What is the going rate for a cash/check wedding gift where you live? And where do you live? Does geographics play a part in the amount???

Just curious, as I am going to a wedding for the first time in over 5 years. Five years ago we were paying $200-250 as a gift from both DH and me. I really hope it isn't higher now. We live in NJ, close to the Jersey shore.

Thats about normal for this area- anywhere between 200-300- more if its family or a close friend

We did $500 for a cousin. NJ here.
Regular wedding of a distant connection- (like the child of a friend) I would do the $250.

Uh oh. We went to a wedding in May and we gave them $200. We are from rural way north jersey, but the wedding was in Passaic county and the reception in Essex county. Now I'm thinking that maybe I should have given them more.

Southwestern CT here...Fairfield county.

Co-workers/friends for DH & I $200
Closer friends probably $250-$300
Family $500

$250 for "regular folk".

$500+ for family.

Maybe I am just some dumb southern hillbilly but do you guys actually give that much money as wedding gifts. I can honestly say I have never heard of that. May I ask why so much?? I mean I hardly spend that much on my own kids for birthday and Christmas!

No matter where the wedding takes place the answer should always be the same.. Whatever you can afford..

Your question is exactly why I asked if geographical location played a part.

Here, in NJ, we usually try to cover what the expenditure was per person as a wedding guest, to give the couple for their gift, and it can be pricey.

Thanks for all the responses. The bride is a very close co-worker, so I think I will do $250.

Maybe I only know poor folk...........but here the average is $25 to $50! No wonder it costs more to live in the east!

:rotfl: We are NOT rich, but I don't think we could give under $200 and feel comfortable.

I would love for $50 to be the norm though;)

WOW! If I ever have a second wedding, I'm going to invite all of you!!!! We don't do that much around here. How much do you pay per guest at a reception?

open bar plus sit down meal around $180 a person at the places my sister is looking at on Long Island.

I guess I'm cheap. $150 is the most I'll go and that's for family. Anyone else would get $50-75........and I live in Jersey!

Oh......I would probably give my own kids more than that, but no one else. I don't take into consideration the cost of the reception, as I give what I can afford. And if DH doesn't find a job soon, my gift limits will be dropping quite a bit!

You all must drink ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:

:rolleyes1 who us?
But yes open bar is another regional thing. We were really surprised to go to a wedding with a cash bar! - my uncle went and got his card back and took some money out!:rotfl2: he said it was to pay for his drinks.
It's just what is the norm in our area.
