Okay, last night while bathing Elliot...I noticed that one testicle was quite larger than the other. I would say one was the size of a grape and one was the size of a small gumball. I noticed it because at first, it looked like only one was descended. Oh, he was also in the bath when I noticed.

So, DH says that is normal and not a big deal but it still worried me. I looked it up on the web and didn't really find an answer. You should have seen some of the things the search returned. :earseek:

Anyway, can anyone confirm that this is normal? He is 21 months and has had several checkups and everything has been fine. I was going to check him again when he woke up this morning but he is being lazy this morning. ;)

UPDATE:

I was feeling around there more today and taking a closer look :magnify: when he was laying down and could notice a bulge right above his scrotum on the same side as the enlarged testicle. I then freaked out and called his doctor to make an appointment. She referred us to a urologist without seeing him and he has an appointment for May 21st. I really wish we could see him before that, but that was their first available opening. I will let you all know what happens. I'm going to be a nervous wreck until then. :worried:

Thank you for all the responses! I appreciate it. :grouphug:

I think that's normal. I remember worrying about that with my sons, but every time they had a check- up everything was fine according to their Ped. If it still worries you, ask the Ped. at the next check-up.

It's normal. If you're really worried, call your ped. I'm sure all they'll say is "it's normal".

I have been right where you are with the worrying. Both of my boys were like that, but both DH and their doctor assured me it was normal. Mention it at his 2 yr check-up if you are still concerned.

Ya know, ****s aren't exactly the same either!

I agree with the posts I've read so far: normal, check w/Ped.

Just curious - Is the larger blue/purple? Someday he'll need therapy when he learns that people have been discussing his gentials on-line:blush:

Its normal - check your husband's some time too - you will see that they are the same and that sometimes they switch which one is higher at any given moment. Ask your Ped. But I think you can relax about it.

If the testicle is blue, call your ped. ASAP. If it'e jut the size difference and it's going to worry you, call to ease your mind.

I don't mean to worry you but keep an eye on it. My son was in the bath tub when I noticed that "one of these things is not like the other" - turned out that he had a hernia - very common in little boys but his incarcerted and he needed emergency surgery. He may be fine but better safe than sorry I say - I wouldn't want anyone to end up in the "emergency" boat like he did.

It isn't blue at all and I checked this morning and they are both hiding so I couldn't see if they had changed this morning.

Julie, how old was your son when you found his hernia? I'm thinking since E is 21 months and has been checked several times it wouldn't be a hernia. Those are caused by a looping of the intestine down into the testicular cavity and I think they are present from birth. I had thought of that but it seems odd since he is almost 2 and it has never been detected. That is why I am wondering how old your son was when you found his.

My son was 5 when they found his hernia. The other was 0nly 7 weeks old. You can't rule out hernia just because it wasn't found earlier.

DS was 2 months when his hernia was discovered (by ME!) and he also had hydroceles (had surgery at 3 1/2 mo). On the other hand, DH's younger brother was 13 when his was discovered!

Oh great! So is it something I should call about today or is it something I should just mention at his 2 year check up in a few months?

Okay now getting scared. I have a 4 month old baby boy. What are the signs of a hernia? Not saying that he has any, I would like to know what DH and I need to look for just in case.

Please don't freak out!

My eldest son had a hydrocele, and it went away without surgery. My other 2 sons haven't had a problem yet. The first was a little premature, so that may have had something to do with it.

We did have to be on alert at that point for a hernia. Thankfully it never occurred. I'm sure if you ask your Ped they will give you a list of symptoms to look for in your child if you are concerned.

Jacob's appear to be different sizes sometimes because one of them retracts. It just disappears up in his body sometimes. Apparently that's okay and something that he'll outgrow. They were undescended when he was born, probably because he was premature, but they've both come down now. Oddly enough, I think that what fixed it was me getting pregnant. We were about to have to have it treated surgically when they finally dropped. But one of the possible treatments is HcG therapy, and that hormone is excreted in your breastmilk when you're pregnant, so that is probably what "fixed" him.

The hernia appeared as a bulge in his groin when he cried. Freaked me out!

Hernias are something they check for at each appointment.

MosMom - to answer your question my son was four years old when is hernia first appeared and there was no other sign of it beforehand.

Oh great..now I have something else to worry about and ask the pedi about when I take James in for his 2 mos check up next month. It was bad enough when we took him in the very first time and found out that only one ball had dropped. Fortunately, the other one has started to drop (according to the pedi) and it seems like everything is still normal around here. So far....

Sounds like a hydrocele (water in that area) to me! Nothing to get your panties in a bunch about, but definitely mention it to your Pediatrician. I would place a call today, talk to the nurse to let her know what you saw/noticed, and they'll proceed from there. They may want you to come in to rule out hernia...etc... or they may ask you questions and tell you to come in at your scheduled appointment. Either way you'll have peace of mind that you talked to your doctor's office about it.
