Hope everyone who celebrates had a great Thanksgiving! We went to St. Pete for DH's sister's wedding the day after and had a glorious Airbnb. We had a wonderful time on the west coast overall. On Saturday we attended an art exhibit called
Fairgrounds St. Pete which I would 100% recommend if you're in the area. It's like a trippy but family-friendly installation project with elements of an escape room (without the need to escape, just a fun mystery to solve if you want, or you can just look at the art). April was a flower girl in the wedding and I was a bridesmaid so I expect I'll be able to share some professional pics soon.
Day 3, Part 3
We left Diamond Horseshoe unsure of where to start our evening, but April seemed to have something in mind. She took my hand and we started walking.
And walking.
I urged Dad to walk behind us with the stroller, sure that at any moment she would stop and demand to be carried or put in the stroller. We started in Frontierland, went under the walkway to Adventureland, and just kept going. She was very interested in everything going on around her, and it helped that by now the crowds had thinned out so there were less people to be overwhelmed by.
We entered the hub and went right on through it to the bridge to Tomorrowland. At this point we’d pretty much walked clear across the park. I wish I knew what was going on in her mind as she walked from land to land, taking it all in.
We walked through Tomorrowland, and there was a dance party going on the main stage. That seemed to be the vague thing she’d been looking for, so she pulled me, and all of us, in that direction. Hooray! We were going to start our night off by dancing. What a great start!
And then she promptly got freaked out by the lights swirling around on the ground, and demanded to be held.
Go figure. It was fun while it lasted.
If you’re wondering if she was willing to walk around at all for the rest of the night, I’ll give you a spoiler: Not really. But we still had a lovely time!
We did spend some time at the dance, just with me holding April. It was a lot of fun and a good way to get pumped up for the rest of the night.
After that we saw a lot of people lined up, so naturally we had to find out what they were in line for. We were hoping it was candy, but it turned out to be free snacks and soda. I grabbed a Diet Coke to help me get through the night, and we also grabbed some popcorn and water bottles. But this was a Halloween party, right? It was time to get some candy!
Our first stop was the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, where they had a similar setup to the setup from
MNSSHP. The Monsters were on screen and interacting with guests, but there were no set showtimes; you could just go in and out as you pleased and there was candy before and after the auditorium. We had a lot to accomplish in just a couple of hours so we chose not to sit around and just went through for candy, but as I walked past the screen, Buddy Boyle recognized my costume! He called me a Sully impersonator though. My dad trailed behind me with April, and I don’t think Buddy realized we were together because he encouraged me to look at Boo.
We left Tomorrowland and went back to the hub. The Mickey and Minnie cavalcade was about to start so we waited a few minutes for that to come by. April loves Mickey and Minnie so this was very exciting for her.
Next we went through the castle into Fantasyland to seek out more candy and things to do. My Dad saw the carousel and was immediately struck by this urge to take April on it, and asked if we could. DS decided to sit it out but it was a walk on so I said sure.
When we got onto the carousel, though, April started to freak out. I’d taken her on a carousel before, but it was the smaller one at Disney Springs which I guess was less intimidating. We tried to get her on a horse but she wasn’t having it. I could tell Dad was disappointed but I insisted we get off the ride so we wouldn’t delay it any further. I do think she’s a bit young for such a large carousel, especially since I can’t be on the horse with her.
We brushed off that stressful event and went to Pinocchio’s Village Haus for some more candy. I think Gideon and Honest John were on the balcony as we walked in. It was a quick line, but when we exited the building, we got separated for some reason. Maybe Dad and DS had to go to the bathroom? Or maybe DS got lost and Dad went to find her. Either way I sat on a bench at the building’s exit next to a sweet family with a little baby. April was very fascinated and was eager to tell them that I was her Mom, which I gotta tell you, didn’t suck too much! Lol
Once we were all reunited, we decided we wanted to go on a ride. Winnie the Pooh had a short wait so we got in the queue for that. I believe this was the first time since the pandemic that I saw the queue activities open again, so April got to play with those a bit before we got on our vehicle.
After a lovely jaunt through the Hundred Acre Wood, our bellies were rumbling for something sweet too, so we went to Pete’s Silly Sideshow for another candy stop!
By now, April had picked up on the fact that we were collecting candy, because we shouted, “Candy! Candy! Candy!” every time we saw a candy stop. So now she was shouting it too, and bouncing along in her carrier, which as you can imagine did wonders for my hips. After Pete’s, we got more candy at the nearby stop at Ariel’s grotto. April loves mermaids so I hope this meet and greet reopens soon!
