Wegmans food stores

1) The smaller Wegmans that still exist in the Rochester area surprise me. They don't carry much in terms of what makes Wegmans unique, so I rarely shop at them. Very few prepared foods, virtually no ethnic foods and very little in the organic "section".
2) They were the first grocery store in Buffalo (not sure about Rochester) that offered a pre-made Kosher food department.
3) Their prices can be higher, but shop the loss-leaders and keep track of what's competative, and you'll be good.
4) The babaganoush on their olive bar is the best I've ever had. Then I found out how many calories were in it.....

I remember when the very first Wegmans opened in NJ just north of Princeton--what a MOB SCENE!!! I think every person who had moved to NJ from NY or PA descended on that store on opening day. We were there around 5:00pm after a lot of the hubub had calmed down and saw Danny Wegman straightening cans on a shelf!

The one in Mt. Laurel had a mob scene, traffic jams and cops galore. This one in Cherry Hill had a fairly uneventful opening day (I was there). The plaza is still pretty new and most stores aren't in there yet. The construction has been going on for a long time (demolishing the racetrack, putting in this plaza) so many still think its under construction.

I went opening day in Cherry Hill, there was maybe 40 people in line for opening bell and I was in and out in less than an hour.

I was wondering about that since the Mt. Laurel store opened not long ago and many from Cherry Hill have gone up to that one. I live in Cherry Hill and it takes me no more than 12 minutes door to door from my house to the Mt. Laurel store, so it isn't that far away. The Cherry Hill store is closer in miles but not much closer in travel time.

I'm really close to the Cherry Hill store. I can get there in about a 5 minute or less drive. It takes about 12-15 minutes to get to the Mt. Laurel one as well (295 traffic).

If I am out in Moorestown/Maple Shade I'll go to Mt. Laurel, but if I'm home, I'll go to Cherry Hill.

Yes, I would agree that if you venture into the Marketplace section, you could end up spending a lot more money than you had planned. Many times I planned to stop in for a just a few things and end up with a $70 bill because I'd gone into the Marketplace. I also agree that the subs are WONDERFUL as is the chinese food. I also like their wide variety of cheeses. Nature's Marketplace has a varied selection of organic foods. In comparing their grocery prices to other stores, I believe they're comparable. And if you think it gets crowded on the weekends, you haven't seen anything until you've been there on Christmas Eve day. Not only is the store crowded, but it's almost impossible to get a parking spot.

I don't find them "upscale" even though they offer a lot of upscale items. IMHO, they are cleaner, friendlier and better organized than their competition in my area. They also like to sell a lot of home grown items in season.

Give them a try! If the store just opened, it's probably still packed from all the curious people! (and they're probably all transplants from the Rochester/Buffalo area)

I have to strongly agree here. Now, I have to be VERY careful when I shop there, because I will buy everything in sight. Some of their prices are excellent and unless you are buying right from the farmers market, you can't beat their produce for quality. Their bakery is pretty darn terrific too...(I'm currently eating a piece of their sourdough pecan raisin bread for my lunch!)
My suggestion is just don't go shopping there hungry, their displays are top notch!

I hear ya!! Not only holidays, but almost every day, the parking lot at the Hanover Twsp. Wegman's is packed full!! It's worth the walk from the farthest parking space, though! :thumbsup2

I've been able to shop at Wegman's as long as I can remember. Though they have some wonderful upscale stuff, they also have the freshest produce, meats and deli I have ever experieinced. The food will keep for a good long time over the other supermarkets stuff. As for competative prices they sure are on the staples. So long as you don't get drawn into the high end specialty food you should find that you saved onthe everyday items.

We went this afternoon th the new Cherry Hill, NJ store. Very Nice. Unfortunately, I didn't see much of the store because I got caught up in the marketplace section! 1 hour and $80 bucks later, DH and DS were "twitchy" and it was time to leave. We never got to the rest of the store. :rotfl: So much for the budget discipline!

Lots of samples and lots of people. Cindy B: remind me to go with your DH next time! :) We hit the afternoon crowds. I think most people were a little overwhelmed. Plus, with all the samples given out, there were lots of cart hit and runs going on.

Best buy, although expensive: Saga blue cheese with a caramel, craisin, apple, walnut topping. Oh my Lord! so good ( and pricy, but what a treat!) We picked up a bunch of stuff for dinner tonight and all day tomorrow.

