We went on a DVC tour and I'm am disappointed

He's playing the odds with the sales technique he took; it is possible that it has worked well for him in the past.

dh decided to go though the first guide (I think just to show him that we were serious about buying in)

That about sums it up. Welcome home, despite the rocky start!

and I don't know if maybe I'm missing something or the sales guy was just having a bad day?

My family and I just got home today from a 10 night stay at the All Stars Resort. We were approached by a DVC rep (he was really cool) and he talked us into touring SSR and talking to a sales rep.

When we got to SSR and finally met with our sales rep it just seemed like he didn't want us to buy into DVC. :confused3 Everything he had to say to us was negative, like "I know for a fact if you don't sign today you wont buy DVC at all".He also implied that we couldn't afford DVC. Where he came up with that I don't know? I mean really how did he know that? I never make big purchases without sitting on it a couple of days. All we wanted was someone to really explain the whole process and show us numbers so we can see if this is something that we want to buy into.

I understand that it's "no pressure" but geez he didn't try to sell us a DVC contract. So now I'm trying to figure all of this out on my own, which in the end I will gather everything I need to make a decision and we are about 85% sure we will buy dvc, just have to figure everything out.

What was your experience with dvc sales reps?

That point made me laugh since DH and I first looked at DVC on our honeymoon in May 2008 and talked to the guide and such (did not do the tour in the end..from then on we would get mailings everyone once in a while and an occassional phone call....we were on the fence just not sure if it was worth it for us...

Fast forward in Sept 2009 we moved to North Florida and started thinking about it again and got a mailing saying BLT price was going up in two weeks so we decided to call up our guide and buy in (we were going to wait till we cruised in Oct 2009 to talk to the guide and buy in on board) but we would have missed the lower price....

In the end we bought 200 points before cruising and added on onboard for a toal of 300 points....

I have never been happier and even more glad we waited....

I take the point of view if you wait and are still wanting something chances are you will appreciate longer and not be as dissappoointed.

What was your experience with dvc sales reps?

Sorry you had a bad experience!! I have to say a few I meet at the parks were not very good either but when I got home after my trip we got information from someone else and he was amazing. Don't give up because there are good ones out there. If this is right for your family find a rep you are comfortable with. i found one and we actually just bought today. A year after I originally started talking with my rep. Never felt pressed or pushed it was a great experience! When the time is right for your family I hope you find a good one too! :)

Our sales person is Randy and he is great but...... I called yesterday to check into buying more points. Randy was out for the remainder of the day so I chose to speak to who ever was available. I didn't get the persons name but he acted like he didn't want to talk to me. He started out nice but then didn't seem real energized to assist.

OUCH! :scared1: Sorry you had such a bad CM! Our rep was the best :cool1: He was so good, we were bummed when he was promoted. :rotfl: I would call back and ask for another rep and tell them why. Good luck with your decision!

I thought that I would share some information about DVD that I got from some ASA's and a couple of Guides.

Disney cut the salaries for the Advance Sales Associates and Guides a year or so ago. Many are still upset over the changes, some left and some stayed.

Since then they have added outside contracted Guides and have activity hired Guides from other timeshare companies.

Guides only get paid full commission if they handle the entire sale. If your Guide isn't available, the assigned replacement Guide doesn't get paid a full commission, so some don't want to take the time.

The commission structure is different for active properties verses "sold out" properties. That's why they direct new buyers to the active properties.

Like all sales people, they get paid based on sales. Some Guides don't want to spend time with you if they don't feel that you aren't going to buy.

Disney makes a lot of money selling DVC loans to other companies. Currently they don't like the deals currently being offered so they are keeping all of the loans. They are doing credit checks and ratings in preparation of selling the loans in the future. Rated loans sell at a higher price and attract more buyers than unrated loans.

IMO over the last year or two, Disney has changed the way that they do business. In the past they worked to attract the repeat visitor to Disney Parks and they went out of their way to continue the Guide/Member relationship even after the sale. Today it seems that they have decided that there are plenty of newbies available and that with the correct advertising campaign, they don't need to depend on repeats to make a profit.

:earsboy: Bill

I bought my DVC this year for AKV after 4 ROFR. I would not buy from Disney for anything older than AKV if you don’t need financing. If you do go though Disney I would also hold off for a webcast for a better deal.