I checked the time, and raced us back to the hub for the Maleficent cavalcade. I had been really eager to see this one, since I hadn’t seen Maleficent or any of the other Festival of Fantasy floats since before the pandemic. We got there just in time to see her rounding the corner and got to see some great fire breaths as well. This float is just amazing! If you’ve never seen it in person, it’s really emblematic of the magic of Disney imagineering.
We went over to the Haunted Mansion at this point because it’s just not a Halloween party if you don’t go on the Haunted Mansion? The line was pretty long so we asked about a return time and were able to get one for I think about forty minutes from that point.
While we waited, we might as well get more candy! We headed over to another stop in Frontierland. I believe it was near Splash Mountain? I know we definitely went over the bridge because when we were on our way back across it, DS’s
scooter died again. But this time, Dad knew how to switch out the battery, so he did that while we watched the villains cavalcade go by.
That was the last cavalcade I’d really wanted to see (I’m not super into NBC so didn’t care about seeing that one), so we made our way over towards the Haunted Mansion. Along the way, we spied Chip and Dale up on a balcony.
I love their outfits! Chip and Dale are probably my favorite characters to meet. I can’t wait until I can hug them again.
We went back to the FP (or LL I guess) entrance for Haunted Mansion to ride and as we were waiting to talk with the CM, a lady asked him if she could get a return time, and he told her they’d finished giving them out for the evening, I think because the wait time now exceeded the remainder of the party time. She walked away, and I mentioned something along the lines of, “It’s a good thing we got one when we did!”
And the cast member turned to me and said, in what I can only assume was complete sincerity, “Wow, that was a really savage thing to say.”
It did sound really judgy from where I was standing, but at this point we were all tired and I think I just said something about not meaning it to be savage, and we all awkwardly tapped in and went into the queue, while I tried to figure out if I’d really said anything rude. Maybe something ultra-white person, but not necessarily rude, maybe? I sure hope not.
As we passed the main facade, there was a butler character talking to guests who walked by. Honestly, I could hang out all night by the HM characters. They’re so funny! It's impossible to get good pictures of them though, which only convinces me that they really must be ghosts!
The last couple of times I was on the HM with April, she acted a little spooked at some parts, so I wasn’t sure how she would do tonight, but she did fine, thankfully, so I didn’t have to feel like a bad mother on top of feeling like a rude person.
We saw the other character as we left the mansion, I wanna say she’s an opera singer? She was great.
We headed towards the park exit. The party was going to end soon and we’d done everything we set out to do. On the way, we had to take some pictures of our costumes for posterity. The Photopass lines were all really long, so we just took pictures of each other.
And yes I know it's weird that my dad and sister were Mike and Celia lol. DS just really wanted to be Celia and it felt weird to have Dad go as anyone other than Mike. But aren't those Celia ears great??? I thought they were well done for fanmade ears. She got them on Etsy.
Looking back, I’m a little bummed that we didn’t get an official picture with all of us, but we got a lot of compliments on our costumes and I’m glad we at least got these pics.
We left the park and boarded a Boardwalk bus stop. It was super late by the time we got back, and I have in my notes that April went to bed at 1, and I went to bed at 2.
So, would I recommend Boo Bash? That’s a tough question, made more difficult by the fact that as of this writing, it’s late November and there are no more Boo Bashes anyway. I know that the Christmas event is quite different so I don’t think you can compare one to the other, and I know that next year the Halloween event might be totally different. We could even get Mickey’s Not So Scary back! That would be awesome.
Overall, there’s a bit of irony in charging more for a shorter event with arguably less going on. I get that it’s an “After Hours” event and that means the number of guests is smaller, but honestly I would be willing to pay the same amount for a MNSSHP that had less people than the one I had in 2019, which was insanely crowded and one of the reasons my dad was hesitant to do this one until I told him it was lower capacity.
So the lower crowds is really the only thing that gave the party an added value. Other than that, there was nothing standout-ish compared to what you’d get at a standard party, and of course there was even less than normal. No fireworks, no real parades, no castle show, no getting to hug characters. It also felt like some of the little touches that made the party extra special to me were gone, like the classic creepy Mickey cartoons playing in the Philharmagic auditorium (although that might have been because the show was being refurbished, to be fair). Overall, besides the crowds and some free non-Halloween related treats, there was nothing included that was more than what you were getting at an earlier year’s party. So I can’t say that if it happened again next year, I would do it again. But I’m glad we tried it and got to do some Disney Halloween stuff. I also think one of the downsides is it’s harder for families with little kids to do, because it starts later so you can’t go early, hit the stuff you want, and then leave so your kids can sleep at a semi-reasonable time. Even my night owl girl was put to bed much, much later than normal.
I’ve never done a Christmas event before, but if you’ve done both events this year, let me know how they compare! I’m very curious.
Next up, a much-deserved rest day. Sort of.
