We want Aulani! Is Resale ok?

We want to add on points at Aulani. We already have CC resale points from 2018. Our plan is to do Aulani every other year, alternating with other DVC resorts.

We priced out direct points to get the blue card. Looking at resale points it is super tempting to get more bang for our buck.

What will we miss out on if we buy Aulani resale? Here is what I can think of:
  • No blue card
  • Can’t use points at Rivera. (Don’t care, we can use our CC points there if we really want to.)
  • No shopping discounts. (Have the Disney Visa so still get some discount, even if not as big.)
  • No future AP discounts. (We do not spend enough time at the parks to justify the AP. We are resort people.)
  • Can’t use points in DCL. (We can rent out the points and use the cash for DCL.)
What else can’t we do with resale that would justify the $10-15k price difference?

Based on your situation, nothing. The only thing to add, in case you were financing, is that direct allows you to purchase on your Disney Visa, and get 6 months of 0% financing…which can be spread out even more if you ask them if they will spread billing you at 30, 60, and 90 days..

Even then, it may not make up the difference…and of course, if paying cash, that is irrelevant.

No reason to buy direct. Start throwing out lowball offers $80-$90/pt. Good luck!

You are buying a property interest in Hawaii, which I have beaten to death in other threads. I wouldn't do this at all, unless you need Aulani priority.

Owning interests in all of these states can force probate in maybe 3 states, if something happens to you. This is a lot for a trip every few years.

There are other ways to do this, like buying in a trust. Maybe time to get local legal advice from your estate lawyer.

Many people own resale and direct at Aulani and love it. I have 600 points there, 400 resale and 200 direct.

Let me clarify some of the things you will miss out on, even though they may not be that big of a deal for you:

1) A sparkly pool bracelet.
2) Membership Magic events like sushi and macaron member events on property.
3) The biggest one for West Coasters: you will most likely not be able to also use the points at the Villas at the Disneyland Hotel (or future properties).
4) Access to the DVC member lounges in the parks.
5) Access to special locations, like Top of the World lounge at BLT and future resorts.
6) Access to limited edition DVC merchandise if buying through ShopDisney.
7) Buying resale is a drawn out pain and buying direct is quick and easy.
8) Aulani often offers good price incentives to member add ons for larger point purchases.

$10,000 over 38 years is $263/yr. Is it worth $263 a year (+time value of money) to lose out on those things? For many the answer is yes, for some the answer is no. Either way, spend as many days of your life in Hawaii as you can.

Can you please provide a link to that post? I would like to read it to educate myself. But yes, we want priority at Aulani since our travel times will be limited for the next 15 years.

We get the sparkly band, merchandise, member lounges with our CC points. We can get the new DVC tower with our CC points too.

I would make sure you find out how to probate from your home state in Hawaii, with local legal advice. There are plenty of posts here about the hoops people jump through in Florida. And Florida is much more straightforward than Hawaii in many ways. I would make sure I had a plan for that if I were buying in Hawaii. Since you already own in Florida, that seems like the obvious, less complicated route.

Ah, 2018 resale…

I’d go resale then because the current prices are so low.

Maybe take the savings and create a revocable living trust to avoid probate on any properties. Problem solved.

If you have a 2018 resale contract, then you are grandfathered blue card members and will not miss out on anything. As long as you keep whatever contract qualified you for blue card benefits, it doesn't matter if the Aulani points are resale.

I'm currently looking at picking up an Aulani contract via resale. As a So Cal resident, I like the idea of a few trips over in that direction to break things up. We grew up with Hawaii as our primary vacation destination, so it will really feel like going "home".

LOL less than 2 hours later 😂. Aloha neighbor!
Mahalo!

Honestly, I've been looking for a few days and was going to go with a smaller contract, but had 3 offers either declined or sold before my offer was made and a ton who wouldn't budge off their list price. Decided to just pay the extra few bucks and get the 75-point contract.

I grew up in SoCal too, and had some great family vacations in Hawaii. That’s one reason why I bought as well!

I think you secretly love Aulani. Book a trip. The trade winds are calling!

True, but there's no Swolphin...
There's way more than Swolphin. Off-site Disney has even more competitors, and more added all the time. I get this is a Disney forum, but there's lots of nice hotels (or timeshares) that aren't Disney.
