Wedding Shower Invite Question

Is there an etiquette rule as to whether or not the shower invitations can be sent out before the wedding invitations? I have looked on the web and all the sites say that the shower invites need to go out four weeks before the shower and the wedding invites need to go out eight weeks before the wedding but I can't find any info on whether or not it is unacceptable for guests to get the shower invite before the wedding invite?
And I don't know if this matters or not but there were no save the date cards.

I got my FDIL shower invite before the wedding invite. Everyone invited knew they were getting married. I don't remember how long afterwards the wedding invites were, but I know they were sent out in respect to the dates of each event.

Thank you! I pretty much told my friend that it was okay (I am the MOH) but I thought I would check with the DIS just to get some more opinions.

We'll be doing the save the date, shower invite, and then official wedding invite. I have poeple coming in from all over the country, so we had to do it that way.
