We went on a DVC tour and I'm am disappointed

Oops. I read that wrong.

I guess you can't delete a post but I have edited the post.

Sorry.

and I don't know if maybe I'm missing something or the sales guy was just having a bad day?

My family and I just got home today from a 10 night stay at the All Stars Resort. We were approached by a DVC rep (he was really cool) and he talked us into touring SSR and talking to a sales rep.

When we got to SSR and finally met with our sales rep it just seemed like he didn't want us to buy into DVC. :confused3 Everything he had to say to us was negative, like "I know for a fact if you don't sign today you wont buy DVC at all".He also implied that we couldn't afford DVC. Where he came up with that I don't know? I mean really how did he know that? I never make big purchases without sitting on it a couple of days. All we wanted was someone to really explain the whole process and show us numbers so we can see if this is something that we want to buy into.

I understand that it's "no pressure" but geez he didn't try to sell us a DVC contract. So now I'm trying to figure all of this out on my own, which in the end I will gather everything I need to make a decision and we are about 85% sure we will buy dvc, just have to figure everything out.

What was your experience with dvc sales reps?
As Brian said, it's possible for them to know A LOT about you. Disney has your visit habits, restaurant usage, etc. They also have access to your credit info in such a situation. All timeshares I know of also have a min annual income requirement to sell, not sure how DVC falls in this area. IMO these are not especially high pressure techniques but they are not the norm for DVC, at least in years past. I've predicted they'll have to change for HI to sell, we'll see.

As far as the if you don't buy today you won't ever buy its just not true. We did the tour Dec 2008 and didn't buy in till March 2010. We did(I did) our research first, had a stay on friends points and from there my DH finally saw the DVC value in the impoved accomodations and how we can go away every year for a week plus depending on when we decide to go. I suggest you do your research, figure out how to pay for it (financed or full payment) and then make your decision. You should also research the different resorts. We chose OKW as many of the other resorts don't appeal to our tastes in accomodations. What ever you decide Good Luck!

sounds like my guides script...if you dont buy today you will never buy...although he was pleasant...low and behold five months later...I called back and made my purchase...we too were staying at pop century and he may have played on that string for a little bit during the presentation....

A reminder that referrals are not permitted on the DIS at this time. We only allow referrals if there is also a financial advantage for the buyer.

Also we do not allow the personal phone/contact info for CM/Guides. Please use the generic sales phone numbers.

The DVC section of the disboards is definitely the best place to get questions answered :thumbsup2

There's also another site that has a great primer on DVC. There's a section called DVC for Beginners that really steps you through the basics. Can I post them here? Well, I'll give it a try and see. dvcnews.com

We were looking at a 100pt contract at SSR for 9000.00, hence the 900.00 down payment. Also they are offering no closing fees and 100 additional points for UY 2009.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the kind words. I will be checking into resell also, just because I am that frugal and want to make sure I'm getting the best deal that is right for my family. So far we've been every year sense 2004 and have stayed at the value resorts and one mod. And the reason we've stayed at the Value resorts was for the theming for our young children but as they get older we will be able to stay at the delux resorts.

I'll be around and asking a ton of question once I really get into researching all the DVC resorts.

Thanks a bunch everyone.

We were staying at All Star Music when we took the tour, and subsequently bought into DVC. We want to stay at all the WDW hotels, so we started with the kids choice. I know that the guide has the information about where you are staying, but they have no idea why you may be staying there, so for this particular guide to make these assumptions, it would have caused me to walk out the door too.

To the OP if it is SSR you are looking at then definately look at Resale,SSr contracts are going in the mid $60's at the minute,we paid $68 18 months ago.
As for the CM,maybe that is their technique but I have to say that the 3 tours we have done, our CM certainly was totally different. Having down a tour for Vistana & Orange County Club, these were both a nightmare & really stressful!:scared1:As for the if you don't buy now... it is a proven statistic that the percentage who leave without buying very rarely come back ours used a different tactic in that we had to make our mind up before the end of our vacation to get the incentives.
SD:thumbsup2

Did the guide know that you were staying at one of the All Stars? He may have been passing judgement based on that (totally out of line!!), but I think PP are correct it was just a sales tactic. Was it a young guy? He sounds like he may be new.

