should have been. Mom said there would be signs to tell us where to get off the interstate. WRONG! I saw one sign that said "Richmond Raceway". I thoguht that was where we were going but it didn't say "State Fair Here Idiot" so we didn't get off. We drove, and drove, and drove...till mom finally called the *77 on the phone and talked to a very helpful state trooper. He told us how to get there, but itw as still a little confusing...did he say 81 South or 81 and 1 South? So we pulled into a convience store....Me: "Yes, can you tell me how to get to the state fair?" Clerk: "Where is the state fair? I would like to take my kids to it?" Inside my head, "Well if I knew that ya moron I wouldn't be asking you!!!!" out loud, "it's at the Richmond Race track" Clerk: "Oh I know where that is!!" So she gave me directions.

Now the strange thing here is that before I got out of teh car to go inside Jarrod says to me, "Colden says when you are done at the gas station to turn right and then at the light turn left." Jarrod you don't know where we are so you can't give us directions (Colden is his invisible friend!)

So I come out and say Turn right out of the gas station and turn left at the next light and we'll be there! :faint: So his "invisible friend" gives good directions!!!

Part Two: The Fair

The fair was really nice. We saw pigs, goats, sheep, cows, horses, calves (and not just the ones on the square dancers!), snakes, bugs, rednecks, bikers, toothless, half dressed, and a variety of other endangered species!

We rode all the kiddie rides, the giant slide, and I even got Jarrod on the kiddie coaster!! He loved it. Rode it 4 times in a row and by the end was holding his arms in the air!! I see Goofy's Barnstormer on his list of to do this November.

The food was the biggest draw. We ate at three different bbq places. The first place had pulled bbq pork that was dry and salty. The second place with pulled bbq pork was virginia style and it was extremely juicy and not really very good, the last place was a NC bbq place it was excellent! yummy!

We had two funnel cakes (one a day) and I had one fried twinkie. Man that was really good! Although, at $4 a peice it was a bit expensive. I also saw elephant ears, fried oreos, frozen bananas, cheesecake on a stick dipped in chocolate, spaghetti on a stick, smores on a stick, frozen snickers, and few different ice cream options! (I hope I walked enough to work off some of those calories!!)

While walking around it occured to us that we had forgotten to bring the crib tent to keep Ethan in his crib at night. He has one on his bed at home and he gets very upset if you don't zip it closed at night. Well, I guess I would be putting him back in a bed a few times before he decided to go to sleep.

It was obvious to me and Pluto that we weren't in Disney anymore. The people working the rides were less than friendly and acted like we were in their way! The custodial staff was less than stellar as well. They had bright orange shirts on that said "Extreme Clean". Yeah, well, I wouldn't call what they were doing as Extreme! Man they spilled more garbage and walked past it rather than pick it up.

We also noticed that everyone working the place smoked. I guess it was obvious we were in the heart of tobacco country! I think I have black lung just from walking around!!!!

Overall the fair was fun and I think we will do it again next year!!

:

Part Three: The Hotel

Earlier in the day when I called to find out if I was registered, I also got directions to the hotel "Right on Laburnum, Left on Boulevard, Right on West Broad, look for the hotel." He also said there would be a staue at Boulevard in the middle of the road.

So we pull out on to Laburnum and drive all the way to the end passing a statue in the middle of the road. The statue was at Hermitage. Not Boulevard. So we kept going. Got to a dead end and turned around and went back, past the Statue again. So we pulled over and called. The girl told us that Hermitage and Boulevard ran parallel to each other. But she said we could get there if we took Hermitage. Making our 4th U-Turn of the day we got past the statue and eventually found the hotel.

I pulled in the front of the hotel and there was a little narrow road where you could park to check in. But after I stopped there I noticed a piece of equipment blocking my path to get out at the other end. So I would have to back out of this little narrow drive. Someone pulled in behind me and so they backed up the ramp on the end of the building so I couldn't get up that ramp to the parking. So we went behind the building and came to the other ramp and started up it...only to realize that this was the exit ramp and we weren't supposed to be going this way...oops! Oh hell, it was almost midnight no one was leaving at that hour!

