We want Aulani! Is Resale ok?

There's way more than Swolphin. Off-site Disney has even more competitors, and more added all the time. I get this is a Disney forum, but there's lots of nice hotels (or timeshares) that aren't Disney.
True, but they’re all kind of generic or bland. That said, there are plenty of nice ones in Hawaii as well…the Marriott down the beach from Aulani in Ko Olina is great.
But, let’s get back to talking about everyone’s favorite subject…probate!!! Your fans are demanding it! :)

I was involved in a three-state probate, and it was a nightmare. And this was with real assets in all of these places. For a 10K timeshare, it might not even be worth the hassle. You can see that in the foreclosures, a lot of them are recently deceased. Maybe the estate just decided not to go through the hassle, or didn't even know it existed?

Probate can be a beast, add in a few states, and yea, it's time to at least talk to a lawyer first. Heck, I think even Vero might take another probate from Orange County because it's another county?

This buy can be structured much better from the jump. Lots of choices.

I picked up a 125 point contract for $90pp. This was in February. I passed ROFR on 2/21 and will finally close at end of this week or start of next week. Just thought I would share my experience in case it is helpful.

We bought resale a couple years ago and never looked back. Worrying about probate when you are dead is waste of time. If you are that concerned, add multiple owners to the contract - wife and kids etc.

Buy resale

We want to add on points at Aulani. We already have CC resale points from 2018. Our plan is to do Aulani every other year, alternating with other DVC resorts.

We priced out direct points to get the blue card. Looking at resale points it is super tempting to get more bang for our buck.

What will we miss out on if we buy Aulani resale? Here is what I can think of:
  • No blue card
  • Can’t use points at Rivera. (Don’t care, we can use our CC points there if we really want to.)
  • No shopping discounts. (Have the Disney Visa so still get some discount, even if not as big.)
  • No future AP discounts. (We do not spend enough time at the parks to justify the AP. We are resort people.)
  • Can’t use points in DCL. (We can rent out the points and use the cash for DCL.)
What else can’t we do with resale that would justify the $10-15k price difference?
When you buy direct the points are automatically in your account. You may even have to pay annual dues for that use year.
The day I put in my down payment I got the points in my account. Hadn’t even signed any paperwork.
If you are financing Disney rates are better than other finance companies.

And to add to drawbacks of resale:
1. Can’t use points to book at VDH.
2. Probably can’t use points to book at the new Polynesian Tower if it’s in a separate association.
3. Can’t use points to stay in Epcot area resorts after 2042, now less than 20 years away.
4. No access to new Disneyland member’s lounge.

One other thing to add, if you can find it, is to maybe look for a subsidized dues contract. These can be harder to find, but will pay less dues over time, so may be more worth it up front.

Luckily my CC points get me everything but the member lounge.

Great! I have a mix of both direct and resale. Depending upon how you travel, I find that having a healthy amount of direct points, not just a few for the smaller benefits, opens up booking opportunities and length of stay.

I/we were able to pick up a small resale contract at $100/pp with the intention of using it every couple years at Aulani, and other wise to sleep around at DW.

Like others mentioned unless you have FOMO of the "extras" of buying direct, you can nearly get 2x the points in resale if come across the right contract.

Yes you can, but for me being able to book VDH and the new Polynesian Tower, and also Riviera, and the Epcot resorts post 2042, are factors worth considering.

Have you ever been to one of the on site member events? How is the sushi and macarons?

Yes I have, and they’re fun! The sushi and macarons were sublime..catered by Victoria and Albert! :) And the members only after party at the California Grill was beyond delicious! You wouldn’t believe the gift bag!
Actually, I do think the on-site events are worthwhile, even though many resale only owners scoff at them because they can’t attend. I bought direct mostly to stay at Riviera, but all these smaller extras have value for me and are a total blast. I also bought the Sorcerer’s annual pass for DVC owners for my wife and I during that narrow window when they resumed sales a year and a half ago. That was worthwhile too.

My wife and I definitely want to check out the Aulani member events this summer, Star View Station in October, and TOTWL during fireworks next March.

It is fun feeling like “part of the club”.