I know when I did my online tour that the guide made a few comments that almost sounded like he was surprised we can afford it... espeically after he got our dates of birth and found out we are only 23 and 26. He also seemed really surprised when we were both approved for the better financing and told him to go with a 5 year payment plan instead of 10 (I figured if we can easily afford to pay it in 5 then we might as well get it done with).

I'm almost glad I didn't wait until after the October trip and do the tour if this is how guides treat people staying at values. Originally we would have been staying at pop and they would have seen immediately how young we are (and DH looks younger then 26, we can both easily pass for college students). As for why would be staying in Pop if we could afford this? Because the other 7 members of my family that are going wouldn't be able to afford a more expensive place comfortably and we wanted to stay together.

....

Hey cool!
I bought when I was in my 20s as well :)
I figure if God willing I'll still have at least 40 something years left in me. And I only financed about 2 years and then paid everything off.
But our guide then never looked at us funny. Altho a year later he did jumped over to Marriott timeshare... :rotfl:

I'm also looking 100points at SSR (I'm waiting for ROFR). I'm paying 66/pt. You could do even better if you put in the effort. We decided that 66/pt was a fair price and didn't want to take the time and energy to save 200-300 dollars.
It's a buyer's market out there. Tons of SSR for sale and many 100 point contracts!

We're in our 20's and bought in 2008. We're so fortunate to have paid cash and look fowward to the many years we have left on our BLT pts!

We just bought direct recently and I am in my late 20's and DBF is in his early 30's. Paid cash for the 1st one and financing the add-on. Along with PP's just shows you can be at any stage in life and financial situation. Just sad that any sales person makes assumptions or tries to make something out of it that isn't.
To the OP or anyone else looking to become members do as much research as you can - the DIS is awesome :thumbsup2, and so is DVCnews.com. Both times I purchased both guides commented that I really knew what I was talking about so didn't try to add any more info than what I needed to get the contracts going. And if that person you talked to on site would be assigned your guide ask to switch since he didn't make a very good 1st impression.

Good luck with your research and decision! :)

He just kept telling us that the majority of people who buy dvc pay cash but if we couldn't "afford" it we were welcome to finance through disney. He went on to tell us about the high down payment we would have to make(900.00) and so on. I think it was the way he was stressing the word afford. He just really was stressing how expensive dvc was. I don't know maybe I am just being sensitive or something.
A couple years ago, I had a guide do the exact opposite: He kept showing us month payment figures, although we already told him we would pay cash. He seemed to have a set presentation, and was not listening to us.

That's probably the difference of a couple of years in the economy. A couple years ago, Disney was able to package and sell the mortgages at a profit. Nearly everyone qualified, because credit was free and easy. And a lot of people financed.

Fast forward just a few years and Disney is knee deep in defaulted contracts. They can't sell the mortgages anymore and must hold them. Not everyone who walks through the door qualifies, because although Disney can repossess, they need to make at least enough money off the transaction to handle the transaction fees both ways if they do. They are caught between a LOT of inventory to move (three resorts currently selling and Hawaii coming fast) and a situation where fewer people can purchase.

Hence the smaller contracts being sold by Disney and the push for cash transactions (cash in hand for Disney right now is way better than holding a note).

Wow. I'm shocked by how bad your experience was - and how bad mine could have been. We bought in when we were both in our 20s, and happened to be staying at POP for that particular trip. And yes, we got the financing through Disney.

Basically, our circumstances were really similar to yours, except this was when the minimum was 160 points. And for some reason, we didn't get any garbage. It may have helped that we'd already decided that if the cost worked out to less than or equivalent to what we had been spending for the past few years (and plan on spending for the next 50!), we'd buy.

Even when I had to ask for a ride to POP to get my checkbook to make the downpayment (oops... I swear I meant to bring it with me), they were really nice about it and drove me there and back. Maybe I was just lucky, or maybe you were just unlucky, but it doesn't seem like they make it a practice of discouraging people from buying.

I'm really sorry to hear that your rep made you feel that way. This is the opposite feeling that you will have after you purchase. After all, this is why all of us pay so much (although I got a great price) to be a DVC member, unmatched service!

Dont feel defensive after you sign the line. The next cast member you will meet will make you feel at home.....Guaranteed!