We lugged our stuff in, got into the room only to discover there was no crib. We requested it when we called and made the ressies, mom double checked when she confirmed the ressies two days ago, and yet there is no crib. I called down stairs and said we needed a crib. The guy says, "Oh we don't have any cribs." What do you mean don't have any cribs. I have a baby and we requested a crib. "Sorry, don't have any cribs, guess the person you talked to didn't know that we don't have cribs" :confused3

So we called back and requested extra blankets and sheets so we could make a pallet on the floor for the kids. Ethan can't sleep in a bed yet b/c he doesn't stay in one place and tends to move around a lot. They sent the one eyed security guard to bring us our blankets and stuff!! :lmao:

I spent the whole night trying to put the baby back to sleep. He didn't do too well without a crib. He was up and down like a yo yo!! One time he got up and grabbed grandma's ears and turned her head over and yelled, "Gama I want kisses" then he came over to me a little while later and said, "mama R you??" and then when I was laying next to him after a few minutes of quiet he says, "mama you sleepin?" :rotfl:

basically, I slept about 45 minutes in small bursts the entire night!! It was fun!! Comfort Inn home offices will be hearing from us!!

The next morning going back to the fair we retraced our steps. However, this time we turned onto Blvd. straight from West Broad. I thought it looked kinda familiar!! HERMITAGE TURNS INTO BOULEVARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dang morons can't give decent directions! ugh!!!

But we got back to the fair relatively easily and we had a great second day!

Part Four: The Journey home

PUlled out of the fair, went to a Citgo, got directions, and went straight home. No U-Turns, no wrong turns, no missing signs!

We got home about 530 last night and we were happy to be home.

Thus ends my disertation on our trip! If you enjoyed it great. If you didn't...well, then you probably won't be reading right now so I don't really care!!!! :rotfl

While walking around it occured to us that we had forgotten to bring the crib tent to keep Ethan in his crib at night
Tara, guess you forgot somtin' an they did too. (fergot to tell ya you didn't need to worry about forgettin' that crib tent.
Glad it all worked out after all.

Well, turns out Julian doesn't have a spider bite, it is a wart. So, I need to call a dermatologist and wait for a referral and see what he says.

Lily, I saw in the PD that Memphis Drive-In was closing. :( We went there once this summer. We usually go to Autorama, though, as it is closer, and has a more "family" feel. Sad to see it close, though. :(

Paula, Harley is soooo adorable. :) :)

Beth, good to see you pop in and share your 3 minutes with us. :)

Amanda, Yay for new furniture. :bounce: Have fun with no boss this week. :teeth:

Hi Kimmar!! Hi Alan! Hi John!

Evening, all!

Well, I made mention of Mouse Surplus yesterday in passing. Of course, this meant that Ed HAD to go today-so much for house cleaning.

Off to Orlando we went-only walked out with a few things for the boys (pins and such) and a Poly mirror. Now Ed wants the Wilderness Lodge Armoires to replace our Ikea dressers that didn't like moving 4 times.

We were hungry when we left, so we headed over towards Florida Mall to find food. Ended up at CPK in the mall and decided to walk off the lunch (which hadn't been in the plans). There's an Apple store there, so we went in-prices dropped on the iPods, there's a new 80gig for less than what a 60 gig cost 3 weeks ago. Ed's a happy man-I got his Christmas present today. :teeth: Then we found something we haven't seen in two years-Kohr Brother's Custard.

Afterwards, we went to the other place we needed to visit-Bass Pro Shops. We found the camping gear we needed for our Cub Scout trip-all reasonably priced. All we need now is a table, and we're all set.

Tired? Yes!

Bummer on a Drive In closing, any drive in. It's a piece of the past I hope never goes away. Sounds like a bunch of you should plan a DISmeet at the Autorama!

Sherry, glad to hear it's not a spider bite. Around these parts, the family seems to get cellulitis from spider bites. Hope that wart doesn't hurt all that much.

Amanda, :wave2: Miss seeing you and Todd around here.

Lainey, your favorite store is in that mall!

Lily, ugh on Ted getting called into work. Well, you've got less than 200 days, what are his plans? Anytime soon? Yay on vacation!

Kimmar, How are you doing? How's mom?

Tara, sounds like someone could've done with velcro jammies! Glad mine are older, but they were notorious for that stuff.

Bethie, just hearing your schedule is making me tired. I thought I was a busy lady-you're much busier!

Gotta get my table grids done for the morning. Mad love to everyone!

Sorry...didn't mean to kill the thread!! I promise I won't write that much next time!!

Elaine...glad you had a good time with Mark. You sure you're not going after that girl's man all these years later?? lol!!

Sherry...glad it's not a spider bite (had one one time...it ain't fun) but sorry it's a wart. Cute picture from the other day!!

Lily...The last time I went to a drive in was when I was 4. I don't remember it at all, but mom says I was there!

Amanda...thanks for the wishes that this week would be better...no such luck...had two "fits" today. One required security the other required a threat that mom would be called to pick him up and he wouldn't be allowed to ride the bus home if he didn't get it together!!!