I'll be done school this week and will head back in during the morning when the crowds are low to really check it out. But it seems that what everyone said is true-great store. As far as the prepared food prices...yes it wasn't cheap, but I feel they are comparible to other places that offer similar items and the quality appeared high. The staff couldn't have been nicer. Dh wondered if some of the crowd was due to employees. You couldn't move without running into staff.

I also really enjoy shopping at Wegman's. Unfortunately the one closest to us is surrounded by new expensive houses whose owners have money to burn so the prices are higher than Giant and Weis. I though higher costs were the norm for Wegman's since they do offer such nice produce, convinience foods, etc, but a coworker of DH's said the Wegman's by him (Hanover Twp) is actually cheaper than Giant! One of these days will make the long trek up there and check it out for ourselves. For now I just stop by to pick up specific things, like their hot fresh French bread. Yummy!

My DH has been asking to go to Wegmans. Is there any difference between the Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel stores? They're both about the same distance for us, 1/2 hour. I've been reading this thread out loud to him and he wants to go tomorrow!

That would make a great DIS meet, go to Wegmans!

After looking at all these posts, I went to Wegmans for a few things. We decided to have "dinner" there. DH and I split a 14 inch sub for $6.99 and brought half home! In our store there is a dining area above the shopping area. Is this usual in other stores?

My husband works at the Wegmans meat center here in Rochester, NY. He said that all the newer Wegmans stores are being build in more upscale areas. Around here it's probably the most popular grocery store with the best prices for food. Our stores in Rochester are not all super stores with the restraunts and play areas inside, although they seem to be updating them all the time. As employers go, they are a good company to work for. The founder Robert Wegman just pasted away a short time ago. The funeral was a big deal here ,as he contributed alot to the community. The company is run now by his son Danny and his grand daughter Colleen Wegman.

Our Wegmans has an eating area as well. I just brought a sub home tonight too- can't beat that price and lunch tomorrow too! Sometimes when we are too tired for a real night out and don't feel like worrying about babysitting- my husband and I will put the kids in the Fun Center and get some sushi and whatever else looks good and eat upstairs. Its a fun, fairly cheap way to spend a little time together!

I shop at the Wegman's in Hanover Twp., and the prices are better than those at Giant on most things. Only problem is Giant is closer to me (West Bethlehem) than Wegman's, so I go to Giant when I need a few things. I used to shop Weis/King's (Westgate Mall) but that store is absolutely filthy and terribly understaffed. I was so happy when Wegman's opened up!!

I'm surprised that the prices differ from store to store....do you shop in Allentown or Palmer Twp?

The store layout is the same. The only exception is one snack aisle. In Mt. Laurel, the potato chips/pretzels/tortilla chips are in one section. In Cherry Hill, this aisle is about two rows away on the right. The section in the Cherry Hill store is labeled isotonic water which isn't really chips/tortilla pretzels.

As for other posters, this one has a eating section as well.

I totally bypass the marketplace area. I get the bread and lunchmeat and thats it. I don't get suckered in and do stuff. If I am getting rolls/bagels I do exactly that and move on!

I LOVE Wegmans!! Was just there yesterday. The one I go to is in Princeton, NJ, takes about 20 min to get there. I can literally walk to a Genuardi food store across the street from me, but I do my big food shopping at the Wegmans. :goodvibes

Sorry, if this has already been posted...didn't take the time to read through all of the posts on this thread!!!!

I went there for about the 3rd time last month...I live between two of them. Well, my daughter (5yrs) was so excited to be left in the kids room. I was prepared to pay, but the lady just gave me my beeper, after I had to fill-out some forms, and said see you...you have up to 1.5 hrs!! That was incredible. Of course, I didn't leave my DD there for 1.5 hrs, but she would have been okay. There were a few other girls/boy near her age in there. She had fun!! I would have been okay too. I went from one side through to the food market section. Yummy breads, pies, cakes etc....

So for me to say that I enjoyed my grocery shopping experience (the only shopping I normally dread), is two thumbs up for Wegman's!

Isn't that the best?? My DS loves going into the WKids Center! I've always been very impressed with the caregivers too....I've discovered that many of them (in the store I shop anyway) are education students at the local community college. It's nice to know that they don't just throw anyone into the kids club to work...they actually hire people that like (and are good with) kids!

My store used to give you 1.5 hours, but because it's so popular, they've dropped it down to an hour. My friends and I (and sometimes My Dh and I) will often have coffee or lunch and it's so nice to have a place to put the kids!

We're heading over to the new Cherry Hill store in a little while. Anybody need me to pick up anything for them? :teeth:
