Weird Things You Find Oddly Comforting

What are some weird things that, for whatever reason, invoke a sense of calm and comfort for you? For me it's:

  • Videos of passenger airplanes taking off and landing (taken from inside the plane). The roar of the engines is awe-inspiring, and hearing the sounds just reminds me of all of the great vacations I've taken.
  • When I turn on my heater for the first time in the fall, and all of the dust that accumulated on it over the summer burns off. By all rights it should smell bad, but I actually like it. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I'd come in from the cold and get warmed up.
What are some of yours?

I agree with everyone who said rain. The heavier the better. Lightning and thunder isn't as relaxing as rain, but I enjoy it too, in a different way.

The others are not odd, but...

When my dogs curl up at my hip.

Rocking a baby, especially when they are fresh and clean from a bath. Honestly, there's nothing better.

Me too! I absolutely cannot sleep without a fan! I picked up that habit in childhood - my family was a madhouse, with the phone ringing off the hook, siblings fighting, mom putzing about, so I took to running a fan to drown out the ambient noise. 30 years later I still need it to sleep.

I have slept with a fan for years and all three of my sons and their wives all sleep with fans now. :)

When Mrs. Homie and I first moved in together (I know, naughty naughty!!), we both despaired of ever getting any sleep. She grew up always having a radio on, I grew up always having a fan on, and neither of us can sleep in dead silence. Fortunately she compromised a bit (after many fights) and now she can sleep either with a fan or without one. She doesn't do the radio thing any more (except on the rare occasions when I'm out of town without her, she does it for old times' sake).

Listening to waves crash, hard or gentle. The sound of water at all really.

I also love the sound of leaves rustling in the wind.

Loons, too. I could listen to loons all day.

My idea of heaven would be a cabin on waters edge with trees mostly all around so I can listen to all my calming noises all day long.

One day *sigh*

A steady, heavy rain. No thunder or lightning.

When my kitties cuddle

The fan at night (our room gets so stuffy)

sleepy baby cuddles

holding my DH's hand

a good book, a glass of wine and a bubble bath

My "huggy" pillow. I never wash the cover-I know, gross but I like that it smells like me and I swear I don't stink-it's all squished in the middle from me squeezing it.

The wind whistling and making the windows rattle on blustery nights. Better than a sleeping pill.

Favorite books that I re-read over and over again.