Paula...I like your Harley!! That's more my style of a Harley!! So has Jeffery adjusted to her yet?

Alan...I like the touring style you've chosen....I saw lots of people like that at the fair!! hehehehe

Had a lousy night bowling but it's okay because it was better than having kids scream at me!! hehehehe

Testing starts tomorrow so not sure I'll be able to get on the computer tomorrow!!

have a great night gang!!
tara

Hey Paula, is he calling her Harley yet? That face would melt anyone!

Suzanne

Morning!!

Tara, forgot to say that I loved the trip report! :lmao:

Time to get the boys moving!!

Hi y'all... just have a lot going on... not much time to play

But Tara, I read your trip report!!! Fantastic, but sorry about the hotel issues :( I do think deep fried twinkies are the best

mad love to you all!

Morning all!

Tara...Do you ever have an easy trip :rotfl2:

Nothing going on today. Have one project I need to complete...but after that I am through for the week :goodvibes Just need to physically be here.

Got home later than normal last night, I don't do well with that so I was very crabby. These are the nights I wish Todd was home to help with homework, getting dinner ready and getting things ready for the next day :sad2:

Paula...your new family member is very cute. I would never have to worry about Todd warming up to a new pet, but he would have to worry about me. I tend to be the caretaker, so more pets means more work for me. Although he did take care of the hampster. I don't do rodents.

Lily...Todd and I talk about going to the drive in all the time, but never make it.

Have a terrific day everyone!

Oh I don’t know why, but this tickled me today. :lmao: glad no one heard me.

Amanda, there is something you don’t do? You are always amazing me with all that you do.

Tara, hope that your testing day is peaceful, somehow I would think that would tend to more “meltdowns.” Get those lousy bowling nights over early in the season. That’s a good idea.

Elaine, hope you get things settled with whatever it is you’ve got going today.

Sherry, Good morning! I don’t remember if I said anything a bit ago, but I’m glad things are working more smoothly for Julian and school. Glad it’s not a spider bite. The wart thing should be remedied easily enough.

Suzanne, you sure had a productive day getting all that “stuff.” Mmmm ice cream!

Kimmar, AC hope all is well.

Everyone else who has not had a chance to post, hope yer all doing well.

I signed up for my first session with the dinner prep thing. We go Thursday evening. I'm hesitant b/c I'm such a picky eater and I don't want things to be too unhealthy. I know the choices will be appreciated by the remainder of the family since we are all bored with our usual. Since Ted and I will be away on vaca in a few days, (7 more work sleeps) I won't have to worry that there won't be anything to fix.

:rotfl: nope never!!! Just once I would like to have a trip go absolutely perfect! I sometimes think that the Key Stone Cops are my relatives!! :lmao:

break in testing. Times up gotta go give the next section!!

back later.... I hope!!

Did they have any of the pieces parts of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire lying about? I bought one of the button panels through Ebay. It seems that they weren't a very hot item. I know someone who NEEDS one and I'm not willing to give mine up. If you happen to be back there anytime soon, let me know. I think that it is a good thing that I live over 1000 miles away from there.

And those Wilderness Lodge Armoires look really nice!!!

Okay, maybe I'm back for awhile now. I have caught up (ketchuped?) on everyone's lives so I will offer congratulations, best wishes, good lucks, and anything else needed. :)

Tara, I saw our fair going up this morning as I drove to work. My workplace is next door to the fairgrounds. I used to go every year when I was working in a Lions Club pancake booth :teeth:

Now that we have the girls, we have only gone once or twice. They were at Disney in Dec. and have been to Six Flags twice and Dollywood once this Summer. I'm not even going to mention the fair to them. ;)

Quiet day here today.

Lily, have fun at your food prep night. Sounds fun.

Hi y'all! Busy busy here. My arm hurts from getting pricked iwth needles! I had to go to the "health fair" at Luis' work. Apparently my honey is an excellent guy at the limbo and I am not half bad myself :rotfl:

Amanda, I was thinking the same thing about Tara's trip. Makes me think I should never plan one with her ;) Sorry about your evening last night though :( I can imagine what it is like with him not home at night.

Lily, we saw a dinner prep thing here as well. We tried the beef stroganoff and it was good. I looked at the rest of the foods, and I think that I would be a bit worried too. Though I admit, for now I doubt I would really need that kind of thing anyway here.

John, very cool that you got that button pannel. Wonder why those weren't a hot item... I thought eveyrone loved that show there!

Awww, Alan :( I was hoping you would eat a deep fried milkyway for me *sigh*

Howdy Sherry & Kimmar :)
