We are going by train for sure. First it was the auto train and we were going to rent a house. But now we are staying on site. ( Thanks to here) Is there a train that goes to Disney? We live in NJ.

Dumb question can we take the autotrain without our car?

The train stations are in Orlando and Kissimmee, Both about 20 miles from Disney. Autotrain does take passengers with no vehicle.

The autotrain leaves from VA. You can take amtrak from NY. Double check the train may not be any cheaper than flying. Remember Disney provides free transfers from the airport, you'll have to pay something like $100 for transfers from the train station to WDW.

I just checked, the train from NYC takes almost 24 hours and costs around $250 R/T.

There are two trains per day between Newark or Trenton, NJ and Orlando or Kissimmee, Florida - the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star . The Meteor is slightly faster of the two. Both leave from Penn Station in New York originally, and both have full dining and lounge cars, 2-3 sleepers, and coaches.

Prices can vary, depending on how many people are already reserved on that train for that particular departure. So, best advice is to "play" around with different combinations of trains, accomodations (coach or sleeper) and dates.

You CANNOT take Auto Train without a vehicle (car, van, truck, motorcycle, etc). This policy has been in place since Amtrak started the service back in the 80's. Amtrak's New York to Florida trains will be more convenient (and far less expensive) anyway.

Transportation from the train station to WDW won't cost anywhere near $100; cab fare is about $25-$30 (I think) from Kissimme. Shuttles are available from Orlando and rental cars are "on call". If you want to really be frugal, just take the bus from either station for $1.50.

I was assuming a car service would cost about the same as from MCO or around $100 R/T.

I checked the Mears Taxi fare estimator. It looks like the one way fare would be around $30, $60-$70 R/T.

My point is the train fare, together with the cost to get from the train station to WDW, will probably cost more than airfare.

We use Amtrak exclusively, we board in Alliance Ohio and that train takes us to Washington DC, from here with a short layover, we catch the north-south train south to Kissimmee. Kissimmee is closer to WDW, cab fare is 35.00-38.00 plus tip one way. We usually go reserved coach and for myself and wife, round trip, its usually in the neighborhood of 450.00 total plus the cab at the end. For us its approx. 27 hours but delays makes it alittle longer. If we book early, we get a roomette for the DC to Kissimmee leg, good prices are around 187.00 for both of us and that little roomette includes all your meals, coffee, juices and upper and lower berths to sleep. We've gone the whole way in coach we no problems, recling seats are comfortable, bring a blanket, they provide a small pillow but for privacy and a bunk, roomette is the ticket. We sometimes don't have a roomette when we book late and the price is sky high but we ask if any sleepers are available when we board in DC and they offer them on a first come basis discounted real cheap.

DS is a special needs child and flying is out of the question. The train is the way to go for us. I need to look into the one leaving from, NY thanks!

The train station in Orlando is located downtown Orlando. It would cost you approximately $30.00 to get to the airport.