I am in sale and know what to expect from a good sales person. A good sales person does not have to be slick, fast talking or misleading. They do need to listen and respond with answers and solutions. I had a bad guide and asked for a new one. I met my first guide when I was staying at my sisters DVC at the AKV. I could not get him to return my calls or tell me why I should buy from him. My next guide was better at returning my calls but still could not tell me why I should buy from him. In the end I need to make my 11 month window for a December booking and got a good webinar special.

If you do go though Disney do not keep a bad rep, it just encourages bad behavior .

We bought resale and so originally did not have a guide assigned.

When we called to buy Aulani, they assigned us a guide...so far she has been really really great. We've called her alot of times, asking questions (once bumping up our point purchase so I'm sure she liked that ;) ) but we've been having problems with our paperwork and she's sent out a few sets w/o being grumpy about it.

I'm happy that we have her, and that she returns calls (sometimes while we're leaving her a voicemail!)

We had a very similar experience when we first looked into DVC in December 2008. At the time we were with our 4 month old son, who did not want to be sitting still listening to a sales pitch! At times during the meeting, we felt like you, that we had to convince the sales person that yes this was something that we could afford.....we didn't end up buying on that trip. Like you we wanted to think about it some more, and with us being Canadian we also had to take the exchange rate into consideration.

We decided to take another look at DVC this past December, and did so over the phone. We got a different guide who was very prompt in returning phone calls and making sure that all of our questions were answered. It was much more laid back being able to phone the guide or email him, and then process the information in our own home and at our own pace - we never felt pressured going this route.

Wow, sorry to hear that you had a less than optomistic experience! When we joined ten years ago, our guide was a big part of why it was so easy to make the decision to join. There was absolutely no pressure. In fact, he suggested we go have lunch, think it over. He said there was no pressure to buy today -- he knew we had just arrived on our honeymoon a day or 2 earlier and that we were still overwhelmed from that. We did go have lunch but we went right back after and signed what would be our first DVC contract. If you would like me to PM you with the name of my guide, I'd be happy to. He's wonderful, and you deserve to speak to someone like him. My mom joined DVC and of course used him as her guide, as well as our neighbors (they actually joined over the phone after speaking with him). Over the past 10 years we've added on 4 times, always using our original guide. We like to think of him as a friend. He's been very helpful and honest with us for ten years.

That is awesome that your guide is still there after 10 years. We loved our first guide from 10 years ago but he is long gone. We are now on our third guide since he left. We never here from her and I could not even tell you her name.

I know! I fear that one day I'll call to ask him a question, or to do an add on or something and he'll be gone :scared1: We just did an add on in February so we saw him then and then we stopped by to say a quick hello when we were there in May and thankfully he was still there. DVC just wouldn't feel to us the same without him.

Have a question for you guys...someone asked me and I had no answer. What happens if you do a tour, buy into DVC (give info, put down deposit) but then change your mind?? I had no answer. But figured that someone here might know.

There is a state mandated cancellation period. I think it is 10 days, but I am not sure. You'd need to netify Disney that you are cancelling, and they refund the deposit and cancel the contract.

We were pretty much set on buying DVC before we took the tour, but we had the most fantastic guide. Sorry your experience wasn't so great. Maybe he was having a bad day?

Thanks...figured there was some sort of 'cancellation period' but wasn't sure if it applied. She'll be glad to hear that. I think she'll probably end up keeping it but she wanted an out if her dh decided against it...strongly.

Most states have a set time, some are 5, 7 or 10. Out of the country there may be none. The clock starts ticking from when you sign or when certain required paperwork is delivered including the POS, whichever is later. It's actual days, not business days. DVC used to be 15 with a FL state requirement of 10, they changed that a few years ago.

Was this guide a former used car salesman? :rolleyes1

He probably did you a favor by making you run away as fast as you could. Take a breath and then try the Timeshare Store! Resale is much less expensive and you can buy into the property you are most attracted to, which may or may not be the ones currently for sale through Disney. (Just make sure you know the expiration date of the contract you buy. As you probably all ready know, the older DVC properties have earlier expiration dates than the newer ones.)

Hope we can all say "welcome home" soon if DVC is as good fit for your family.
