I think that wedding gift amount calculator was made up from a greedy bride and groom! It says I need to spend $240 on a wedding when we spent $100.

Most everyone else we know at this wedding also spent $100.

We are pretty well off and over the years have gotten many a wedding invitation from people we barely know in hopes that we will respond with a gift. We respond with a note (on engraved correspondence cards), declining the invitation and wishing them much future happiness. Yeah, I'm pretty sure when you get an invitation from Bob and Diane's kid and your reaction to the invitation is "Bob and Diane had kids?" its because there is an expectation.
