I'm in the process of planning a weekend trip to Philly. It will be 2 adults and 2 teen boys. It is over a 6 hour drive for us, so we will be arriving on a Friday night, we will have tickets to the Franklin Institute on Saturday, and driving home Sunday. Any ideas for other activities or hotels that would be a good fit?

Without knowing what your boys are into or what time of year you're going it's harder to give you ideas.

The Franklin institute has a great robotics and a great Jurassic World special exhibit going on now that you should look into if you're going soon. If you're going in the future, look into their special exhibits. They're an extra cost to get in, but some of them are worth it.

If you're not going in the winter (or don't mind the cold) and your kids are into nature/animals, Philadelphia has a great zoo.

If you're in to history - Betsy Ross House, Liberty Bell, Constitution center, Independence Hall and many other places are downtown. There are historical walking tours that you can do.

Philadelphia museum of art is great - plus it has the Rocky statue and steps.

I'm guessing with two teen boys this isn't going to be high up on your list, but you never know, so Philadelphia has a nice Ballet too.

Thank you, it will be in February and we're going especially for the Jurassic World exhibit. Zoo is out because I don't want to be that cold, haha. They have mentioned the Rocky statue and the Liberty Bell, are these just walk up and take a picture or do I need tickets? I'll be purchasing timed tickets for the Jurassic exhibit. And the Reading Terminal Market looks great!

I'm actually a ballet teacher!!! but it won't be happening this trip...

You don't need tickets for either. :)

Yeah unless we get a really unusual warm spell I'd skip the zoo in February.

You don't need tickets for the Liberty Bell or Rocky steps/statue. The Rocky statue is a walk (or run up the steps like in the movie for teenage boys) and take a picture. You don't need tickets for the Liberty Bell, but you will need to go through security so budget time for that. There are also some exhibit type things in the Liberty Bell building that you may or may not want to look at.

The Rocky statue is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. So while it's really cool to see, that's about all there is to it unless you want to go in the museum. Though if you're going to be at the Franklin Institute, it's a short walk from there, so you might as well do it. The Academy of Natural Sciences is also right there.

Reading Terminal Market is cool, but you probably won't spend a ton of time there...grab lunch and then go. It's in the heart of center city, but not a ton for your kids to do right in that area, unless there's something cool going on inside the Convention Center (check its' calendar of events...depending on when in Feb you go, the Philly Auto Show may be going on, which is AWESOME if you like cars).

The Liberty Bell is right there with Independence Hall and the Betsy Ross House. That's a 3 mile ride from the Franklin Institute, so you'll want to grab a cab. If you like history, definitely worth your time. Right in that area is also the Philadelphia Mint, where money is made...literally. You can take a free tour, and that may be fun.

The zoo is really neat, but yeah, it'll be cold...and the zoo is in a really bad part of town, so you'd better get a cab right too and from the front gate.

There is also South Street, which is where a lot of "hip" (not sure what the right word is here) places are. Your boys may be a bit young for it yet, as there are a lot of bars, but there are also a lot of unique shops...it's the stretch from about 8th St down to 2nd Street. Jims Cheesesteaks is right there at 4th and South...best cheesesteaks in Philly...nevermind Pats or Gino's, Jims is far better. Night life can get...uh...strange, so best to visit in daytime. It's close enough to the Liberty Bell that you can walk, it's 6 blocks. It's a safe walk, as you're walking through Olde City, which is the high rent district.

As for hotels, there are plenty around. Look for ones near the Art Museum, PA Convention Center, Olde City, or City Hall. Convention Center, City Hall or Olde City will be your best bet for safe areas. There's a Sheraton right across the street from Convention Center that's really nice.

Have fun!!

All of this.

If I were you I would do the art museum steps and see the Rocky statue while you are at the Franklin Institute or at the end of the day.

I wouldn't do South Street in this cold but I agree Jim's are the best cheesesteaks!

I would definitely try to get to Reading Terminal Market. It's probably my favorite place but I love to eat. We do the auto show every year and have lunch at DiNic's at the terminal. Best sandwiches ever!

On Sunday before leaving I would do the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall . If it's in February definitely do the auto show.

<--- waxing nostalgically....how I miss that area (didn't think I'd say that when I lived there). The auto show here in Atlanta stinks compared to Philly. From 1982 to 2014 I think I only missed one or two shows. I used to live on South Street, so was a frequent customer of Jims. Also went to Famous' Deli, which is 4th and Bainbridge (one block off South St)...awesome deli sandwiches and killer cookies.

If it's not too cold, I'd still say go to the zoo. In my opinion, it's one of the best in the US.

The Sixers have home pages against the Heat on February 11th and the Wizards on the 24th. The Flyers have home games on the 11th (Sharks) and 25th (Penguins)

Also, the National Constitution Center/Independence Hall/Liberty Bell.

Art Museum

Or you can take the 32 bus toward Broad-Carpenter, get off at Chestnut, and switch to the 42 bus towards Penn's Landing and get off at Chestnut & 6th.

All of the suggestions above are excellent. Philly is an amazing city for food, so you'll have no trouble finding anything good (yes, Jim's is the best!). I'll point out some of the lesser known "touristy" things to do:

If you decide to do the mint, cross the street on to Arch and visit Ben Franklin's grave--most people don't know that it's there.
One Liberty Place now has an observation deck--great views of the city.
If the weather is not too cold, I love the Shofosu Japanese House in Fairmount Park. The tours are interesting and the house is gorgeous.
The Federal Reserve Building has a free exhibit called Money in Motion. If you're at the Constitution Center, take a walk around the corner to 6th Street and check it out.
The African American Museum is on 7th and Arch, and the Jewish History Museum is on 5th and Market.

I work in Old City where all of the historic sites are, so if you have any questions or need help when you're in the area, feel free to PM...I can run out and point you in the right direction! Have fun!!

I felt the same way when I lived out west...not a fan of the winters, but I really do love living here!

Thank you so much everyone! I have a lot to look into, and I really appreciate all of your opinions. It is more helpful to me than just the website info.

Eastern State Penitentiary is a fascinating place to tour. It was beautiful and grim and a bit spooky all at once. DS enjoyed seeing it when we spent some time in Philadelphia.
We spend one weekend every year in Philadelphia, and this is #1 on my list. However, I never seem to leave the hotel (dance competition).

Great suggestion!! Not quite downtown, but awesome idea.
